Metronidazole Lasting Side Effects (Page 6)

Updated

I have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...

Correction to my previous post:

The doctor explained to me that vision works as follows: the inner ear sends information to the brain stem, which in turn sends that information to your EYES.

Sorry - didn't want to confuse anyone!

The fact that he's feeling better after 3 days is a very good sign. I was still getting worse - much worse - at that time. I'm sorry to report that I'm still very sick at about 8 months after ceasing to take the medication. I wish your husband well.

I know this is old, but the Cipro is what is making you ill. Look up all the people killed or ill from this medication.

Mel,

After doing a lot of research about cipro (and all the quin drugs), I am coming to the same conclusion. Did you have a similar or damaging experience with cipro? I found out today that I will be seeing a neuro-otologist at the Cleveland Clinic in February. I am hoping for some answers there.

Thanks for sharing your input about cipro.

Hi Happy New Year to all.Just a brief update my son stopped taking this medication on 6-18-2012 i still feel he is suffering side effects from it.Every 7/10 days he is being sick and bringing up acid from his stomach it is not as severe as it was and the illness doesnt last as long but he never suffered with it before he took the drug.Do others feel they still have side effects several months after stopping taking the drug?

I took my first pills in May 2012, and I am still suffering. None of my symptoms have improved or subsided. I do believe, however, that the majority of the damage was caused by the cipro after conducing extensive research on my own. Sorry I can't be more encouraging... I do believe recovery from either med can take months-years.

Flagyl has given me the same symptoms I've seen blackboxed on Quinolone drugs! The last day I took it, I started having the metallic taste...and it was so bad that I was unable to exercise...it felt like metallic heartburn, which I'd never experienced before. I generally felt ill but nothing like vomiting--just a headache unable to be assuaged by ibuprofen.

A week later my right wrist was sore to bend. Then the pain spread to my thumb and forefinger. Then I experience joint pain in my right ankle, then left ankle, then left wrist and thumb...all the joint pain radiated toward my knees and elbows. Eventually the pain went up to my shoulder joints...I could barely get out of bed without help. My brain was screaming things like "Lupus" and "MS" and "Lyme disease"! My husband had to dress me. I tried several homeopathic remedies..because I was never taking another allopathic medicine again (in my resolution)!

I was crippled, contemplating buying bath chairs and motorized wheelchairs...lamenting my now useless masters degree since I would be unable to move let alone work. I pitied my husband who was going to be my nursemaid now....all at the tender age of 28 (both of us). I was lamenting my piteous state, remembering how only a week or two before I ran my first 4 miles in 41 minutes. I had been healthy and happy! I was now miserable to say the least!

I was crying and praying and thinking about euthanasia and which family member would make the decision to have me put to sleep. It was that painful, even with ibuprofen in my system.

I suddenly remembered I had pain pills from a surgery 6 years prior. I searched for them and found I had 4 or 5 left over. I thought it couldn't get any worse than what I was currently experiencing. So, I took one. Within 20 minutes I felt pain relief when I laid down on my bed. I took a nap because my right ankle sopped swelling when I was in a horizontal position. When I awoke I had little to no pain and was able to move a lot better than before. As I took the next pill, I could feel it was getting better. I couldn't believe it. I hadn't felt loopy from the pain pill like I remember feeling 6 years before but I figured it was on account of them being so old.

I googled the imprint on the pill bcz I wanted to know the wonderful pill that was saving me, even if only a temporary respite.

TURNS OUT...it was Keflex, a random antibiotic. As long as I took the Keflex (and a precautionary dose of Ibuprofen)...I was pain free. I could walk and smile and WORK. It was amazing. I could even dress myself and turn faucets!

I don't know why it works...my doctor doesn't know why it works....I think Flagyl must irritate or revive ( but not kill) a pre-existing bacteria that responds to Keflex's mechanisms...good news is...the generic Keflex (Cephalexin) is 4.00. I would gladly pay 4.00 forever if I knew I would live my life just as I had been before taking that stupid Flagyl!!!!!

If you're in doubt, I would at least give it a try. It's worked for me, by God's oh so precious mercy and grace. Maybe allopathic medicine isn't always so bad after all.

Hi, Sorry to hear that you have had such a rough from taking this drug. I don't understand how they can give such damaging drugs like this. I'm glad that Keflex helped you so much. Keep us posted on your progress. I'm a lot better, but it was only after going for lazer light therapy. Spent over $1800. on treatments but I was desparate. The symptoms of Peripheral Neuropathy are not nearly as bad. I hope and pray I keep improving. :)

I haven't posted for awhile and have improved quite a bit. I really do believe Activated Charcoal helped me a lot as all hospitals carry these for accidental poisoning. I also hit the sauna and sweated a lot of the metronidazole. This also helped when I breathed in
Roundup grass killer last summer, was incoherent.slurred speech. I am also checking into mercury poisoning as I have a fractured back tooth and amagam...mercury poisoning can cause a lot of bizarre symptoms in the body and cause mineral depletions such as selenium, zinc, magnesium, etc and severe reactions with some prescriptions.Gotta go.

I took metronidazole 500mg for four days. I didn't take any on day 5 because the side effects were getting unbearable and today is 7 and my side effect symptoms are still bad! I'm dizzy, confused, bad taste in my mouth (a very bitter taste), unbalanced, jittery and I just want this to go away!!!

Hi Jm123. I'm sorry to hear that you are having horrible experience. I took it for 4 days as well. I took 3 doses of 500mg per day. I had the symptoms which you describe and they lasted for me, about 3 months. Got continually better during the third month. However, for me the fourth day of taking the metronidazole my feet and hands started to tingle which meant nerve damage and I still have symptoms of peripheral neuropathy 7 months later. If you haven't experienced tingling or pain in your limbs this is very good. I believe the rest will go away in time. It was very scary for me as I know it must be for you. It's a horrible drug and if I would have known I would have never taken it. Keep me posted, please on your situation. Thanks.

Cheryl,

I am not a doctor, but I've been through 10 months of sheer hell after taking that medication cocktail. I'd advise you to demand to be put on other medication immediately and not to stop demanding until someone listens. If I could go back in time, I would have stopped taking the drugs the minute I had symptoms. I didn't listen to my body and instead listened to people tell me "I had to take them to get better." The "cure" turned out to be FAR worse than the symptoms I had.

Just last week, I was diagnosed with irreversible left inner ear damage at the Cleveland Clinic. Do not mess around with these drugs, especially cipro. It is extremely dangerous! I will now suffer from a lifetime of vestibular complications because of these drugs.

Cheryl,

I just wrote a response but the site has to review it before posting. I'm trying to write you now in attempts to warn you to listen to your body. Demand to be put on other medicines. You will read why when they finally post what I wrote. If it doesn't post, send in a request to get my private email address. I have valuable information to share with you. I'm making this response as generic as possible in hopes you'll get it quickly.

Erin

Hoping this posts -

I was just diagnosed last week with permanent, irreversible inner ear (left) damage at a top teaching hospital by a well-respected doctor. This is the result of taking these medications.

There are other medications that can treat these conditions. DEMAND them. I would like to go back in time and do the same.

Cheryl, please heed our warnings and stop them now. As, Erin, I too wish I could go back. Erin, has been through hell and her life has been negatively affected putting it mildly. I too have been through a lot and am still dealing with daily pain from this. Doctors don't care as much as you would think they do, either through ignorance or lack of empathy, I'm not sure. This isn't in your head, your body is yelling at you that this is poison to your system.
