Sorry, I wanted to add something else and forgot.

Recently, the original company that marketed Neurontin under the name brand proprietary patent (Pfizer) got in trouble, they were going around to doctors and touting it as being approved and effective to treat many conditions, when in actuality, the FDA had only approved it for treating Epileptic Seizures and nerve pain caused by Shingles.

Now, it is perfectly legal for a doctor to try a drug for off lable uses, and to learn about other uses from their experience prescribing it for patients, this is often how we discover great new uses for a drug, and why you doctor may give you a drug for a certain condition, but if you read the patient monograph about it, you won't see anything on there saying it is approved for that usage.

However, it is illegal for the drug company to tout the drug as being effective for other uses that have not been approved by the FDA. So Pfizer has been sanction and has to pay some serious finds over this issue.

Now, the reason I was bringing this up, is that means that the research has never been done yet to see what all conditions Neurotnin can be effect for, and how high of a dose is safe.

That could very well be the reason that doctors are showing new fear about the drug and worried about people on high doses of it. Since, as I said, most doctors take their knowledge from the reps of the drug company, and don't always have the time to sit down and read the exact details of the drug, they are now of course worried that the drug reps mislead them and some patients could be on a dangerous amount of the drug, or that it will not manage their pain as expected.

I hope that helps to explain why this new attitude might have arise.

Since I do respond to posts here and try to provide correct and accurate information for those seeking it, I try to read up on all new medical information, company sanctions, recalls, and etc. And I just read a recent article about this and the trouble that Pfizer has gotten into over their actions.

Well if you were on a really high dosage and they cut you down to an much lower one abruptly, then they made a big mistake. That can be very dangerous, your body does get dependent on anything you take like that for a long period of time and you will experience withdrawal effects, which explains your migraines and pain. On top of that, and abrupt stop can also cause seizures, if I were you, I would definitely find the drug information and print it out and hand it to your doctor before they make anymore decision on the dosage change. Some doctors don't really read up on a med, so they don't really know all the details.

This is the first time I have ever heard of doctors being afraid of using it. Most are quite enamored with the drug, since the dosage can be taken so high, without od problems to relieve someone's pain, and the fact that it has less side effects than narcotic and opiate alternatives.

Yes, though Neurontin did not help me at all, I would love to be able to lower my med reliance, but right now I have no other options. There aren't anymore pain management places in our area, so seeing our family doc and the pain specialist they have there is my only remaining choice. I hate the drowsiness and the high feeling I get from narcotics and would gladly give them up if I could.

As to the high doses of Neurontin, that is why many doctors like it as a pain treatment, less side effects than regular analegesics and they can take the dosage up very, very high, without risk of overdose as it would take a tremendous amount to cause OD with this drug.

I have severe neuropathy & take gabapentin (neurontin) 800mg every 8 hours. Plus I take avinza 120mg 3 capsules every 12 hours & oxycontin 80m 2 tablets every 12 hours. I feel sleeply also, but I don't know if it's the neurontin or a combination of everything. If I can, I take a nap every afternoon, but I also don't get up or get going until 10-11 o'clock everyday. Starting on my forth year of not being able to work because of how the meds make me feel & the pain in my feet. Don't know if this helps, but the neurontin never made me feel druck or anything else I can think of.
