Recent Posts About percocet abuse at The People's Medicine Community. my friend has been taking percocets for 3 years now. he takes 3- (5mg)? every day. another friend says he taking (10mg) pills but saying they are (5mg) pills. he says that they are for his aching back. he is at least 40 lbs overweight. he does have a legal perscription for them so he says that he is fine and i should mind my own business. recently he says his kidneys hurt or at least there is a pain in that area. am i being over cautious or is my friend in danger? any help or facts may help me to sway him.

You know what makes me MAD... Is the people that make up pain or the people that can take a asprin and the pain gos away... I hear of people going to the doctor and act like they are in so much pain just to get the pill for a high !!! It makes it so hard for the people that are really in pain. It is sad !!

This is from someone who is taking 5mg percocet 4 times daily.

I got hurt about 15 years ago. Major muscle and tendon damage in my lower back and right hip.

Could he be addicted? Sure he could be and most likely is to some degree. Prolonged use of any type of codiene will cause addiction.

Regarding his weight. When you live with 'real' back pain every single day your activity level will drop off. Hence your weight will increase. Added weight will aggravate a back injury. Controlling your weight when you can barely walk 50 yards is a constant fight.

You might want to suggest one of the 'ab systems' that use electric current to stimulate the muslces of your abs and obliques. They help to build up your core muscles. Those are the main muscles that help to improve backpain. They will also burn up a bunch of fat around your friends mid-section.

If his pain is real you have to balance everything out.
1. Does his pain keep him from living a normal life?
2. Does the Percocet let him live a normal life?
3. Is he better off being addicted to a medicine that lets him function or better off laying on the couch in pain?

Ask him to have a liver enzyme test done to make sure the tylenol in the percocet is not hurting his liver. I have one done every year.

My thoughts are to let him be if he really needs the pills. Too many people focus on the addiction aspect instead of the quality of life aspect.

My son in law has a legal perscription because he says he has a lot of leg pain. He only says this to get the drugs. He has been addicted for a long time to different drugs, he will take anything. Now it is percacet. He even offered to his wife, and she unknowing took a couple because she trusted him. Now, she is hooked on the drug and he has to share them with her. If you know the physician your friend goes to, inform him of your friends problem.

The fact that somebody has to take such a strong pain killer every day for more than three years for an aching back, sounds like someone who, don't get me wrong, he could really be in pain, is probaly addicted. After 3 years his body would go thru withdrawl without taking his daily dose. Take it from someone who was there once. Quit now, and get help

3 pills a day is a normal dosing of this medication and if he has a legal prescription to use them, there isn't a lot you can do, other than voice your concerns and advise him to speak to his doctor regarding his additional pain.
