Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 6)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

Becky, same thing is happening to me. I took the med for 3 weeks as well. All the side effects are gone and blood pressure is pretty reasonable. Except my heart rate is always in the 90s during the day and early evenings. After midnight it sometimes goes down to the 80s. But I'm worried that it won't go back to normal. I've been off the medication fully for 3.5 weeks now.

My heart rate does the same thing and my blood pressure. Dr. Stephen Sinatra is an intergrative cardiologist, he has a page where he answers questions. Of course without your medical history he can only say so much. I described my symptoms and he said it sounds like A Fib. Surely this medication didn't cause that in 3 weeks?? I'm scheduled for a stress test and I have to wear a holter monitor (not sure of the spelling) for 48 hrs., maybe they can find out what's causing this. My insurance won't pay for either one but I have to at least try to figure this out. My doctor scheduled these things because of the chest pain but she said I know you're fine. She makes me feel like a hypochondriac. Time to find a new doctor.

Travis, I am feel the same way. My sense of consciousness is cloudy and I get shots of dizziness. It is getting better. I was on metoprolol for over nine years so I expect it to take awhile to get back to normal. I look forward to being drug free in April. I started with 75 mg, then 50 mg and now I am taking 25 mg. It will get better just make sure your being weaned properly.

okay so ill start from the begining....
I went to the ER three months ago because while at work I started feeling light headed and dizzy then my heart started to pound and my BP went up sky high. The Doctors at the ER said i was dehydrated from all the drinking i did during the weekend. A few days after that i went to my doctors office and he gave me Metoprolo and Lorazepan. Metoprolol for my blood pressure since it was high at the ER and Lorazepam if I feel funny or my heart starts pumping out of my chest. The First night I took it.... in the morning I got up to use the restroom. I got so dizzy and fell off the toilet. Called my doctor and he said to take only half the pill so 25mg from 50mg. I took the 25mg for 2-3 weeks and felt like i was losing my mind made me nervous, scared, my feet would get very cold, the anxiety made me crazy, I felt dizzy and like I wasnt in my own body. I went to the ER maybe 3 time because of all that. I was also taking 1mg of lorazepam 3 times a day because i felt terrible from taking the BP med. For those 2-3 weeks i felt so sick and medicated out. I almost lost my mind. I kept calling and calling my doctor about the pill and he kept saying it was me and my body needs time to adjust and to keep taking the Lorazepam if i feel bad. Then I started to ween off after reading about the side effects. I did the half dose for a week then half of that and ect.... until I had to cut it with a razer blade. After everytime I halfed a dose same day my heart would start pounding to 130-160 bpm then my blood pressure would spike and i would panic and go to the ER. But slowly I would start feeling more alive everyday. At the ER they did blood test, EKG,Cat scans, chest x-rays, ultrasounds of my heart and I even did a stress test with my cardiologist which i got after my normal doctor gave up and said i need to see one. All test came back as i have a perfect heart. It drove me nuts knowing im feeling like im dieing and having all these test come back normal. But now I have been off all the pills for 6 days. im starting to feel more alive and less dizzy. I still feel anxious and nervous but i think its slowly going away. Today also my chest started feeling heavy and started feeling like i couldnt breath without really trying. So far only two days ago my heart started beating fast around 160bpm and my BP shot up to 200/110 but it only lasted 30sec and i didnt go to the ER so im hopeing that was the last time because of getting off the metoprolol. When that happens its so scary cause it comes out of no where and i feel like im dieing and going to pass out. oh.. also im 31 and have never been sick in my life like this..Im wondering what everyone thinks, what should i do, has anyone felt like this, and how long does these side effect last because if it aint the pills then something is wrong with me and im just so freaked out about all of this that im starting to get really depressed. i havent left the house to do anything but the doctors and ER in three months just dont know what to do...

thanks and much aloha's

Hi John, I posted yesterday but don't see it. Anyway, I've been off the medication since early September. After 2 or 3 weeks I thought I was fine and then the racing heart & chest pains came back even worse. I hope that doesn't happen to you. I'm scheduled for a stress test and I have to wear a Holter monitor for 48 hours. Hopefully I'll find out something that may be causing this.

Hi becky... what do you mean by a racing heart? How fast does it get? Is it just alway fast or is it like mines where its normal then itstarts besting fast out of no where?

Hi Travis, sometimes it gets in the low 100's. A lot of times it's in the 90's. It starts racing for no reason. When my blood pressure is high, my heart rate is low (upper 70's, low 80's) and when my blood pressure is low (good low) my heart rate is high. I asked my doctor about it and she seemed to have no idea why. I can't imagine just taking a drug for 3 weeks would cause that but I never had these problems before.

Travis, are you on any BP medication at this time? Have you ever been treated for anxiety/ panic?
200/110 is a very high BP. Have you informed your doctor that it's spiked this high?
I know 'staying calm' is impossible during times like this. Hang in there...and keep going to different Dr's if you're not getting results with your current ones.

Hi...rick
No I have never had anxiety before and I'm not on any bp medications. This all just started at once. My bp now is around110-125/77-83 and 60-80p. But when I was on metoprolol it was always higher. Within a day or so after I stopped taking it evertthing went down. I'm just hopeing that I really was dehydrated the first time and my doctor jumped the gun and put me on the medications..that's pretty much where all my hope is right now. before all this my b lood pressure was pre-hyper but I have last 25pounds so I'm hoping I am normal now. Ive been searching everywhere for someone withthe same symptom s as me but everyones experience differs maybe because there are so many side effects. Is there anyone that has completely got off and feel 100 percent again?

Wow... i started reading all these posts. I can't believe how much we are all suffering from these medications. I feel so bad for all of us. Its terrible that these doctors give us this crap and don't listen. I'm not sure my doctors even know the side effects or even care. I remember telling both my doctors about my side effects and they both said and laughed did you google it? Terrible... i told them I googled it because I was feeling this way and they just pass it off as nothing. Sometimes I hope that hell has a special place for these people... sorry just venting...

I feel the same way Travis. Last week she gave me a double diuretic. HCTZ which I already take and Triamterene. Within 5 minutes of taking it I was so sick. Ruined my whole day, I couldn't do anything, especially drive. I can tell my Dr. is getting frustrated with me. She all but said the reason my blood pressure is high is because I stopped taking Metoprolol. I'm already on Lisinopril which gives me a dry cough and HCTZ. This has been the most frustrating thing in my life. I feel like I went from healthy to feeling like crap most of the time because of these drugs. You can't talk to most doctors about the side effects because they deny they exist. I'm just trying to do what I can by eliminating most sodium, sugar, caffeine etc. Sometimes my blood pressure is too high but I don't know what else I can do. It sucks.

Okay so day 8.
I'm kinda feeling a little better today. I still get those waves of feeling anxious, nervous, and kinda shakey. No pounding heart moments yet for 4 days. I feel like I'm just waiting for it to happen. But I'm starting to move around the house more so maybe its a sign I'm getting better my bp and bpm have been pretty stable and normal. I just want to be over with this already. I still don't have the feeling or interest to leave or drive anywhere since I'm scared to do anything but I guess I must build up some confidence in myself sooner or later. I think maybe ill try waiting an other week. I don't know if its that or I'm in some kind of depression....

Hi Travis, I'm doing better the last couple days. Sunday was when my blood pressure went up, I could feel it, I knew it was going to be high when I checked it. It's been good since Monday. I'm not eating a lot of sodium. I also stopped drinking my 16 oz of caffeinated coffee in the morning. This has happened before where my blood pressure was really good for a week or two and then for no reason went way up without doing anything different. I've been off Metoprolol since about mid September. Hang in there Travis!

Travis... you sound exactly how I was :-( I been off this awful drug since June (My story is below somewhere) and I am still having trouble driving because of dizzy spells and bouts with anxiety. I believe this drug triggered some kind of panic/anxiety in me to come out 10 fold. I am still trying to calm down 5 months later :-( I do not think I am dealing with actual side effects anymore BUT I am dealing with the anxiety and panic that this drug caused.

Hi Tracy & Travis, Tracy that's interesting. I notice lately I have anxiety pretty bad. Never thought about that being a side effect of the drug.

Travis, I started feeling better in a couple weeks after getting off the metoprolol and my blood pressure was actually good for 2 or 3 weeks and then suddenly went back up for no reason. It's been good and bad, since then. Some of the side effects started after I got off.

My doctor just took me off Metoprolol and the second day I noticed my heart rate and blood pressure up. does this medication also give a side effect of back aches. Also today I had to take a half an ativan to relax my anxieties and a baclofen to help relax my muscles. Have any of you experience back pain after going off this drug

Susan, I haven't experienced back pain. I looked up the side effects and they have them listed in 3 categories. More common, less common and rare. Lower back pain is listed under the rare side effects.
