Metronidazole Lasting Side Effects (Page 9)

Updated

I have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...

You are having adverse side effects. Does your doctor know? If so, do they believe you? If they do not believe you, QUICKLY move on to another DR. or even ER-the side effects are never the same for anyone. Some are permanent, some are a few weeks, few months-there is NO WAY to tell. I am permanent as my dr. did not listen and I became more and more ill. I have been living in constant pain for over 4 years-on drugs that I would NEVER dream I would ever have been on....The FDA just put a warning on these drugs for perip. neuropathy being a side effect and permanent.

Mel, how long were you on Metronidazole, if that is in fact what you were on. I'd like to know because I also have PN symptoms and your post scared me and made me feel hopeless. Please reply soon. Thank you! Any other explanation of your experience would also be of help. :)

Hey Dgirl just wondering how you are going now? My panic has gotten a little bit better in the last few days but I am so foggy I feel half conscious I have the most severe depersonalization/derealization. I had no idea what this was and thought I was going mad until I jumped on google. Such a bizarre experience I really hope this clears up!! As someone who has had anxiety before is the DP/DR triggered by panic attacks? And does it go away? Because I have read people who had one panick attack and then months of DP/DR and I have literally had a month of solid panic so will it last ages?? I tried explaining the feeling to my father and the poor thing looked so worried I was losing my mind haha. Any help and info would be so greatly appreciated! Still can't believe and anti-biotic can cause all this suffering for so many people :( wish I could take it away for everyone

I was prescribed Flagyl 250mg x3 for 3 days for bacterial infection in stomach...i did not know the side effected before taking the medicines..and after 3 days they were the worst side effects...for continous 2-3 weeks i had dizziness, unsteadiness, increase in my blood pressure..muscle fatigue...but then called my doctor and he asked me to take magnesium orotate(at night) and benfotiamine(300mg)...these both helped me to cope up with fatigue and muscle pain..pls talk to your doctor before you take these vitamins...also try to avoid this medication(flagyl)..as soon as you know about the side effects..its almost 3 weeks and I am still weak and fatigues..hope all the side effecte go in next couple of days..but pls see your doctor as soon as you can to get over this medication,,,but my doctor did not agree that all the side effects were due to Flagyl,,,but reading them online...I am 100% confirmed its all Flagyl,,,this is poison,,,stay away....

As of tomorrow, it will be exactly 3 months since I have stopped the Augmentin. Things have gotten A LOT better, but are still not 100%. Taking the Cholestyramine to detoxify has helped a great deal! I also take loads of vitamins and try to drink lots of water. From what I've read in other forums, it generally takes 4-6 months to feel 100% back to normal. The panic I was experiencing is completely gone....the derealization/depersonalization- both gone. The only thing left over is the depression- and it has gotten wwaaaaay better- I just get mild waves of it every other day or so. I think for me, that will be the last thing to go. Another annoying thing that has happened is that I have been breaking out all over my chin- I hadn't had a zit in 10 years. That is because my body is desperately trying to detoxify of this poison- it's a side effect of the detoxification. Anyway, please hang in there- you will be FINE. It seems like you are permanently damaged, but that is absolutely not true- I have to tell myself this everyday. The body has an incredible ability to heal itself. I am SO MUCH better than I was last month- there really is no comparison to how I felt last month. I am almost back to normal- I'd say I'm 90% better. I tried to leave you my email address on my last post, but this site wouldn't let me... ugh. Take care!

Hi DCLC, I reread your posts and your story is very close to mine even the time period. It was a year since my last dose July 2nd. of this year. I too have weeks of thinking it's gone and weeks or months to where I feel hopeless with the weird sensations in my arms and legs, mostly legs. Could you please tell me how you are doing now? Thanks! I hope you are doing well. :)

dgirl, I'm so glad to hear that you are doing so much better. I hope to find the Cholestyramine you speak of. It would be nice if we could exchange emails on here. I believe there is a way if done through the administrator but have no idea how to. Sounds like you are doing all of the right things and it's paying off. Thanks for giving me hope with your story. :)

hi whatnow the brain fog which was totally horrid has now gone 100%. im still weak and wobbley dragging my feet some times, arms & legs feel so heavy tingling has eased but the really strange feeling on my back which is like the clothes are sticking to me is still there, i took this for 7 days and a few days later had to take for another 7 day course of a tooth infection so 14 days in total when i think back to last year when i was on the phone to the gp saying im so weak i cant even hold the phone to my ear (my wife was holding phone i really did not have the strength ) and all they said was well see how you get on over the weekend ,well to days later i was in A/E they were useless they said i was fine and to drink plenty of water what a joke iv never drunk soooo much it did nothing the damage had already begun i thing with this in mind im a lot better now but in my view this stage may now be permanent this drug has almost destroyed my buisness as iam self employed and for a while was turning work away not knowing where my health was going this is just very wrong i wish we colud group together to bring some justice.

I'm so sorry to hear that you've gone through so much with this so called medicine, DCLC. Since it was over the holiday weekend last year when I took it, I called the pharmacist who told me that it was probably the high heat that was affecting me this way and that I shouldn't stop taking it. This was before the tingling and heavy leg feelings. I only took a few more doses after that phone call. However, looking back I wonder if I had only listened to my body and stopped then would I be experiencing such turmoil now. I too wish there was a group of us who could somehow sue the pharmaceutical company. I sure would be willing. This medication should be taken off of the market!!! Some doctors get me mad. If they had to take the stuff or their family members and they had these types of nerve damage from it, they wouldn't be saying it's not from the drug. At this point I don't trust antibiotics in general or other pain drugs. We're guinea pigs and they don't know or care what effects these have on one's body or mind. Especially long term. Okay I've done my ranting. Please know that I'm here to talk to. Even if it's to get some of your frustration out. :) ... and thanks for replying and sharing, I appreciate it.

Cipro is in the fluorquinolone class of antibiotics and the FDA recently posted a warning as a black box warning for peripheral neuropathy and before that there was a black box warning for tendon rupture.

Cipro & flagyl can cause permanent damage, get off that poison asap. Look up new fda warning about cipro!

The side effects of metronidazole seem greater than the sickness. At least in my opinion from observations made to my mother's 14 day medication.

I was prescribed a 10 day course of Flagyl by my dentist for a gum infection . On the 3rd day I started having pain in both legs and my lower back. I did not stop because I feared the gum infection would not go away. Now I am seriously considering stopping I. I still have 2 more days left.My legs still hurt and it's very uncomfortable. I am worried about any damage.

hello everyone, im 26 and around june/ july became ill with various infections, so i had been on 4 diffrent course of antibiotics and medications, as i had not got better i was referred to hospital to gets scans done e.t.c aand as a final descison from the doctor i needed a stronger dose of antibiotics and a longer course, metronidazole as one and it was intended as a 14 day course. I wanted to be better so bad that i would have taken anything but if i knew how i was gonna feel after taking this awful drug i would definitely have reconsidered, 2 months have passed since finishing my course and for these two months i have really bad muscle weakness in my right leg which developed into ankle pain also. Now its seems to be progressing to my other leg and my arms are shaking. i have severe anxiety a prob i never had before. i struggle to hold my 7 month old baby and the dizziness i have suffered makes getting around with my baby and 2 year old toddler a miserable, dangerous and painful experience. Having a new baby this year was meant to be a joyous occasion but i have had nothing to smile about these days as the uncomfortable sensations and mental feelings im experiencing are just getting worse, i will be seeing a doctor soon and i hope to get answers or receive some kind of hope that this is only a tempory phase and over time i will feel better. fingers crossed. As for everyone else i feel your pain and know how awful this is, i hope you all get answers and dont have to live with this forever . .. Christina

Hi Christina, I'm so sorry to hear your story. I don't know about you, but I feel like a victim of this poison they call medication. I can't imagine having to take care of a baby or small children feeling as you do. If I were you and you I would go to a well researched naturopath, one that has dealt with toxic poisoning. I'm trying to save enough money to do that myself but it's been over a year for me so I hope it's not too late. I'll be praying for you. Keep me posted as to how you are doing. Hugs

Hi, It might be a yeast infection which sometimes a person gets after antibiotics. But only a doctor would know unless you've had one before and can tell. I would pick up some good probiotics to take because as you probably already know an antibiotic kills the good bacteria along with the bad which affects the flora of the stomach and also the privates as in yeast infection. An antifungal for yeast infection can be picked up at your pharmacy. Hope all goes well.

Joanna, like DCLC, it has been over a year for me too and the symptoms you describe were mine as well. Not too scare you, but please STOP!! I should have posted this sooner. I hope after reading some of the post on here you didn't take the extra 2 days worth that you had left.
