Metronidazole Lasting Side Effects (Page 7)

Updated

I have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...

I just took Metronidazole last weekend for three days. I ended up in the ER as I was sure I was dying! Now I have been off for three days and am experiencing extreme sensory peripheral neuropathy, headaches at base of skull, foggy brain, and anxiety and panic attacks to the level of suicide thinking! I have never in my life felt anything like this before. It seems to get worse on a daily bases. I am looking for hope that these feelings will end.

Hi, I am so sorry to hear that you are experiencing all of this. I took Metronidazole at the end of last June for 4 days. I had the same symptoms you describe. For me it slowly got better about after 3 months. I still have some symptoms of PN mostly the nerves in my lower back. I spent a lot of money on light lazor treatments done at a Chiropracter's office. I had 18 treatments in all. I couldn't afford anymore. I do believe they helped. If I were you since you are early in this ordeal I would go to see a good Naturopathic Dr. I didn't but wish I had. You should be taking something to detox your body from this poison/med. I forget the name but it was like some kind of clay a person could take to pull the toxins out of the body. Hang in there and don't give up. Doctors will try to tell you that it is out of your system by now but I don't believe that is true. It is incredibly scary, I can still remember it so well. The nerve damage (PN) will not get worse because you are no longer taking the medication. This is what I've been told by a neurologist. I wish I would have known this earlier. I was so afraid when I read up on PN and how progressive it was. I couldn't even wear shoes but now I can and the weird crawly feeling in my legs is mild and not frequent compared to what it was like before. I hope this gives you hope. In my opinion this poison shouldn't be prescribed to anyone.

Hi how are you. I am also going through the same side affects. It's been one day since I stop using the pills. My eyes are very sensitive to the light and sun. I feel Tingly feelings in my body. I feel really weak. When I walk I feel light headed. I have to hold on to things to make sure I don't fall

Hi Pete, I had to hold onto things also. It also felt at times like I was walking sideways and I sometimes fell into things. I dropped things easily. I remember having a hard time to fold a towel, bringing both corners together. The tingling sounds like nerves in your body were affected. They say that only long term use can give you Peripheral Neuropathy. Right! Please keep me posted on how you are doing.

It's been almost two weeks since I stopped taking metronidazole. The PN seems just as strong if not worse. I am having the worst issues with burning mouth, esophagus, and tingling lips. Whenever I drink something it feels like liquid fire! I also have had reoccurring diarrhea (strangely after a hot flash) every day. I had a very scary on moment two nights ago where I felt I was crawling out if my skin and nearly went crazy from panic attacks afterwards. I read about B12 and found in 30 min my crawling sensations got slightly less. I have a 2 year old and a 3 month old baby I am nursing, so this has been beyond devastating. I feel like it has caused severe panic and I can't take care of my babies properly. I'm going to try milk thistle and see if it can help with my liver. I'm wondering if the antibiotic killed good bacteria in my intestines so I have the diarrhea and won't adsorb the B12 and other nutrients I need for healing? I can't take crazy vitamin doses or drugs because I am nursing.

Nybabymama, I felt all of the things you are speaking of and more. The PN was worse at night when I was lying in bed. I had episodes of tingling in my lips and face as well. Even part of my head would tingle sometimes. My heart goes out to you for it must be very difficult to keep care of your little ones. My grandson who I am bringing up was 10 and had to go to relatives for about a month or so. I still suggest you go to a naturopathic dr. who knows something about this. There are other things I took but you would need to consult one to see about nursing. What does your family dr. say about all of this happening to you? There should be a joint lawsuit put out against these pharmaceutical companies making this med. Please keep in touch. As I said before although I wouldn't say I am the same as before I took the med, I am much better. I'd say about 80% most days. :) I was very anxious and frightened too.

I have just taken Metronidazole 1200mg pd for the past 3 days, along with erythromycin, prescribed for a dental abcess that was causing extreme pain. Right now I am keeping myself awake so I don't go to sleep, even though its the middle of the night. When I start to fall asleep I feel as if I am stopping breathing and have weird and scarey images and thoughts. For most of today I have felt I was going to throw up. Yesterday I had sudden diarrhoea. Lots of hot flushes and itchy skin oh and bloating. My lip has started to tingle and be painful and I've had a tiny bit of tingling in my hands. My legs have felt really heavy and solid. I'm def stopping this drug now and I can't thank you enough for sharing all of our awful experiences to raise awareness. First thing in the morning I'm going to get some charcoal. :-(

Hi, I'm so glad you are listening to your body's warnings. I wish I would have known about charcoal. If you would be so kind to keep me posted on here, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you for your appreciation of my sharing my experiences to help others. Brings a little light to this horrible experience I've suffered. Praying for you.

Update 6 weeks post stopping Flagyl: My neuropathy continues to get better, as has my anxiety. It's not gone, but much better. But as my anxiety has cleared, it had revealed that the other strong and powerful symptoms don't seem to lessen up. I'm dizzy every day. I mean every single day. It's bad enough where i am not comfortable to drive. I also have excruciatingly painful head and neck pressure. I rarely get relief from these two symptoms. I tried a chiopracter 5 days ago and came out with 4 days of the worst migraine of my life. I think she aggravated the nerve damage that was already done. If anybody else can comment on head pressure or dizziness, I would appreciate info. When will this nightmare end???

I forgot to add that I started having ringing in the ears! Plus I am almost always "stuffed-up." And another symptom: I've had diarrhea every single day since I started taking flagyl -6 weeks and counting. I'm a thin woman and I've lost 30 lbs!

Took metronidazol and ofloxadin for 7 days for BV that didn't even come out in the swabs. 800 in the am and 800 in the pm. I started last monday and on saturday i have noticed my balance was off. I woke slightly from side to side, I've been having migraine and slightly blurry vision, got worse today ( day 4 since I stopped medication). I try to eat very healthy and not to worry but those symptoms got me convinced that I have ms and will never get better. HELP!

Kate, It will get better in time. It took me over 2 months for the dizziness and imbalance to completely go. I suggest you try to get charcoal to take the toxins from these medications out of your body. I didn't know about this and didn't do this. I wish I had, I probably would have recovered sooner and maybe I wouldn't be dealing with PN nerve damage from taking this poison they call medication.

update: 7.5 weeks since stopping flagyl and the PN has come back with a vengeance. I'm not sure i it is because I am run down (have a cold) or I had a scare with the baby last week. But I'm terrified this nightmare will never end! It is as bad as it was the first week!!

Feeling really rough two weeks since stopping antibiotic. Went to see my gp who after doing a few test diagnosed me with benign vertigo, he said it should go away in a couple of weeks. He also refused to believe that its an antibioticside effect. Just last week I ended up in an emergency room as I was convinced I was having optic neurotis attack ( wrongly, my eyes seem fine) but the headaches don't go away. Also wrists and legs pain below the knee making it difficult to walk. Oh and I overslept for work - I start at 1 in the afternoon !

Sorry to hear that your symptoms of PN have come back so strong. It will be a year at the beginning of July since I stopped taking flagyl and I still have the awful sensations in my legs and some in my arms. They do come and go. My feet do burn a lot but not to the degree they once did. I know that sugar is suppose to make it worse. Being run down with a cold could be why it's come back as well. I wish I would have never taken it!! We should be able to sue the Pharmaceutical Company. Today I started to take the supplements which are suppose to help repair the nerves. They are R-Lipoic Acid and Benfotiamine. I hope they help get this under control. I can't stand the horrible feelings in my legs and don't even want to think about them coming back to where they were. My heart goes out to you, nybabymama. It sounds like you are going through the exact same things I did and to a degree still am.

Kate, doctors either don't know or don't want to admit that your vertigo symptoms are from an antibiotic. If it happened to them they would think differently. I believe it will go away, for me it did. I was so afraid that it wouldn't. Your headaches should also subside. Hang in there. Give yourself some TLC.

Whatnow, how long was your PN unbearable? Mine feels unbearable today almost two months later. It's all over my face, neck, up my nose, in my ears, mouth, throat, esophagus, chest, arms, hands, feet. I also have this bizarre and tremendous head pressure/ache thats super scary in my head and neck. It's so bad today and I have two babies I can't take care of! I'm borderline hysterical trying to deal with this today. I've had a CT scan and MRI of the head and tons of blood tests with no results. I've never been so scared in my life.
