I think I remember seeing the scopolamine cream on Steven's website but its been a while since I was looking around. I have never ordered anything from them, but i think that others had mentioned getting pills from them in this discussion thread. I have not used a scopolamine cream or ointment before, just the patch. So I can't speak to to it any more then to say it exists. It seams like such a simple thing for a compounding pharmacy to make though so it might not be a bad idea to just call one and see if they could make it up. If anyone does please post here about it. There are some people who have posted here reporting that the scopolimine was helpful for them but that they had problems with both pills and the patch. A cream or ointment could potentially be very helpful to them.

I would think crushing the pill into a fine powder, then dissolving in a small amount of liquid mixed with skin lotion would do the trick (I'm guessing). I'm out of pills unless I get more at next Dr appointment so can't try it. However, I am going to try something different called Piracetam that some have said online helped their depression. Google it to find out more. It is not RX.

Just an update...I broke down and put another patch on despite the reaction, I'm actually on patch #2 now. I am having some severe depression right now and it is not helping me at all :( Also, the Piracetam did nothing either.

All of you...thankyou, for sharing your experiences, pain, and successes. I too, suffer from trd, and lately have taken small doses of subutex (buprenorphine)"off label" which has helped my depression; however, it can cause physical addiction. Typically, it is prescribed for drug addicts, but depression is the reason I take it. However, when I decided to go off the low dose (1 mg) of subutex, I developed physical withdrawal symptoms. I would like to get off it and try something that might not cause addiction build up. Many of you have discussed ketamine and scopolamine.....and I am going to look at the site David supplied of doctors who may prescribe new drugs off label. It seems to me that many of you who have written are concerned, as I am, about side effects. I have tried almost everything with limited success, and currently take some prozac, and ativan along with the buprenorphine. As I get older, I really want to relieve myself of depression, without going up on the subutex, because more side effects occur in older people. I am 58 and female and exercise regularly, which has been very helpful. But if any of you have had experience withdrawing from Subutex, please give me some advice. I am scared because I had such bad withdrawal symptoms, and at first thought I needed to go to the emergency room, but then realized it was withdrawal...so I took the buprenorphine again.

I have tried my first patch. I am taking wellbutrin XL as well as B12 and magnesium and I am almost all the way off of Effexor XR - which i weaned off by opening the capsule and dumping bit by bit - the only way that has worked for me with no side effects. I had been "ok" then I had 4 days of not getting out of bed and lots of crying...I thought it could be attributed to PMS though, as I do get severe symptoms. I decided to slap a patch on because of it though, and I wore it for 3 days - just removed it today. The only side effect I've had is almost complete lack of appetite, which I haven't seen mentioned anywhere else? Other than that I just feel even keel, not "happy" but relaxed and not worrying and obsessing like I was...maybe a bit disassociated...but I tend to be anyway. I'm not really anymore motivated to do anything, just not sad about it like I usually am.

I have read and re read this thread with great interest and it gives me hope. Thank you! I have suffered with long bouts of depression since my late teens but this last episode has lasted almost 2 years and I am now 39. I have lost all interest in every day things, am getting no pleasure from things that I used to enjoy and feel completely cut off from my normal emotions. Although often anxious, my normal disposition is caring, happy go lucky, funny and very sociable. Since ending an abusive controlling relationship I never want to face a new day and always telling myself I am bad! I have just received the scopoderm patches and am going to go for it and start a first 1.5mg patch this eve, main concern is they won't work unless I get the dose right also am due to see psychiatrist on tues so not sure this is best timing as he needs to know how I have been feeling in order to help me. Am currently not taking any medication have prev tried effexor which worked v well 10 years ago and worked v badly 1 year ago, also mirtazepine, sertraline and lorazepam. Feeling hopeless and so bored of it, only remember what it is like to feel good and a full range of emotions.

I just came across a new article - Google "Army Combats Suicides with Nose Spray". They are using something called TRH (thyrotropin-releasing hormone). Just thought everyone would be interested. Sorry, this is off-topic of scop. I am still searching for something that will help me.

Callie,
There are options other than meds. Research is being done on Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) as we speak. Check it out on "Charlie Rose", channel 13, the brain series. You can draw your own conclusions. Its very interesting!

My apologies also for going off topic, but I have considered the scopolamine and ketamine, ECT, the Vegas Nerve and now DBS. You can not close your mind to any treatment as major depressive disorder is complex, varied and uncured. Anyone who is interested in getting better treatment for major depressive disorder should check out the show I mentioned in my previous post just to further educate themselves. Its very interesting and poses new questions as to the malfunction that is occurring in the brain.

Good luck getting into that clinical trial!

There are SO MANY resctrictions that apply most with major depression will NEVER qualify.

Then if you do by the grace of god, you must have insurance that will pay for experimental brain surgery. I almost fell out of my chair laughing, I never heard of ANY insurance company paying for anything experimental, even if you were dying from cancer, They will never pay for it.

Are they serious?/

Who is the doctor at UCLA that is treating with Ketamine. I have a 43 year old son who has refractory depression and refractory OCD and is currently considering a ketamine study. However, I am nto sure if he should be involved in the study.........if it helps and then he can't be treated with it that is pretty bad.

How did you find out about where to get the ketamine , what dosage and what route? I GREATLY would appreciate the info.

I am getting scopolamine cream from a compounding pharmacy near seattle and they do not know dosages.

Why are you taking the pills for 2 nights a week ? would it not make more sense to take less each day, everyday?

Can you please explain. Thanks

On Ketamine, I went to Dr Nancy Sabjen (who I learmed about on this website) who prescribes a nasal spray of it. Totally affordable and It worked quickly and I feel like a new person. I can't recommend this enough. I have been on anti-D's for years and never got this relief .She worked with her compound pharmacy and had it formulated into a spray!

This message is to David who wrote in last spring about his major relief from TRD by the use Ketamine, first discovered from Clinical Trial. David, you also stated you were obtaining ketamine on your own. I, too was in a clinical trial using Ketamine infusion and my response was incredible! I would like to email you privately to discuss our experience. I will give permission for access to my private email. Please contact me ASAP! Thanks! BTW, tried Riluzole and Scop patches and they did nothing except turn me mean and nasty.
