What Not To Say During Suboxone Appt (Page 5)

Updated

My boyfriend has battled with heroin addiction for at least 2 years now. He was prescribed to before, but couldn't afford the maintenance program and ended up banging heroin again. He went back to his doctor to get a script for suboxone again last week, and the doctor wouldn't prescribe it to him. I found another dr who can prescribe suboxone nearby, and want to make sure he gets a script because he will die if he doesn't quit using. Does anyone know any reasons why a dr wouldn't prescribe suboxone?
Thanks.

Only a licensed therapist can prescribe subs. I was taking 4 to 6 norco a day from my Dr, so when I got dope sick my first time I went to the er because I didn't know what was happening to me. They just shot me up with daludin and gave me a Rx for more norco???? You have to go to a methadone/sub Dr.

Hi Dani (and anyone else), The threads don't flow in a way that I am following well, but I will do my best. I am a medical doctor who is Board Certified in Addiction Medicine and also have a special license to prescribe buprenorphine. Only doctors are legally allowed to prescribe any compound containing buprenorphine (the active ingredient in Suboxone and Subutex, and they just released a new form called Zubsolv). The reason that a doctor will not prescribe Subutex, is because the FDA and DEA limit doctors to prescribing one of the types of burprenorphine that also contain Naloxone. Suboxone and Zubsolv contain this Naloxone (as well as the active ingredient buprenorphine). When buprenorphine is by itself, it is also called Subutex. The DEA and FDA do allow for doctors to prescribe Subutex/just buprenorphine in VERY SPECIAL circumstances only.
Dani, if you have any special questions I will do my best to answer. (Please note that the comments and information contained within my posts do not imply direct medical advice nor is it an attempt to establish a doctor-to-patient relationship.)

I am not Dana, but would like to reply. I have a question for a doctor (understanding that this is not patient/doctor relation and that you hold no liability to the answer). The maximum dosage for Suboxone is 32mg per day - why are doctors now only prescribing 24 mg as maximum and most recent are trying to aim more toward 12 mg per day ? What has changed so drastically ?

Hi Tyler,

Not all suboxone doctors are mean and bad. The first sub doctor I went to was very knowledgeable about subs and was also a nice guy. He was full (they can only take so many patients beacuse of DEA rule) the second time I decided to go on subs again so I went to a different sub dr. He was an ok guy but didn,t seem to know much about subs.

Theres good and bad sub doctors just like doctors in other fields.

Hey Middle aged,

I,m not a doctor. Maybe suboxone drs. are starting to smarten up. Maybe there starting to realize that in most cases they don,t need to prescribe such high doses. Suboxone is incredibly strong. This is just my opinion.

Jolter is right.. Suboxone is an EXTREMELY powerful medicine, one that lasts for days in the body without wearing completely off.. It does lose some potency as time goes by, but if you took Suboxone today, you'd still have trace amounts in your bloodstream in 4-5 days, depending on how many milligrams of it you take. A full ceiling level, 24mg to 32mg would take over a week..because of the "half-life" that Suboxone has. There's a common 37.5 hour half-life to Suboxone, depending on various factors, some may break it down quicker, and some may take longer. But the average is 37.5 hours. So, 24mg at 8am today...37.5 hours from now, you'd have 12mg. 37.5 from that, 6mg. 37.5 hrs from that, 3mg. 37.5hrs from that, 1.5mg...and so on.
It takes a while to get it completely gone, which in-turn helps with not having such severe withdrawals from Suboxone. People "say" withdrawals from Suboxone are just the most awful thing EVER n EVER....but they are badly mistaken, or they never had a really strong addiction to short-acting opiates to begin with. Considering the half life of Suboxone, you are not left with just NONE in your system until about 2 weeks after your last dose, if it was a full 20+mg of it. So, the withdrawal symptoms are actually quite mild. The problem is, once you take Suboxone, you feel mostly normal...and you easily forget how bad withdrawals from short-acting opiates really was...like norco or percocet. So, taking Suboxone for 6 months...you've been away from the "street" drugs for quite a while, plenty of time for you to forget how intense and serious the withdrawals are...and Suboxone has been a "cushion" for you...so, when some of these people say "OMG Suboxone is the worst ever, I never should've got on it...OMG OMG"....they are naive enough to believe that Suboxone is the reason for their problems.
My biggest gripe with that is that people are blaming Suboxone...like Suboxone is the entire reason they are in this boat to begin with....don't mention the YEARS you spent eating norcos, lortabs, percocets, and oxycontin...or even HEROIN...only talk about how bad Suboxone is in the past 3 months.
People really should stand back and look at the life they were leading before Suboxone, and be thankful that such a drug exists.
Hopefully doctors are starting to come around to what Suboxone can do, and how much of a tool it can be. It's not meant to be solely used as a band-aid or suddenly heal someone from addiction. Everything about the lifestyle has to be different, or it's just wasting time (and money).

Look lady, don't listen to these whining saps. Seriously? "I'm on H now for blah blah blah.... Listen, if your guy WANTS to quit using he needs to bite the bullet and check into LONG TERM inpatient treatment. It's the only option. Otherwise, he'll take suboxone for a few weeks and his addict inside his head will convince him to go get high again. How many times has he f***ed your finances and life up because of this crap? Seriously, tell your old man to go to treatment or go to hell.

It took me a long time to realize that less is best. I was so used to being out of pills every month. Trying to plan on how I would have enough or where I could find/get more vics/percs/morhine - it didn't matter as long as it was an opiate. Now on Suboxone 3 months - my life has changed 100% I am serious. I have $1000 a month that I didn't have before. I am not worried that I won't have enough until next doctors visit. Well worth it. I am ready to move on now. It took me the longest to admit I even had a problem because I do have actual multiple surgeries pain - chronic pain. The suboxone doesn't take care of all the pain, but I am willing to deal with a little pain and there are some other types pain meds that will help with pain that you can take while on suboxone. Good luck to all and feel free to ask me questions - I will respond.

Hello again. Thank you to everyone that replied for the kind and encouraging words. Thank God CPS decided to close their investigation and did not take my daughter away but they did tell me I need to take parenting classes and a substance abuse class. And my first appointment with them is on Wednesday. But I'm actually kind of excited about going. I do want to get help and I also feel like going to these classes will show everyone that I want to make a change and better myself. I'm ashamed to admit that I am still using. I don't remember if I mentioned it before but I applied for Medicaid to see the sub doctor and get a script but they were backed up and weren't going to take any new patients for several months. And before that time came around, I lost my insurance because I didn't file for child support. I'm going to reapply and file this time if I even get approved. I'm so tired of this addiction ruling my life but it's freaking impossible for me to quit cold turkey! Anyways, I don't have much to say that I haven't already said so I'll write again to let anyone who's interested know what happens. Again, thank y'all so much for the prayers and encouragement! It truly means a lot to me. And to those of you going though similar situations or struggling with your own addiction, please don't give up! Or for those who have a loved one struggling with addiction, don't give up on them! Cause it's so hard to get through this and even harder to get through it on your own! Again, I really appreciate the prayers and I will also pray for all of you! Goodnight..

Amen. Anyone spending 12 hours a day reading about finding opiates and flying 1000 miles a month for an opioid scrip is FAR too much of an addict to be giving anyone here advice.

Because this country would rather see people stay messed up instead of getting better I'm on suboxin and its cost me 2500.00 dollars for the last 6months I owe everybody and can't afford no more so it looks like I'm going to have to do the same its the doctos and the suboxin clinics and the FDA what you need to do is go to the er every day and maybe they will learn not to take advantage of people who are trying to get help if you got Coventry cares they are a crooked company and need to be put out of business anyway job

DJF:
you're blaming everyone else for your addiction. this country didn't force you to take anything, nobody held a gun to your head and forced Suboxone in your mouth. so stop with that blame bs, accept responsibility for what you did on your own. apparently you decided to get hooked on something, and now you seem to think that you don't need to accept any of the consequences from that. no sympathy here, you made your bed and now you gotta lie in it. don't expect anyone to play your game unless they are in denial too, most of us are willing to man up and be responsible for what choices we made.

DJF:
And yeah...tell people to run to ER every day...we don't have enough health care expenses from people running to ER and not paying the bill...People like you really burn my pizz...you think we all owe you something because YOU went and got yourself hooked on drugs, now everyone should take care of you because of that. Once a moron, always a moron, I guess...but I don't owe you nothing, and my taxes don't need to pay for you running to ER every day just because you feel bad. You can't afford the meds, then do what you should've done already...deal with it and lead a normal life without drugs. If you can't afford to drive a BMW, then you drive what you can afford. If you can't afford to wear designer clothes, then you wear Sam's choice or thrift store special...why you think something YOU did to yourself and caused addiction is any different...well that's beyond me. The sense of entitlement you have is beyond unrealistic, it's just downright absurd. You are entitled to only have what you can get for yourself in this world, nobody owes you anything, so stop feeling like you are such a high & mighty person that everyone should foot the bill for you to be comfortably numb throughout life.
