First of all, I would like to state that an allergic reaction, including a rash, is possible with any drug, that is one of the things that can happen when you are allergic to it.

That said, yes, this is listed under the severe reaction section, meaning you should stop taking it and talk to your doctor immediately.

I have also been taking atenolol for about 7 years. Everything has been going on fine all these years, but suddenly for the last 5-6 months, I am having allergies and hives which itch intensely for some time and then stop. The skin becomes red with small bumps. I have taken medicines for allergy, the effect of which lasts for a few days - and then again the problem starts. I also have a feeling that atenolol could be the cause. I have spoken to my doctor but he insists that the problem could be with some problem with my skin.

I started taking a very low dose of Atenolol 3 days ago. On the second day I began breaking out with hives, very itchy, mostly on the left side of my body. At first I thought it was insect bites but now I wonder of the medication can be the culprit.

I've been on atenolol for a couple of years, but I've developed a cluster of itchy bumps on my chest, just in one area about 4 inches in diameter. Nothing helps (benadryl etc) and now I am wondering about the atenolol?

Atenolol can cause some NASTY side effects after long term use. I used Atenolol for 11 years and suffered from severe itching and acute allergy symptoms at times. I never attributed those symptoms to my Atenolol use... but I have not experienced such symptoms since switching to Norvasc. I am absolutely amazed how clear and strong my breathing has become since stopping Atenolol. It might be time to reevaluate your options. If your medication is switched... you'll still need to take lower doses of Atenolol for several weeks along with your new meds since Atenolol is very addictive... but the new meds will start dominating over the Atenolol quickly and you should see a remarkable improvement within a few days.

I was on atenolol for more than a year and then I developed horrible hives from taking atenolol. They were even on my face and my lips were swollen with larger splothes on my face. The itching was intense.

It will take more than a week for all of the medication to get out of your system when you stop taking the atenolol.

I have only taken 3 doses of atenolol 25mg and began to break out in a itchy rash under the chest and on the legs. I called my doctor and the nurse said it couldn't possibly be the medicine that they have never heard of that kind of side effects before. I took 2 benadryls along with 1 zantac, as both are used for allergic reactions because they both are histamine blockers. The rash went away but came back around the time the Benadryl wore off. I also had a sore throat as well. When I told the nurse I had found others on the internet who had this she interrupted me with "no, no, no", like I am a child. I will not continue this medicine because evidently MY BODY, as an individual and not a consensus, doesn't like this crap. BTW, I was taking this because I have Dysautonomia and I have too much adrenaline.

Same issue, it was causing me itching, tongue swelling and throat swelling. The benadryl helped me, but each time after I took the atenolol, i had the issues come about again after about 2 hours. It also made me super drowsy and literally forcing my eyelids shut. The eyelids, lips, tongue and throat all had swelling. Only on for 3 days.

Hi, I was started on atenolol about Dec 2014 approx 10 months from that date (Oct 2015) I started getting what I thought were intensely itchy bug bites/hives. Now April 2016 I've gone through my house cleaning, bagging every mattress and pillow in bedbug/dust mite covers, washing the dog til he hates me, putting out bedbug traps (nothing ever caught) taking benedryl and spending a fortune on anti itch meds, showering twice a day in case of chiggers and being the only one in my house dealing with this. I finally realized that what I'm taking, namely, atenolol may be the culprit. I've got an appt with my internist who put me on this medication for AFIB, so I'll be demanding he switch me to something else. Has anyone had better luck with another drug for atrial fibrillation?

I had a severe rash and uncontrollable itching when I started Atenolol....but it was into the second month before I started reacting to it. I was taken off it and not put on anything else for a couple of weeks. It was the drug because it never happened again.

I have had severe itchiness in my head forehead and back of my neck. I have been to many doctors including dermatologist. No clear diagnosis. I decided to stop atenolol. I only take it for PVC'S. I had read this may be a side effect. For 2 days I have minimal itchy. I really hope this is the end to this very annoying problem.

I've been taking Atenolol for about 10 years, 100 mg, 1 x day with no problems. Upon a refill Mail order pharmacy switched me to 2 x day of 50 mg, with my doctors approval. I don't feel these are as effective. Feels like I'm not on any blood pressure medication. Is this possible? Anyone else have this experience?

I am going thru the same thing. Cardiologist said it can't be the meds you been on it for a few months. He said it would have happened right away but I don't believe him. Told him o just want off of it since made reflux worse but he said it couldn't have. It's the only new med i take.

I've been on Atenolol for 5 years. I never did care for it because it seemed to make me drowsy during the day, but unable to sleep at night. Anyway, for about the last 6 months I have had this intense itching and outbreak of spots. In addition, I only take 5 mg Amlodipine and low dose aspirin, for my BP.
Saw MD. today. Insisted it cannot be the Atenolol, "it's just a part of aging," and I have to "live with it." Why is it that the doctors ALWAYS tell you it isn't the medicine and make you feel that you are weird for having these reactions?

I was on atenolol for about 6 months then I started getting this intense crawling itchy sensation mostly on limbs. I could see no rash at first but would itch so much I would bleed. At night it was worse , then it started lasting all day. I used calamine lotion. I would welt up everywhere I scratched. I cleaned my whole house. Still itchy.
I took Allegra and that finally helped but if I missed it even one day I would scratch my skin off. Finally after a year and a half I asked my dr to switch me to something else and 1 week later I stopped taking my allergy Med . Guess what no more itching!!! I can't believe I dealt with that severe itching for over a year. I still have some scars on my legs.

Yes, I am also on atenolol for HBP. This is my second breakout of hives also on atenolol. Atenolol is very effective for controlling my blood pressure. Unfortunately I am allergic to it. Cetirizine, levocetirizine and prednisolone don't seem to help.

Can anyone suggest an effective histamine blocker? Thanks.

I've taken it for thirty days and have this overall body itching, but with no rash, that just started a week ago. I take it at 3:00 pm; the itching starts within 2 hrs after taking it, and last until about 3:00 or 4:00 in the middle of the night.

My doctor just put me on Atenolol also for AFIB. I don't know why, but he prescribed a really high dose of 50 mg. He knows that I have COPD (severe emphysema), so I was scared to take such a strong dosage. So I quartered the pills making them about 12 mg. each. I just took the first one 2 hours ago, and now I have a ringing in my ears and am itchy all over. Feels like I walked into a fiberglass net. The itching so far is mostly on my face, neck and head. It feels like a million little bugs biting me. I will not be taking another dose of this at any strength.
