Metronidazole Lasting Side Effects (Page 8)

Updated

I have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...

So I just received this antibiotic Wednesday of 500mg. It's 2 per day for 7 days. I'm having on and off migraines. I've been having a problem with inflammation in one eye and I'm afraid this medicine made it worse. The day after the first dose I noticed extreme swelling around my eye. The right side of my face feels numb. I only took 4 days worth think I'll stop there. Will this go away within the next few days? Is there something for me to take to flush out my system?

Flagyl is evil. I took two doses and had an allergic reaction. Hives and head/body aches and shooting pains. The shooting pains felt like lightening bolts shooting across every part of my head and body. Even my face. I took benedryl and the hives and body pains ceased. The headaches continued. Every day. Since August 2012. The first 6 weeks were debilitating. I don't remember how I made it through. Days are much better now in comparison but I still have debilitating ones. Even mild pain every day makes you want to scream sometimes. It's like someone jabbing you in the same spot in the arm over and over and over again. Drs. can't find anything wrong. Two MRIs and blood work are normal. Pain meds only muffle the pain. I'm scared as hell to try anything new.

I felt really ill after taking Metronidazole as per my previous post. I decided to take radical steps to improve my health. I would recommend Gut and Psychology Syndrome by Natasha Campbell McBride. Basically she reckons a lot of neuropsychological symptoms are caused by damage to the gut. To eradicate toxins and pathogenic bacteria she recommends a special diet and supplements to enable the gut to heal. I'm finding it really helpful. It's hard work and its not a vegetarian diet so I have had to put my principles aside briefly. But one of the main ways to damage the gut is to overwhelm it through antibiotics and poisons such as this drug. There's plenty of info on the Internet if you google. I think it has made a huge improvement to the awful side effects I was experiencing. Hope it helps somebody.

I found this page while looking for info on long term effects of metronidazole (also known as Flagyl).

I was prescribed this drug for a dental abcess that had gone undetected as there was a sound filling and no cracks in the tooth detected by x-ray and an apparently healthy gum line - so by the time the tooth was treated the infection was bad enough to warrant this drug. I only took it for 1.5 days - I think it was 500 mg 3x a day, along with erythromycin - but I had such severe nausea, dizziness, weakness, heart palpitations, sickening headache and an overall feeling of malaise and weakness so overwhelming I crawled instead of walked to the toilet on one occasion. I felt like I had been poisoned and at one point felt like I might die if I passed out.

I was dry retching but didn't vomit for the whole disorienting time I was on it (which was in late March - now 3 months ago) but I have had diarrhea off and on ever since - every 2nd day or so I will have intestinal cramps, sometimes nausea and very loose stools. I can feel okay-ish - lower than usual energy but generally fine - and then I'll have half a day where I feel like I'm coming down with food poisoning.

I did not drink any alcohol with this medication and don't drink very much or very frequently. I take probiotic capsules every day and make sure I drink quite a bit of water (with a bit of ginger root juice & lemon) and I have kept away from sugary, fatty foods since this reaction (not that I ate that much of them before) but in this state I could not face that kind of food.

At the moment I don't have a doctor in NZ and have not consulted one - and as I do seem to be slowly - very slowly - getting better I wasn't going to... but after reading this page I am wondering if I should have a few tests (like liver function etc).

There does not seem to be much info about this drug available...

I took this horrible antibiotic for a week, and am still feeling the side effects 10 days later. Nausea, fatigue, and pain in the right side of my abdomen, and generally feeling depressed and anxious. I will never, ever take it again. The manufacturers should be made aware of how it affects people days after finishing the course, and sometime weeks and months as I have read on here.

Hi DCLC, It's been now a year later and my symptoms were like yours and still are. I too go through weeks on end of overwhelmingly weird sensations in my legs and arms. I just want to cut them off. I don't know of any lawsuit. I went to a lawyer but she wouldn't take the case. Thinks my symptoms could be from fibro but I know the difference and I never had these symptoms until and during and after my treatment with flagyl. I feel hopeless and I don't like feeling this way. I want time to make things better but I'm not sure it will get any better than this.

I took Augmentin for 10 days for a persistent cought (Amoxicillin/Claulvanate) and am having all the same symptoms you all are describing, except for the Peripheral Nueropathy (horrific anxiety and panic attacks from hell, horrible depression, brain-fog, derealization/depersonalization, racing heartbeat, etc). Of course the doctors say my symptoms have nothing to do with the Antibiotic. I just finished 10 years of school (off and on) got a master's degree and have to start my new job the day after tomorrow!!! I am having the worse panic attacks you can imagine, and horrible depression. It feels like a cattle-prod or some sort of tazer has been attached to my spinal cord and is sending horrific electrical waves up my spine and throughout my body. When I drink something my esophagus burns. I smell a funny chemical smell when I breathe out. I took the Augmentin twice a day for 10 days from June 6th to June 16th of this year...it is now almost 2 months later and symptoms have not abated...maybe only by like 15% have they gotten better so far. This is one of the scariest and worst things that has ever happened to me. If anyone could offer me some hope that has been through this, it would be greatly appreciated! I just want to know that this will get 100% better and is nothing permanent! :(

Has the anxiety gone away yet? I am experiencing horrific panic attacks from an antibiotic that poisoned my system...it's been two months since cessation of the poison and the panic attacks have only gotten worse! Please tell me they went away completely? Not only that...I've experienced depression as well.

Hullo everyone experiencing horrible side effects from metronidazole -also known as Flagyl-

I felt quite ill for weeks after taking this drug. It actually clears your body quite quickly (so they tell me) but what it does is strip the friendly bacteria from your digestive system.

Contact your doctor (or a pharmacist if you can't get hold of your doctor) and describe in detail the symptoms and their severity. You may have an intolerance to this drug or you might just have bad side effects - but keep your doctor informed and get advice in the short term. In the long term, look for prebiotic and probiotic remedies to fix "leaky gut" and they can go quite a way to making you feel much better.

Google these remedies - they are over the counter at health food stores - here in New Zealand - though I was told about them by a doctor here: GastroVen, Digestease SP and Galactan. These probiotic, prebiotic and some stomach soothing fibre thing are very easy to take (2 capsules + flavourless powder that dissolves in a drink 2x a day) and I felt much, much better right away, though my doctor here who told me about this stuff has me on it for 3 months.

I hope you all feel better - recovery is possible!

cheers from New Zealand! Canadian in Auckland

Flagyl is awful, I have been taking it for 3 days....it has been a nightmare! I thought I was going insane. Needless to say I'm stopping this drug now. I have been having the worst panic attacks and my whole body feel like a brick. I eat extremely healthy and practice yoga regularly and had my anxiety under control. That all changed the day after my first dose of flagyl.
This drug is poison. Please tell every one you know never to take it. I am a sensitive person when it comes to drugs, but I've never experienced the feelings that flagyl induced in me. My mouth tingles, I'm having the worst panic attacks ever (I'm no stranger to panic attacks), my urine is brown, I even felt suicidal last night.
Sick sick sick! The pharmaceutical companies Oughta be sued for selling this vial substance.

I've gotten a bit better. I'm feeling leveled out. Meaning I can control my response to the panic attacks now. Your gut is your second brain so I'm guessing I'm just sensitive to my gut neurons. Antibiotics are notorious for stripping the gut of it's good bacteria too. I picked up some homeopathic anti anxiety meds and they seem to be doing the trick. I'm also taking red reishi to aid in the detox. Best of luck

Hi! Just wondering how you are going now? I took a ten day course of Augmentin as well and on the 7th day experienced an absolutely horrific panic attack! I called an ambulance. So embarrassing in hindsight. I didn't think it could be the meds for a second and so took the rest. Then I started getting panic attacks every day like 5 times a day. And not like anything I have ever experienced. Violent shaking, vomiting, fever, chills and heartbeat through the roof!!! I almost ran into traffic because I couldn't bear it! It has now been a month and the panic is only slightly better. I now suffer from intense waves of depression as well. My life has literally been put on hold. Not sure how long I can cope like this :( has it gotten any better for you?? At least we know we are not alone. That helps a little. I think we'll pull through. I hope you are doing okay. Please reply and if you want to chat I can give you my e-mail xx

Hey there,
I'm sorry you have had to ingest this horrific poison! It is absolutely horrible. Well, I took a 10-day course starting June 6th of this year, ending June 16th. I started having your exact symptoms on day 9 (minus the vomiting). It is now September 3rd (nearly 3 months since the last dose,) and I am about 60% better. I still get waves of depression and panic, but they are not NEARLY as bad as when this all first happened...and they are gradually and fading. I did a ton of research, and found that what we are actually experiencing is similar to mold toxicity (same exact symptoms) but it's biotoxin illness/chemical toxicity. My mom and I consult with a world-renowned nutritionist who helped me get off all psych meds years ago (I used to suffer from clinical depression and anxiety but was completely and totally 100% cured years ago with natural food-derived vitamins and supplements). Our nutritionist is a certified doctor of nutirtion and a genius. Anyway, he sent me a link to a famous natural doctor who pioneered in the area of mold detoxification. Did you know that 90% of antibiotics are made from mold?? And 1/3 of the population has a gene that cannot process mold...funny because it is MEDICALLY DOCUMENTED that 1/3 of the population has the potential to suffer from Central Nervous System toxicity (what you and I are experiencing) as a side effect of these HORRIFIC antibiotics. Strange coincidence, huh? The doctor who pioneered in mold detoxification uses a substance called cholestyramine to detoxify people that are highly toxified by mold, biotoxins, and other neurotoxic chemicals... It is a medication in powder form that is used to lower cholesterol...it is not absorbed so it is pretty benign. The side effect is that it detoxifies the liver of neurotoxins. Cholestyramine is also used to detoxify Vietnam vets of agent orange...a highly neurotoxic chemical. Neurotoxins (derived from chemical toxicity) are lipophilic, meaning they hide in our body fat...mainly our brain, which is mostly fat....which is why they are extremely hard to detox. When we eat, our gallbladder releases bile, which contains the neurotoxins. The neurotoxins travel to the small intenstine where they are reabsorbed and continue to toxify us. Our small intenstine has an affinity for neurotoxins. What the cholestyramine does is bind the bile so that none of the neurotoxins are reabsorbed...then you when you defecate you excrete them. Anyway, to make a long story short, I went to this clinic that specializes in mold detoxification here in my area. I started taking cholestyramine and whithin one week I jumped from being about 15% better to nearly 60% better...when before the cholestyramine I was barely better after a month and a half. I even started having some days where I was feeling 100% normal! Our nutritionist explained that this is a process and that detoxification takes awhile. Regular medical doctors will not believe you when you tell them that this poison caused these symptoms...Don't even try to explain it to them because you will be wasting your breath. Id love to connect with you and offer you support. You can email me at {edited for privacy}

Ahhhh thank you so much for replying! You have no idea how much knowing it's possible to get better helps. I actually could not cope like this if I didn't know I could recover. And thanks so much for all that detail, so informative! I have absolutely no history of mental illness. I can understand how the medical community finds this kind of reaction hard to believe. I was such a happy stable person and then overnight I was a shaking almost suichdal mess. I wouldn't believe it either except it happened. Would love to discuss this further! Unfortunately it censours your e-mail address on this site. Not sure how to get around that one...

Thanks dgirl for the important information you've shared! It's been over a year and I'm still experiencing nerve damage symptoms (PN). I have had periods where I think I'm getting back to my previous self and am encouraged but, when they come back it scares me and leaves me feeling overwhelmed. Can you please tell me the dosage you are taking of Cholestryramine? I ought to go to a Naturopathic doctor. I so agree with you in calling these types of antibiotics poisons. It was at the end of June last year when I started taking Metronidazole. I took it 4 out of the 7days prescribed. I wish I would have stopped them as soon as I became very dizzy and lightheaded. The very next dose made me feel such anxiety and depression, the one after that is when the rest of the symptoms kicked in such as tingling/heaviness/dropping things and vertigo. It was a nightmare!! You are also right about doctors either not acknowledging the severity of the side effects from this so called medicine.
