Metronidazole Lasting Side Effects (Page 5)

Updated

I have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...

I thought I'd like to join this forum/posting. I too have suffered on metrodazinole/flagyl made by Watson Drug Company. I've had stomach pain, gas, soft stools, etc since 2010 and the doctors have done colonoscopy, endoscopy , ultrasound, etc and still didn't find anything. So dummy me I asked the doctor if I could try an antibiotic to kill giardia in case they missed this in my stool test. I took 500 mg/ day the Metrodazinole from 9/15-9/19 for five days and had I no side effects (except for dark urine) and then the dizziness hit me on Tuesday night (5th day) when I was doing dishes and had to lie down....I've had anxiety and was restless that night and felt disassociated from the world...very scary feeling....then I had that all next day..dizziness. The second day off this horrible drug I felt better only at the end of the day and felt good the next day.... The following day I was dizzy (Sunday). I felt alittle better all week except the dizziness hit Friday night and thought I was having a mini stroke. Today I was dizzy but drove into the city( Houston, Tx) anyway. My speech was slurred Friday night but felt better later Today and was conversing with my wife over coffee this afternoon. The only thing that got me to sleep last night was to listen to a YouTube Hypnotist named Tellman....he put me to sleep in 10 minutes. The only time I felt something similar (but didn't last over a week) was when I used "ROUNDUP" to clear my ground for new grass....what helped some was getting into a sauna and trying to sweat the chemicals out of my brain and body. Sorry for being a windbag .....just wanted to give a brief history on my use of this awful medicine.

I'd like to add that I took metrodazinole 500 mg of metrodazinole 3 times a day, totaling 1,500 mg/day with no side effects until the fifth day when I started having problems.

Tex, Sorry to hear about your experience with this poison(drug). At the end of June, 2012, I took the same dose per day as you did, but I took it for 4 days and I'm still dealing with symptoms. I am spending loads trying to heal my body from peripheral neuropathy. A neurological diabilitating condition causing your nerve endings to die. I suffered from the dizziness, vertigo and imbalance too. All have gotten better. I still have the imbalance at times. The pain in my feet is scary and the crawling abnormal feelings in my arms and legs almost drive me wacky. :( I'm glad you found this place to talk about what has happened to you. I think you have a very good chance on getting better from your symptoms since you haven't described any nerve damage symptoms and my other symptoms such as you described are so much better. Only feel dizzy sometimes if I'm over tired but that is happening less. Hope this is encouraging to you.

Wow....thanks for replying so fast.....I think I had some type of ...ND when I took a statin drug for high cholesterol....when I got off this drug this went away in 10 days....Like I said in my post I hope I can join a health club and try a sauna to "sweat out" this nasty poison.....it worked on that nasty ROUNDUP chemical I was exposed to several summers ago....I'll keep you posted if I have time to join a health club and start doing this sauna treatment....working (and driving ) amounts to 12 hour days so I hope I can find time. It's encouraging that these nasty symptoms start going away with the next several weeks... I can only pray this happens soon.

Tex, I hope you begin feeling better soon. I have tons shared on my story in posts below. I was poisoned by this medicine in May, and I am still dizzy every single day and have trouble reading an watching television - anything that involves visual tracking. I've had every test under the sun and still no answers. Pharmacists assure me that the medicine is long out of my system, so I hope for you that given the timing of your dose and symptoms that you will heal sooner than later. It's a very scary and difficult time, and please know there are people here who understand. Please keep us updated on your progress.

If there is one consensus among us all on the board who have suffered from the dizziness, it's that it is worse with less sleep. My neuro says more sleep enables the brain to compensate better. I'm sorry to hear you had a bad day. Today was my birthday and I spent it going to work then therapy, which this horrible medicine has forced me to seek. I hope your day is better tomorrow. I've also been doing some reading on natural amino acids and herbs that could help. GABA and valerian root may help you.

We are on vacation and I am getting a ton of sleep and it does help, last few days I have not been having to fight to wake up and have had only a couple of dizzy spells.

Activated Charcoal capsules look very promising...I thought I would start taking these to detox my body from this toxic, nasty drug.

According to Dr. Al Sears, MD. he wrote an article that spoke of:
"Most poisons in your body are attracted to charcoal – even prescription drugs. Since your body reacts to most prescription drugs as toxins (that’s why there are so many side effects to meds), activated charcoal taken orally will often adsorb prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs, too. . The activated charcoal will fight the poisoning from a medication overdose. That’s why every emergency room carries it. It is also used in many different detox programs to help absorb the chronic accumulation of drugs in the body. And prescription drugs – which tend to be toxic – will be absorbed and removed by activated charcoal."

Very interesting. Do you think this would still help if the damage was long done (like for me - I took the med 6 months ago and am still sick)? If so, where would you obtain this? A health food store?

Thanks for sharing.

I purchased mine at the Vitamin Shoppe health food store VITAMIN SHOPPE brand Activated Charcoal
560mg....I took some pills last night and feel,a lot better already....I even broke open the capsules and put them in a bathtub to soak in... I read that this helps...any health food store should have them....I've read hospitals carry this for some poisoning in the body and detox programs use these for chronic accumulated drugs in the body....there are a lot of brand names for these pills....I've also been hitting the treadmill to sweat toxins out...no side effects yet from taking these last night....maybe you can read up more on these...no die off reactions so far from taking these pills....you can read up on this, talk to your doctor about these....I feel good so far.

The only reason I heard about activated charcoal at first was when I went to the Vitamin Shoppe and asked for Manuka Honey which is supposed to be good for cellulitis...strep/staph type skin infection my son got....the employee suggested he takes the activated charcoal to detox the insect poison....she laughed and said she got rid of a hangover in one half hour after taking these.

How is everyone feeling today?

I seem to be doing a little bit better with the lights when it's dark. Knock on wood... afraid to say I'm improving with this, because we all know we have tolerable and miserable days. I was really worried about being able to get to/from work when the season changed, so maybe that's at least something to cling to. For those who haven't read my previous posts, lights at night looked like exploding firecrackers to me.

Hi Erin,...Here in Canada it is Thankgiving today and I am thankful to hear that there is improvement in your night time vision. :-) I'm clinging to hope and although I go through daily struggles, I'm believing that things will soon get better. Any other way, I couldn't cope. Know that your post here mean something to me as well as others.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I had to have a Barium x-ray done on Friday (suspected Crohn's from the initial colitis attack last May when I was given these toxic drugs). Anyhoo, they asked me my drug allergies and I listed Cipro and Flagyl. Nurse asked me what happened when I take them, and I said brain damage. She looked at me like I had 3 heads. I preceded to explain the side effects, and while in disbelief, she did seem to buy my story. I've also told my pharmacy, just in case. It would be a good idea for everyone here to do the same, just in case you're incapacitated. I have a power of attorney, but I'm getting a living will done and will have these drugs included in there. If it comes down to those are the only drugs I can take, put me in the GROUND. LOL!

Erin....it's interesting that you talked about colitis/crohns..... that is why I took metronidazole/flagyl as I thought I may have giardia as I have had problems with my stomach for over three years-colonoscopy, endoscopy, etc and nothing found yet...I would like to reiterate that I have been feeling a lot better....I hope that the activated charcoal powder/pills have been detoxing me....here's a link healingtools.tripod.com/char1.html that I found interesting...the main thing I am impressed is that supposedly all hospitals use this to detox accidental poison-drugs, chemicals out of a body and it appears to be very safe to use. I'll try to keep you posted how I'm feeling.

Where do you get the activated charcoal? A health food store?

I found this today and was going to order these:
livestrong.com/article/414841-natural-herbs-for-brain-cell-repair-or-regeneration/

I had a severe attack of right-sided colitis. Blood tests were borderline positive for Crohn's, so now the doctor wants to do another colonoscopy (I had one done in June). An incompetent doctor didn't biopsy the right areas. I pretty much live from doctor's appointment to hospital visit these days :( Oh well, at least the colonoscopy isn't anywhere near as bad as dealing with this dizziness/ visual disturbances.

Sorry to get back with you until now....I have been feeling good this whole week...I had a hida scan as one of the tests to check for gallstones, etc....I may have problems with gluten as I ate a lot of bread after fasting for my hida scan all day and this triggered costrochronditis which I felt like a heart attack....but just severe inflammation in the chest area...the last time I had this flareup was when I had a lot of pasta...I'll just try to stay away from gluten for awhile ......anyway....not sure where you can buy activated charcoal pills....probably from a vitamin store...anyway since I feel good lately I stopped taking the activated charcoal pill....sure hope you get better soon.

I wanted to provide everyone with an update. Last week, I saw a neuro-opthamologist at Duke University. This is a neurologist who specializes in the eyes. He did a comprehensive work-up and testing on my eye function and came to the conclusion (as my local neurologist had) that my problems are arising out of damage to my inner ear. For those of you who don't remember, I suffer from constant dizziness and severe issues with visual tracking (reading, watching tv, following panoramic images, etc.) The doctor explained to me that vision works as follows: the inner ear sends information to the brain stem, which in turn sends that information to your inner ear.

We had gone back and forth trying to figure out if my problem was originating in the brain stem, the eyes, or the inner ear. I even saw an inner ear specialist locally who said my problem was not inner ear related. But in reading about vestibular disorders, I do believe that the doctor at Duke is very much correct in his diagnosis. Vestibular issues can cause the exact type of eye problems I have been experiencing going on 7 months now.

I have been referred to see a neuro-otologist at either Johns Hopkins or Cleveland Clinic. I will go to whoever I can get in with first.

As I know has been the case with many of you all here, my life continue to be a living hell from day to day. I am not improving and do not seem to be compensating in any meaningful way for the loss, as I have read can occur when there is damage to the vestibular system.

As a validation, I will tell you that the Duke doctor said that while Flagyl and Cipro are not the *top* causes of antibiotic-induced vestibular damage, that he did agree they had caused my problem. My reading confirms what he said. Gentamycin, for example, is almost always ototoxic, resulting not only in balance problems but often permanent hearing loss.

If any of you have any positive healing stories, I would appreciate hearing from everyone here. I pray that you have all fared better in your recoveries than I have. I feel better at least having a diagnosis that I feel I can rely confidently on, but tremendously discouraged and hopeless that I can ever heal from this. BTW - there is no magic cure for ototoxicity. You either get better or you don't.
