My friend was recently diagnosed w/ early onset alzheimer's. He has been taking Lexapro(20mg) and klonopin(.5 to 1mg) daily for 4 yrs for anxiety and depression. The neurologist who diagnosed him wants to end the Lexapro and klonopin and try celexa (as well as galantamine for the alzheimer's). His psychiatrist disagrees and wants to continue the Lexapro and klonopine (at a slightly lower dose). That combo had not been working effectively for about 6 months and there is a lot of literature suggesting that long term use of klonopin esp. in older people causes cognitive decline, which is why I think he ought to ignore the psychiatrist. He is uneasy about this conflict in treatment. What should he do? Also, any other viable choices to help w/ anxiety/depression for someone w/ early onset alzheimer's?
