Comments Submitted:

my 18 year old son has been diagnosed with severe depression. His psychiatrist has him on 2 capsules daily of fluoxetine HCL 20 mg each along with 2 tablets daily of Budeprrion SR 150 mg each. To me, this seems like an awful lot of drugs for a young person to handle. They don't seem to be working. He's just lying around the house, not interested in joining in with family or friends and basically sleeps all day. I'm concerned that this is doing him more harm than good. Can this lead to an addiction to drugs?

Your son is showing some of the classic symptoms of depression so it sounds like a great idea that he is taking antidepressants. He is taking 40 mg/day of Prozac and 300 mg/day of Wellbutrin. That is a pretty good combination IMO; and by no means is it a lot for severe depression. Up to 80 mg/day of Prozac can be taken; up to 450mg/day (& even more) of Wellbutrin can be taken together. Unfortunately, antidepressants do take time to work. Moreover, not all antidepressants are effective for everyone, so at some point your child's doctor might switch the medications your child is taking. But please persist with treatment! Eventually your child's doctor wil hit on a medicine or combination of medicines that will lift your child out of depression.

reply to Tomlin,
I neglected to mention that my son was first put on i pill daily prozac in March of last year, then added 2 pills of wellbuterin in April. Later in April of last year he took an overdose of wellbuterin by 2 pills, and ended up having a seizure. Was brought to the emergency room and kept overnight for observation. No more seizures occured, so he was released back home by the Hospital psychiatrist who told us that even 3 pills of wellbuterin could make him have a seizure. She put him on just 1 prozac & 1 wellbuterin a day. Now his own psychiatrist has increased his wellbuterin back to 2 a day & added 2 prozacs daily, because my son told him they weren't doing anything for him. All the same doses as previosly mentioned. We've caught our son smoking weed and taking other prescription drugs along with his own. He gets them from the kids he knows. He's addicted to these and has no energy for what he used to have. I feel he's using depression as an excuse to get drugs. He's been in and out of rehabs with no positive results. He's very forgetful and getting very lazy. This is just not my son that he used to be.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Do teens use depression as a way of getting this stuff in hopes that the'll get pain pills?

Wow, you've posted a lot of information here. And it's all important. To keep things relatively simple, I'll first say that forgetfulness and being lazy are more classic symptoms of depression. And clinical depression's pretty difficult to fake.
Also, it's a fact that Wellbutrin can cause seizures. It is, therefore, worrisome that your son's psychiatrist put him back on Wellbutrin after the seizure considering that there are so many options available. I'd question the psychiatrist as to why s/he is continuing to follow this course of treatment after hospitalization for a Wellbutrin-caused seizure. I'd seriously consider looking for a different psychiatrist at this time. Further, I'd want to get a second opinion as to diagnosis. Your son may be bipolar which would require a different course of treatment than unipolar depression. Also, it does sound as if your son is self-medicating with marijuana and other drugs which is very typical behavior for mentally ill individuals. It does appear that he is genuinely in need of effective psychiatric help - plus the full support of yourself and others. A LCSW or psychologist in addition could be a great help. With effective treatment he will come out of this in time.

Tomlison & Sandy, thanks for your input. We'll be seeing his phyciatrist this week and I will mention, no insist that he start weening him off these meds. I honestly do believe that my son is NOT depressed at all but is faking this. He does say that the meds do NOT help him, so why take them? I have a lot of questions for his Doctor. I'll most likely switch Doctors as I feel that he only cares about handing about more and more prescriptions into of really listening to my son. Thanks again.

I AM BIPOLAR , WITH MAJOR DEPRESSION , AND MANIA. THEY STARTED ME ON MEDS AWHILE AGO , FOR SOMETIME THEY HELPED , I WAS ALSO PUT ON WELLBUTRIN FOR BOTH REASONS OF DEPRESSION AND TO TRY TO STOP SMOKING. WELL THAT WAS A BAD THING , WITH MY BIPOLAR I DON'T KNOW FROM DAY TO DAY WHAT MY MOOD NOR TOLERENCE WILL BE. I LIVE A ROLLER COASTER AND IT'S PURE HELL. SOMETIMES YOU FEEL LIKE , IF THIS IS HOW I HAVE TO LIVE THE REST OF MY LIFE ,GOOD GOD WHY??? WELLUTRIN MADE IT WORSE , I WENT BAKWARDS REAL FAST AND NOW HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN , GET RIGHT WITH MY MEDS.. THE WORST THING YOU COULD DO RIGHT NOW , IS NOT BELEIVE YOUR SON!!! HE WILL REALLY FEEL ALONE THEN. BE PATIENT , BE THERE , DON'T PUSH. I'M ALSO IN TALK THERAPY ,IT HELPS SOME. I WILL NEVER BE NORMAL EVER , AND THATS HARD , VERY HARD TO ADMIT , REALLY HARD!! AND WHEN PEOPLE TELL ME TO GET OVER IT , WOW I WISH I COULD GET OVER IT , TRUST ME. NOW I HAVE SOCIAL ANXIETY , CAUSE I SHUT MYSELF IN THE HOUSE AND ONLY TALK TO A HANDFUL OF PEOPLE ON THE PHONE. I GO OUT TO THE GROCERY STORE AND TO DOCTOR APPTS. THATS IT!!!!! I SEE ALOT OF DOCTORS ALSO CAUSE I HAVE PHYSICAL PROBS ALSO. AND THAT ADDS TO MY DEPRESSION CAUSE I CAN'T GET THE HELP I NEED ON THAT END OF MY PROBLEMS , EXCEPT GET THE RUN AROUND. I COULD GO ON , BUT MY MAIN MESSAGE IS BELEIVE HIM , THERE IS NO WAY TO FAKE THIS KIND OF DEPRESSION, ITS A JOB JUST TO GET UP AND GO TO THE BATHROOM , THATS HOW BAD IT CAN GET , PEOPLE JUST DON'T GET IT. IT TAKES EVERY THING YOU HAVE , AND IT HURTS TOO. MORE PEOPLE TAKE THEIR LIFE , BECAUSE PEOPLE DON'T GET IT

I am on Welbutrin 150MG SR that I take twice daily. My doctor originally started me for 1 pill a day to start me off. He originally put me onto this to help with my slight depression mood and a quit smoking aid, which really helped the first time. Then I stopped taking the medicine and it was a big mistake, now I am back to 2 a day and I still smoke without hesitation.
Anyways, your sons not faking it. Plus they would NEVER give him pain pills for depression. Prozac is a good way to start. I hear most people take Kolonopin for anxiety which your son may also have, which is another reason prozac was prescribed.
The only problem with anti-anxiety and anti-depression medicine is somethime it numbs you up so well that all you do is sleep. It doesn't mean your depressed, its just the fact that the medicine has worked overtime and numbs your son to any feeling (including depression) whatsoever.
Furthermore, you mention you have caught him using Prescription drugs that weren't his. This could be a HUGE problem, the medicine hes prescribed to and the medicine he is taking that he is not prescribed to could have a devastating effect. Marajuana isnt a huge case for concern.
Many kids habitually use marajuana and sometimes it even helps them, although a doctors words on that will be critically different. I don't smoke marajuana because I think its a stupid drug, but most kids self medicate with that especially.

Anyone know the difference between Budeprion SR 150GX and Budeprion HCL SR 150 E415. The first is a yellow pill and the second one is purple. My pharmacy just sent me the second when I ordered the first. Same thing??
