Sudden Withdrawal From Neurontin (Page 14) (Top voted first)

Updated

I have been taking 600 mg of Neurontin 4x a day for about 2 years and recentlty ran out of this medication due to excrutiating slow service from mandatory mail order RX company.... I was extremely agitated during this time (approx. 5 days), nervous, stressed out, etc. Has anyone else had these symptons as a result of sudden withdrawal from Neurontin? I can't understand why this happened, I felt so scared and lousy for that time. Is this a known reaction for this med? I haven't been able to find an answer. I take it for relief from carpel tunnel syndrom. Thanks

You can die. I have had four migraines in 24 hours with vomiting. Three to four days of that. Can get seizures. Didn't know. Don't do it!!!

Hi! Have you ever consider acupuncture? When my back was not so bad I did acupuncture and it was great!!! You MUST find a GREAT acupuncturist. That is important. See if you can find an Asian Doctor that has been trained in this and also practices eastern medicine. That doctor should also know when you need to be treated with western medicine. Acupuncture and eastern herbal medicines helped me avoid a hysterectomy. The problem went away totally. If you lived in NJ I could recommend a great dr.

I have been forced more than a few times to go cold turkey off gabapentin for a couple weeks or so. Each time is a living ****ing nightmare. I have chest pain like I'm going to have a heart attack and extreme sweats, anxiety, ect... I even have interdose withdrawals in between doses some days. 600mg 3* a day for going on 2 yrs now. It took me a few months to figure out what was going on with me. I like the way it makes me feel, calm, energetic at the same time, social anxiety lessons, and it gives me a warm, numb feeling, faintly, not like a high by any means. Just comforting is the best way to describe the way it affects me. I hate how I feel if I don't take it and what happens if I lose my insurance?! Do you know how expensive gabapentin is out of pocket? It's one of the more expensive medications out there, costing waaayyyy more than my Clonazapam or MMT. It is a great med, but coming off it scares me. I only take it as prescribed so I don't run out. Cold turkey neurontin withdrawal is dangerous and comparable to alcohol WD's or Xanax withdrawals. Unbelievably true, for most people. Stay on it or taper off it, but NEVER abruptly just stop taking it! Good evening.

Sorry to hear that. I too stopped cold turkey. I have experienced the same three weeks today anxiety a tad better but I am still not myself. I took it 4 days and pain was reduced by 80 percent. Still better with the pain but now have mild headache, sleep interruption, feel like i am crawling inside my body, anxiety and worry, burning around my heart, light headed, general malaise. I too did epsom bath and magnesium and b vitamins. I also read that biotin may help... Drink a lot of water, dry skin, brushing before baths. Pray...It will pass. I am still in it but pray every day it will be done. I was called a hypochondriate by my acupuncturist!

Yes, it did subside, thank you. I was however looking for info specific to Neurontin, why it would cause this specific reaction; how it works, etc... I am handicapped, on several (too many!) prescription meds, but have never had a reaction like this from sudden withdrawal and I realized I did not really know very much about Neurontin despite reading info provided from pharmacy when dispensing prescription. I did talk to my Dr. at the time but he did not have this specific info.

i have been on gabapentin 300mg, 4 a day. i ended up in hospital, as my blood pressure crashed to 70 over 33. my salt level had depleted drastically and i was put on an i.v drip. my nose bled so much and my eyes, ears and sinuses became infected and i was continuously nauseous and had stomach cramps. i have just decided to stop taking it and have been off it for just over a week. i think i would rather put up with not being able to sleep properly than be like i was. have others had same symptoms

My Dr prescribed gabapentin for me following a neck injury 9 mos ago. I took 300mg 2x/day. Ran out 4 days ago & decided not to refill my script. I've been feeling edgy & extremely fatigued since I stopped taking the gaba. Any idea how long this lethargy will last?

I went cold turkey from the highest possible dose for almost 3 years. Was the worst 4 to 6 weeks of my life. But I'm so glad I went off the HORRIBLE drug!! Yes the nerve pain, tingling and pins and needle sensations are back but I will cope with them better than what the gabapentin was doing to me. I actually have more energy and I'm no longer in a CONSTANTLY fog that I had with the gabapentin. Best of luck to ALL of you trying to learn about this med and going off it. The doctors just prescribe it but I honestly don't think thru realize all that it does to a person who is on it for extended periods of time or on high doses. One dr did mention stopping cold turkey is VERY DANGEROUS and can cause some serious problems. Fortunately I didn't have many serious problems. Just felt horrible. Someone said my withdrawal symptoms were pretty comparable to stopping H. So be careful stopping cold turkey especially if your on a high dose. DEFINITELY discuss the best way to stop it with your dr or pharmacist if you're having any tough withdrawal symptoms. Good luck to any and all that take this medication. The side effects are worse than the original problems. An old saying the cure is worse than the disease! !

I took one pill of Neurontin and I could hardly breathe, was extremely dizzy and then fell. They use this medicine for many things. It was designed for epileptics but they now use it as an anti-depressant, etc. You are experiencing withdraw symptoms which will subside if you don't take it anymore. Lots of luck.

Seizures are not part of withdrawal unless you have epilepsy. My daughter was prescribed this med for hypertonic muscle tone. She had cerebral palsy with muscle spasms and she also had epilepsy. I currently take this med for fibromyalgia, anxiety and neuropathy. Don't believe everything u read unless u fully understand it.

I am also going through Neurontin withdrawals. I was on it for 7 months for RSD pain caused from a fall through a window. I weaned myself off (though maybe not as slow as I should have) over the course of a week. I was on 1, 800 mg per day. It has been five days and I have terrible stomach cramps and pain, nervousness, cannot sleep, and am extremely tired. I can't seem to find any information on how long these withdrawal symptoms should last? Any info is appreciated. And is what I am experiencing normal?

Why would you be surprised withdrawal from an anti-seizure medication includes the possibility of seizures? No one should have to tell you that.
