Multaq Anyone Else Take It (Page 14)

Updated

Okay I will start off by saying this drug scares me because it has not been out for very long. I have Afrial Fib which is not behaving I can be 70 beats one min and regular and the next I will be at 190 and in atrial fib and flutter. this is my last chance at a med I have tried all the others I usually end up in the ER two or three times a week. I have had one ablation so far. If anyone else takes it please let me know what it is like. I am starting it on Tuesday.

Tutsi, the mini maze was done in Evansville, IN Dr. Cefali, with the Heart Group. This was done in 2009. Also, those on Multaq, the Cleveland Clinic doctor that told us it didn't work also said it causes diarrhea. I don't have atrial fib any more, but still have pvc's. I have a healthy heart,, except for pvc's . If they start to weaken the heart I will probably need an ablation on the lower part of the heart...this doesn't come without risks. I am thankful that the atrial fib hasn't been a problem for over a year. I had it for 13 years. Everyone is different how their arrhythmia works. Hope this helps.

Thanks Ralph it does help. What I have been told by doctors is that those PVC's will eventually go away. Hope that is the case for you. I wish you lots of luck without the A-Fib.

Olen suomalainen ja asun Vantaalla. Nyt olen kayttanyt Multaq laaketta noin yhden viikon. Minulla haittavaikutukset ovat sangen vahaisia. Ehka pahin on matala leposyke, tallä hetkella se on 46. Aballaatiota ei minulle Suomessa tehda, koska olen 69 vuotias. Suomessa ei Aballaatioita tehdä yli 60-vuotiaille. Jos haluat, kirjoittelen lisaa kayttokokemuksista suomen kielella. Kaytan tekstissa a ja o, ei ö ja ä. Kuulen mielellani myos sinun kommentit.

So I thought I would get a second opinion on what could be done with my AFib condition. I went to my regular cardiologist and he got mad and said he would no longer be my doctor. He told my wife and I to go start at the beginning and flounder are trying to figure it out by yourself. I thought it was smart to get different approaches to medical treatment...did I miss something here?

Hi Coach,
You did nothing wrong in seeking a second opinion - any doctor or "ologist" who does not like it they do not deserve to be your doctor - get another one - call the state dept. to find out how good such and such a doctor is, if they have anything pending against them - say adios to this doc - it's your heart and you have the right and responsibility to get as many opinions on it as you like. I am one for 2nd, 3rd and maybe even 4th opinion - it's my A-fib - and as far as meds for me for now no antiarryhthmic drugs for me - like Multaq etc etc. Good luck to you - I kind of like teaching hospitals they have lots of cardiologists as well as interns and when all of those brains are put together they have bunch of opinions. Many people do not like teaching hospitals.

Hi CSmith
I had electrical cardio version about a month ago and it did not work after being on Multaq for one week - now I have after effects from that drug something awful.
I am not a doctor so I cannot tell exatly what ablation is although I know there are several types plus mini-maze.
Please go to google and type "the treatment of atrial fibrillation" then click - it's about the 5th item on the page click on that and it should read "University of Michigan Electrophysiology Service" - "dated July 2009" it is an excellent article and it will give you all the info that us laypeople understand and then you can bring the article to your doctor and ask how each different procedure works and which might be the one for you. Hope this is of help.

Hi Jeanne,
I have been off Multaq since 12/28/10 and was on it only a week for the purpose of electrical cardio version which did not work. -
So, it's been now about a month I have been off of Multaq - the side effects are still with me, feet and ankles are swollen even though I am on 60mg of furosemide (lasix) systolic pressure is giving me trouble it shoots up just like that from the slightest movement, diastolic pressure seems to be OK most of the time - my B/P medicine was increased to 50 mg, losartan (cozaar) - my breathing is getting better and pulse is getting better also.
This drug collects in your liver and gets out of your system by "lifetimes" - can't understand it and can 't explain it to you. The first half lifetime takes about 19hrs to get out of ones system.
I was told that I am free of Multaq???!!!
Hope this answers your question.

For tutsi< Thank you for your input. I have been on Multaq for 4 months. My side effects are tiredness and sometimes I feel sensations in my hands an feet, my a fib episodes are few and far between and bp is being managed. Wish I could come off this drug but my dr said I may not be able to tolerate other medication that is used to control afib. Have also had bouts of anxiety.
Not sure it is the Multaq or extra stress I am under at this time.

i have been taking multaq for 8 weeks. I have gone into afib and decided to take 500 mg of magnesium oxide . well I'm in normal sinus rythm since I started this . dosage . spoke to my doctors chief assistant and I detected they were upset. maybe because this decision effects doctors bottom line.I experience some flutter toward the end of the day so I'm thinging of taking 250 mg at around 6 pm .Have you tried this. ps most important when getting a blood test request the following an enzyme test for the multaq interaction with the liver and a magnesium test to insure proper levels of magnesium

Hi Jeanne, I am glad the Multaq is working for you. Hope you have your doctor testing the liver enzymes as the article on internet of 1/14/11 by Matthew Perrone, AP, wrote Multaq "could cause liver damage". If you like to read the article - please google it and enter "this drug could cause liver damage" and it should be the first article there and then click on it I wish you luck with this drug - I am done with it.

This is for Joe. You probably should have discussed it with your doctors first because Multaq interfers with statins, some other beta-calcium blockers, digoxin so maybe there are vitamins it interferes with also. My APRN checked all vitamins (and I am on whole bunch of them have been for the past 25-30 yrs) and drugs that I was on and all vitamins were OK - except a couple of drugs I had to quit for that one week period.
I am taking calc/mag/zinc the CVS brand 4 ea a day.
Please ck my reply to Jeanne of today for the article I am talking about - liver enzymes should be checked while on Multaq. Good luck to you too.

Hi Tutsi - I did read the article about liver damage from taking Multaq. I do have my liver enzymes checked every month, as I also have a very low blood platelet count and have to be checked routinely. As I said before, wish I could come off this drug, but as long as I am staying out of Afib, I will use it even though I have reservations about taking it. Will check back periodically, good luck to you and everyone else with this condition. Keeping you all in prayer.

csmith,
Multaq is not a vitamin it is a drug or medicine - it's one step down from amiodarone, which is an excellent antiarryhthmic drug but extremely toxic (that is what I was told by doctors as well as pharmacists) - I do not know which pharmacy would tell you something so erroneous. I can imagine them filling out people's prescriptions??!!
You say you have no side effects except a bit dizzy and shaky well those are side effects and I certainly would discuss them over with my doctor especially if they continue.

Thanks Jeanne. We all need prayers.
I am glad that you are on the ball so to say and the enzymes are being checked.
Please let us know how things are going and good luck to you again.
I just sent a mess. to csmith twice as I wanted to correct the last sentence - I guess once you get to a certain point with these messages there is no return. Oh well, things happen.
