Andrew, I am glad you are off Amiodarone. If you were on it any length of time I am sure your doctor will keep checking various enzymes for you. Amiodarone stays in your body for a long time as it is not secreted by kidneys or liver. I am just an elderly woman with an A-fib - have thought about ablation as well as "mini-maze" - but doctors who perform ablations say that mini-maze is not a long term solution-a-fib supposedly comes back in no time. But there is a gentleman named Ralph who had mini-maze and he did reply on 1-18-11. He knows the best how things are working with the A-fib.

Hi Andrew, when did you have the mini-maze and if I may ask you where did you have it done?? I live in Ct and there are not too many places where they perform it. Yale-New Haven Hospital used to do it but no more.
And being an elderly woman I might not be a candidate for it anyhow - if you are healthy with no other health problems and younger, then anything is possible.
They say it is more invasive, however, it has a less of a chance of getting a stroke like with ablation even though the doctors give you blood thinners while they are ablating you. If you don't mind telling where you had it done I would really appreciate it. Thanks Tutsi

My apologies to Andrew. The reply was meant for Ralph - he is the one who had the mini-maze.

I and others have tried this with success. I take 500mg of magnesium 2 to 3 times a day. It keeps my heart beating very normally. It relaxes your heart muscle and arteries and most people are deficient in this mineral.
My doctor wanted to put me on medication but I tried this first and it works great. Caffeine can also be a cause of palpations.

Cleveland Clinic is one of the best hospital for heart info. You do not need a doctor's referral for an appointment. Medicare pays for your check up and any treatment or surgery. Worth checking into.

Tutsi, my mini maze was done in Southern In. at one of their hospitals. I was 67 at the time. The procedure requires deflating one lung, temporarily, but didn't cause any problems. It did not last as long as an ablation, (which didn't work for me.) You might check with any university hospital in your state if you can't travel to Cleveland.

I have been taking Multaq for about 2 weeks and my heart still goes out of rythm. I eat a hardy meal before I take the medication but within 30 minutes of taking 400mg my heart starts to flutter adn beat irregularly. I had an ablassion 2 years ago and it lasted 9 months. I am concerned that nothing will fix this issue

connie--do you take the magnesium with calcium? What compound do you use e.g. mag orotate or mag oxide? Are you also taking Multaq? Thanks for your post.

I thought I was the only one to be frustrated with Multaq
I had a personal trainer, but I am unable to work out because of the governor the Multaq places on my heart. I am out of breath from walking up the steps at home. I went to an art exhibit and was sweating from the roots of my hair. Vanderbilt Hospital cariologists say that Afib is curable but I read and hear many different opinions...non of which are the same. Someone else had joined the conversation with Andy as a first name so I changed to coach to be less confussing for all readers

Has anyone on this forum experienced bouts of anxiety while taking Multaq?

I am taking magnesium oxide (from Walmart) and 2 separate pills of calcium citrate with vitamin D. The dose is 630mg and 500 IU per 2 caplets (Member's Mark brand from Sam's Club). I am not on any heart meds. Everything my doctor tried, made me sick. I take a lot of food supplements daily.

Yes Jeanne,I've been on Multaq for 14 months, it's not working at all anymore and I'm constantly anxious. In fact my hands shake, so I know I'm not at complete rest. I am in AF almost every day now. I have been on a waiting list for ablation for these past 14 months, am feeling so desperate that I'd like to ask American sufferers if they know the cost of ablation in the States, really do not want to keep waiting.

Thank you Suzanne for responding, I have been on Multaq for 4 months after being diagnosed with AF, I will say my episodes are few and far between, and when I do have an episode it doesn't last very long and I convert back within 2-3 hours after I begin an episode. I do have a lot of anxiety, but cardioligist tells me if I switch to another medicine I may not be able to tolerate any new med. Am also experiencing some high an low sugar readings, this was not a problem for me before Multaq. Primary care physician has me eating small meals every 2-3 hours. Even though experiencing some anxiety Multaq seem to be working for now. Good luck with ablation. Have not had this discussion with my cardiologist so I do not know the cost here in the States.

Ralph, thanks for the information. I have checked in my state and I believe there is only one more hospital left for me to check. You said the mini-maze was done at
"Southern In." was it at Southern Indiana?? or Southern Indiana hospital in Cleveland, Ohio?? How long has it been since you went thru with the mini-maze?? years or months?? Much appreciated.

I have been taking Multaq since last March. It has worked for me. I do sometimes get diarhrea but not enough to make me want to stop it. My EP also said (as was posted earlier) that the drug doesn't work for very many people. I started with V tach a year ago, and then the afib started a few months later after the death of my father. I am very concerned about the articles that say it can cause severe liver damage. I discussed it with my EP who said he thought it was OK so long as liver function was checked every 6 months. He is at the University of Colorado. But I'm going to discuss this with another EP in the near future. Does anyone have any thoughts about taking tylenol while on this drug? I know tylenol can also affect your liver.

Olen 69 vuotias mies, pituuteni on 171 cm ja paino 83 kg. Minulla on ollut verenpainetauti useita vuosia, flimmeri on ollut 3 vuotta. Flimmeri on 7 kertaa käännett sinusrytmiin sähköiskulla. Lääkkeeni ovat: 1 x 37,5 mg Spiresis, 1 x 7,5 mg Emconcor, 1 x 10 mg Amlodipin. Olen käyttänyt 3 päivää 2 x 400 Multaq. Haittavaikutuksena olen havainnut väsymyksen, jalkojen väsymyksen ja ajoittaisen sykkeen laskun päivisin alueelle 43-45. Välillä leposyke pysyttelee alueella 52-54. Olen käynyt 2 x kävelylekillä ja 1 x kuntosalilla, Multaq aiheuttaa lievän väsymyksen toistaiseksi. Yöuneni on jonkin verran parantunut.

Dear Vaino, from a Finn to another Finn.
Kirjoitatko Suomesta vai USA;sta?? Quite interesting.
Jos Sinulla on flimmeri or A-fib ollut 3 vuotta - oletko koskaan aatellut sita leikkausta or ablation for it?? Forgive me that mina sinuttelen but olen kait ollut liian kauan tassa maassa. Good luck to you!!

The cost of the surgery in Nashville is about $70K at Centenial or Vanderbilt hospital
I was on Multaq for 3 weeks and each time I took the medicine i went into Afib and became really anxious. I stopped taking it yesterday and I have had the best two days I have ever had in the last 4 weeks. I will see my cardiologist Wednesday and see what else I can do. I do not have insurance and $70 would be too expensive for my family at this time

I was sick sick sick on Multaq. Oh my goodness.... Went into my PMD and feeling so sick I couldn't even talk. Stomach pains, throwing up, jittery. Im on Tikosyn now, had one ablation, not sure if it worked. I am very symptomatic with AFib and will do ANYTHING to not be in AFib including another ablation or Maze procedure if neccesary.
