Carvedilol And Panic Attacks

Updated

I have been on carvedilol 12.5 mg twice a day for about 2 months and am wondering if it might be the cause of what i would describe as mild to major panic attacks as soon as i wake up. They are scary. I am filled with a sense of doom. I am tired but get up ,drink some coffee and toast and start moving. This helps. I am also being treated with wellbutrin for depression (low dose as well as lorazepam. This all scares me and i need help figuring what is triggering these attacks. I recently had a ICD biventricular pace maker put in because of CHF which was diagnosed some 6 months ago. Prior to carvedilol my DR. had me taking metoprolol which gave me nightmares and disturbed sleep. So he switched me to carvedilol. I also high hypothyroidism and take levothyroxine for that. I most always feel very down and think about not wanting to live. No plan for suicide but how can I get relief?

What is happening? Prior to the diagnose of CHF I was depressed. I am 61 and in good health otherwise. No smoking, a good weight, lots of exercise. Supportive family but I feel very alone with figuring this out. Can anyone advise?

Hello, Lila! How are you?

Yes, it could be the Carvedilol, it is known to cause some odd side effects like that in some people that take it. I had a similar problem with it, right when I woke up, as well.

You may want to ask your about trying a different medication. Since you do have CHF, they have to be careful what they prescribe, but there should be a few more you can try.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Thanks for the info. I will talk to my doctor. The only problem is that i have already been on Metoprolol and it caused sleep problems and nightmares. However I will not give up. I have another question however. Once one has a pacemaker in place does that pretty much guarantee that you will feel better, more energy? I do not. Also can I expect my ejection fraction to go up.(do you know what that is)? The pace maker was put in because my ejection fraction could not rise above 30 regardless of 4 months on beta blockers and losartan medications. Thanks for any help you can give. Also I think carvedilol(beta blocker) is increasing the depression I already had before Congestive
Heart failure set in. Somewhere I read that this is called the beta blocker blues. It also makes me somewhat groggy. Anyone else have these symptoms and or info?
Thanks very much

If it's the generic coreg break the pill in half. Half in morning half around 2. Then the second dose at night. This took away all of my Un wanted side effects. Check blood pressure make sure it's not to low.

When mixing this drug with benzodiazepines and medicine for hyperthyroidism the carvedilol has agonist blockers that could block other drugs and or reduce their effects. What you can do is take the carvedilol at night and take the benzodiazepines and other meds in the morning or you can try increasing your dose of lorazepam from say like 1mg to 2mg and see if your anxiety is any better but only increase your benzodiazepine if you are taking your carvedilol at the same time. {edited for privacy}. I'm more than happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have, I have been trying to get some online companies to subcontract out to me so I can help others and everyone can feel safe taking their medications. Thank you for your time. God bless all of you.
