I was told to take six(6) tablets of sodium bicarbonate 650mg for 2 months by my doctor.
After I got this result (CT stonogram) from a reputable hospital in Metro Manila.

Technique: Multiaxial images of the abdomen were obtained with emphasis on the urinary tract. No intravenous contrast was given.

Findings:
The kidneys are lower limits of normal size. However, there is increase collection of the hilar fat suggestive of parenchymal atrophic changes. No perinephric fluid collection is appreciated. Hypodense foci are seen in both kidneys with the largest noted in the superior pole measuring 1.8 x 1.8 cm on the right and 1.0 x 1.2 cm on the left. There is a 1.0 x 0.5 x 1.3 cm hyperdensity in the inferior calyx of the left kidney with an HU of 805. Smaller hyperdensities are also seen in the cortical aspect of the left kidney measuring 0.3cm. There are also tiny hyperdense foci (2) in the inferior calyx of the right kidney measuring 0.2cm. The renal pelvices and ureters are not dilated. The urinary bladder is fluid-filled with no abnormal wall thickening appreciated.

The result of the visualized organs including the adrenal glands appear unremarkable.

Impression:
1. Bilateral nephrolithiases.
2. Hypodense foci in both kidneys, likely representing cysts.
3. Dystrophic parechymal calcifications in the left kidney possibly due to a previous infection or inflammation.

Please tell me why did my doctor told me to take sodium bicarbonate instead of rowatinex?

Is it true that sodium bicarbonate produce kidney stones, heart failure, hypertension and other heart and kidney failures? I already informed my doctor that I high blood pressure, my heart is getting large and I'm taking maintenance medicine, 50mg of ATENOLOL and 10mg of ENALAPRIL Maleate, plus I have high uric acid resulting to frequent gout attacks.

Please be honest with your reply, if my doctor is trying make my kidney stones larger so that he will be able to take them out easily together with the cysts, then I would understand.

Thank you.
