Drug OverviewAcetaminophen + Hydrocodone combines two types of pain medicine to treat moderate to severe pain. The Hydrocodone (related to codeine) is in a class of drugs called narcotic analgesics (which act in the central nervous system [CNS] to relieve pain), while the Acetaminophen (a less potent pain reliever) is used to boost the effects of the Hydrocodone. It is important to know that this medication can become extremely addicting, and your doctor might recommend for you to gradually lower your dose after being on it for several weeks. It is a violation of federal law to provide/transfer Acetaminophen + Hydrocodone to anybody other than the person who it was prescribed for. This medicine is available in many different forms under numerous other brand names (including a Generic form).
As with any prescription drug, keep your doctor informed of any and all side effects. More common side effects may include dry mouth, itching, pinpoint pupils, dizziness, drowsiness, constipation, confusion, gas / heartburn, or flushed skin. If you experience irregular heartbeat or chest pain, difficulty breathing, wheezing, unusual weakness, cold / clammy skin, severe rash, fever, chills, or muscle aches and pains then notify your physician or prescriber ASAP! Also note that elderly patients have a higher likelihood of side effects.
Before You take Acetaminophen + HydrocodoneNotify your physician if any of the following apply to you: heart or circulation problems, lung disease or difficulty breathing, infection, anemia, problems urinating, constipation, seizures / other neurological disorders, hepatitis, liver disease, kidney disease, an allergic or abnormal reaction to (hydrocodone, acetaminophen, other opioid analgesics, foods, dyes or preservatives), if you are receiving cancer chemotherapy or other immunosuppressant medicine, if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant, or if you are breast-feeding.
While You Are Taking Acetaminophen + HydrocodoneIf your pain does not go away, worsens, or if new / different kinds of pain appear, notify your doctor! Take Acetaminophen + Hydrocodone EXACTLY as directed by your physician or prescriber. Never take other pain medications with Acetaminophen + Hydrocodone without getting specific instructions from your doctor. Do not take more than the recommended dosage - that could increase the possibility of liver damage or effects on your breathing. If you get fever, chills, muscle aches and pains, or other flu-like symptoms, notify your doctor (DO NOT treat it yourself). Signs of an infection (fever or pain) may be hidden by acetaminophen. You may experience drowsiness when you first start taking Acetaminophen + Hydrocodone, or when you change doses. Until you know how this drug affects you, do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else which requires mental alertness. To reduce the risk of dizzy or fainting spells do not sit down or stand up quickly. After taking Acetaminophen + Hydrocodone for a couple of days, drowsiness should decrease. You may sleep more for the first few days that your pain is controlled if you had previously missed sleep due to pain. Exercise caution when taking other medicines which make you drowsy. Please note that alcohol can increase damage to your liver, drowsiness, dizziness, confusion and affect your breathing. Avoid alcohol while taking this drug. You may also experience constipation from Acetaminophen + Hydrocodone. If you do, then be sure to take a laxative or stool softener. You should be having a bowel movement at least once every 2-3 days. If not then your physician might recommend that you receive assistance such as an enema or a suppository. It is also important to note that may over-the-counter products contain acetaminophen (such as Tylenol, etc.) - read the labels carefully and avoid them in order to avoid an accidental overdose. If you are diabetic, acetaminophen can affect the results from some blood sugar tests. Check with your doctor before you change your diet or the dose of your diabetic medicine. If you are going to have surgery be sure to let your physician know if you are currently taking this drug.
Read the entire prescription label and follow the directions carefully. To reduce any unpleasant effects on your stomach or throat, take Acetaminophen + Hydrocodone with a full glass of water (and with food or milk optionally). Try not to take it just before lying down. Do not take this medicine more often than directed! For Children you should contact their pediatrician, as special care may be needed with this drug. Never share a prescription of Acetaminophen + Hydrocodone with anybody. If You Missed a Dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, then take ONLY that dose. DO NOT double-up or take extra doses.
Possible Drug InteractionsTHIS IS ONLY A PARTIAL LIST. Be sure to always check with your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, or if you are stopping or starting any other medicines (including non-prescription medication, herbal products, or nutritional supplements). The following may cause adverse reactions with Acetaminophen + Hydrocodone: alcohol, medicines for high blood pressure, drugs for seizures, cimetidine, warfarin, antacids. Other medicines which cause drowsiness may increase the effects of this drug. Some examples of this are: barbiturates such as phenobarbital, medicines which contain alcohol, muscle relaxants, certain tranquilizers or antidepressants, certain antihistamines used in cold medicines. The effectiveness of Acetaminophen + Hydrocodone may also be affected if you smoke, if you are a frequently consume drinks with alcohol or caffeine, or if you use illegal drugs.
Storage InstructionsKEEP OUT OF REACH FROM CHILDREN - use a child-proof container. Do not share or give Acetaminophen + Hydrocodone to anybody else. Store at room temperature (generally between 59 to 86 degrees fahrenheit - 15 to 30 degrees celsius). Keep the container tightly closed and protect from light. Throw away any unused medicine once the expiration date is reached.
