Carvedilol And Ef Numbers

Updated

Hi my husbands is on carvedilol 12.5 twice a day my question is? Why would a doctor prescribe this medicine that lowers bp and then what happens to your ef numbers? While this medicine also slows down your heart or it relaxes it . Then if that is what happens, how can my husband get better. He already has a ef of 20 which is not good at all. What can we benefit from on this pill. Can anyone give me a good advice. We went yeszterday for a echocardiogram and the nurse told us that his heart beats are very low and the contractions of his left ventricle is very weak and wright also. We have been taken coreg for three months. They have changed it three times from 3.125 to 6.25 know 12.5 do we need a higher dosage but i am afraid it will stop his heart completely please ! Someone help.

DEAR BIANCA,
I UNDERSTAND YOUR QUESTION AS I ALSO TAKE THE SAME DRUG (carvedilol) AND WONDER HOW MY EJ FRACTION WILL BE ABLE TO RISE. Mine is at 30 having risen from 11 to 20 to 30 over a period of 4 months due to beta blockers I am told. At first I was put on the beta blocker called Metoprolol and digoxin but eventually got nightmares so my Dr. switched me to carvedilol .He did not make the switch slowly and I developed panic attacks for a while as i got used to the change. I had no idea that would happen. It was horrible. My EF would not go higher so a pace maker was advised and put in this Spring/Summer-it took 2 procedures due to bleeding. The ICD pacemaker is supposed to help get my energy back and protect me from heart attack. Time will tell. pacemaker)) I was told that in some 5 years doctors do see ejection fractions fractions rise if the patient stays on the drugs. I also want you to know that my Dr. wants me to take carvedilol 50 mg twice a day which I am not doing as i am concerned that it may worsen My depression and make me more tired. ASk your husband's doctor if he could go up to 50 twice a day. That is what I am supposed to be at and My doctor is not worried about it stopping my heart. Does any of this help?

hi! thanks for your reply. but i am trying to avoid my husband from getting a pacemaker as of yet. He has only been on carvedidol for 4 months. We as a couple think and have faith that this med will get him out of the risk of having a cardiac arrest, once the ef number goes at least up to a 35 or 40. This is my main concern. i spoke to doctor ask him to give us at least six more month to give time for meds to work. Next visit we will know what exactly needs to be done.

Hi BIanca,Bianca? (sorrry) I was put on metropolol and losartan and eplerenone to help increase my EF factor-I went to the Dr. for some chest pain and was surprised to fine I was pretty sick. the EF was very low at 11 last November, got up to 21 then only 30 by February 2014. I was advised to get a pacemaker and a defibrillator which I had completed June 30 2014. The Pacemaker procedure took 2 tries as i began to bleed. The first 2 wires (leads) were put it March 31st the last one June30th. I still take all the meds described above except I asked my Dr. if I could try something other than Metoprolol as I though it bothered my sleep and dreams . He allowed me to switch to carvedilol. He wants me on 50 a day but I take only 12.5 because I am concerned about the "beta blocker blahs" that can come on. How real are those? Anyone else feel them? (I already have chronic depression that i am being treated for with wellbutrin and lorazepam. The lorazepam makes a difference but it concerns me because it is a benzodiazepine. Perhaps I am not taking enough wellbutrin.) Back to EF. My understanding is that after 4 months of meds if the EF factor has not risen above 30 they recommend a pacemaker/defibrillator to keep you safe. THis is what happened to me. I was also told that people can have higher ef factor numbers,(better) after taking meds for about 5 years. I presently do not feel a lot more energy and do get chest pains that come and go depending on how much I do. However I am protected from a heart attack. My Dr. wants me to remain on disability and apply for SSD which I am going to do. I am also having another echo ultra sound soon to see just where my EF is. I hope some of this helps. I go to the polyclinic in Seattle, and feel that the folks there know their stuff. I pray also. I am 61 and in good health- not a smoker- low alcohol-swimmer etc. I also had a bundle branch block discovered 4 years ago and low thyroid.(I take levothyroxine for that and get blood checked every 3 months) My Dr. has wondered if those played a role in all of this. Hope some of this helps. The hard thing of course if that our physical makeup, genes, age etc. etc are all so different. It is hard to compare isn't it?

My mother (87) has been on Carvederol (sp?) for over a year. Her heart muscle is weak and this drug is supposed to be almost a miracle drug in how it helps the heart pump. She is very tired from it, and does get depressed, but the alternative is a slow but sure death. She is also on Losartin, a high blood pressure medicine. It is important to learn how the heart works and ask your doctor or his nurse how this medication works. Be sure they know ALL if your other medications as well as dosage. My mother had a pacemaker put in so that if she was driving and had a heart attack, it would kick in her heart so she wouldn't have an accident and kill herself or someone else. She does have anxiety, but she has an excellent attitude. She keeps busy with her mind, tries to walk, but does need a nap every day.

Everyone's different. She is 87, but lives with people over 90 and 100. The side effects are bad, but this drug works better at the dose your doctor advises. She takes it in the morning and at night. If she has to do something, she takes it later when she's done.

She did go off the meds for 2 weeks and her energy and heart function decreased rapidly.

See your doctor and call the nurse with questions.
