Metronidazole Lasting Side Effects (Page 15)

Updated

I have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...

let me start off by saying thanks for all the post that everyone is sharing.

ill keep this short but I doubt it will be for the full understanding. I have H pylori. I had to diagnose myself before I found a doctor willing to test for it. after a handful of specialist that said I had an ulcer because of my age, I began to hate these i****s. the one doctor that was willing to test me for h pylori, gave me some triple meds. metronidazole, amoxicillin, clarithromycin, and a proton pump inhibitor of my choice was used to cure me.

taking these twice a day I began felling good after two days. on the third day I began feeling itchiness around the rectum. i thought i had pin worms. but i couldn't bare it anymore so i took an over the counter med to cure it. i did try to look for them which is to use a tape and press on the rectum in the morning. i found nothing. after thinking about it, i think the meds i was using caused an allergic reaction. but

i did try taking the meds again after a month had gone by.

so trying it again (second run at this med process), on the 5th day i felt really sick. I did it for a fourth day but I couldn't take it anymore. I was getting chills and felt sick. i just had to stop. i actually thought i was going to die.

i knew that the meds that help but the side effects are huge.

i decided that the risk was worth it but they all say that we need to use it long enough to kill the bacteria. and the last time i tried it, i did notice a difference. so here goes. before i go into it again i need to fix something.

facts:
-the meds do actually work.
-side effects are super aggressive.
-each person is different in biology.
-meds are prescribed as a general and not to catered to each person individually. i was actually told this by my doctor because she showed me a general hand book. she is really up front. they use a book to use as a guide. nothing more. that's why they sometimes disappear from the room and come back with a diagnosis and a prescription. they don't and really cant know every symptom in the world.
-i personally am very sensitive to meds. why?? cause i don't drink alcohol, im not over weight, i don't smoke, i do exercise, and eat my veggies. so if your somewhat healthy your technically screwed.

luckly i am smart, i can fix things and figure out problems.

i intereviewed over the phone with pharmacist and doctors along with reading up more information from various places, i figured out more about the meds and the bacteria. which is going to help me fix me.

to test out a theory i have i needed to wait a good amount of time to have all the past meds get out of the body. everyone is different but one thing i am sure, is that you need to flush out the meds by waiting it out. you will know its out when you feel the same way as you were before your med intake and only the bacteria symptoms are left.

once i felt the same as before i then decided to try this new method. i did not have enough left over meds to complete it but what choice did i have.

what i did was change out the med times and amount. for me personally i figured out that metronidazole is the one i needed to continue on with. nothing else. just that and reduce the amount of times during the day. i took one a day with a full meal and stayed full the whole day with multiple meals. i only had 6 pills left so if was to work it had to happen within 6 days. on the second day i felt a little better. still a little pain from the med but i had energy. i decided to go to the gym and work out. i had energy and it seemed to be working but as i neared the 6th day i knew i wasn't cured yet and i had run out.

with out the extra pills i needed to last the two weeks the bacteria came back.

since this is so long now ill stop.

what you all need to know is that everyone is different. feeling sick is going to happen, bloating is going to happen, and no one is the same. the cure is here but you need to know how to use it. your doctor doesn't know you that well. he can only see what is happening afterwards. your body is telling you something and only you can figure it out.

I have had some serious side effects - horrific unsteadines, massive headaches, constipation, dizziness and just a feeling of feeling unwell. It has been over 7 weeks and I am still experiencing very bad headaches.

Do you know the exact medication you were taking? some on here were on one and some were given more than one med. I had a reaction to Levaquin - but many on this site were on a combination which is why this site came up when I was looking up side effects. Would you let us know if you only took one med. or more. Are you sleeping, any nausea, crying, feeling depersonalized?
I am so so sorry that you, too are having side effects. The FDA stays ignorant and clueless to all of us suffering from these drug side effects. What have you tried so far to get through this?

Sidrah- THIS IS VERY LONG. I AM SO SORRY. I WORRY. I have not been on this site in quite a while. I am not sure who you are writing to but want to encourage you to hang in there-PLEASE-I thought 100% I was going to die. There was no way, in my mind, that anyone could live through this pain and agony. I wanted to die-to be honest. I could not stand the pain, headaches, nerve pain, insomnia, vision issues, and SO MUCH MORE. The first year was HELL to say the least. I know so many that have taken there lives due to the pain and mental side effects from these meds. The horrifying part is that NO ONE KNOWS if they will be the one that gets better or not. I know of people that were the same as myself and after a couple years were 100% better. That is NOT me-but I know many. As you and all know-We all react different to meds.-YES-There are meds. that are so dangerous to some they should not be on the market--this in my opinion is one of them. I could care less that some are fine with these meds--the point is that the people that are NOT fine live in such horror-like yourself--there is no way POSSIBLE for others to understand the pain you are in....only those of use that have gone or going through it understand. PLEASE--do what you can to get through this as you do not know if you will be fine in the end. It attacks at a cellular level and you are too early to tell. YES-It is hard to hear me say-hang on--I remember it well. The pain is far too much--it is not back pain like many on drugs, or disease pain, this is PAIN in EVERY PART OF THE BODY--it is invaders for sure---I know your pain--I DO! What are you doing for the pain? Are you taking magnesium, absorbic C, alkaline to reduce acid in the system, things like this--I was NOT able to get these items on my own--I needed help 24/7. I was not able to walk, open eyes, or have any noise around me. My family can tell the horror stories. The hallucinations from no sleep from the zapping pain in my body and brain. I am guessing that much of what I write you relate to....

HANG ON....The hell of doing so is the only way you will know how your body will heal. You will not get better fast like you need to...I wish I could say you would. Do not listen to those that tell you they were fine on this medication--they cannot relate to you at all. Good for them. The slight side effects I read from some are minor in comparison to what you are going through. Are you able to walk and/or shower? I was not but not sure about you. This will be the battle of your life--probably like not other--I have taken care of family passing from cancer and disease before my reaction and I am NOT taking away from my grandpa's pain or grandmother's disease--but what I can say is that they were in pain for a very short time and the meds. for pain helped a bit and then they passed. The suffering was awful to watch but when they passed over--I knew the pain was done. Then-when I was hit--I could not move at all--if I even moved OMG--the pain=and I was only 42 when this hit. I thought I knew of pain and death by caring for family and friends--I knew NOTHING until this. SO I DO RELATE TO YOU--I can say that much of this pain WILL PASS but it takes a long time and a lot of proper care...that is the hardest part. TO eat at all is hard. I was put in the hospital for FAILURE TO THRIVE-an infant syndrome--but IT APPLIED TO ME. I went from active my whole life, exercising 4-6xs a week, hiking, running, walking, swimming, I could not remember a time in my adult life that I did not know what I was putting in my mouth and how I cared for my body--so do NOT BLAME YOURSELF. I know more healthy people that were hit than not-- again--I am sorry you are suffering so so much. It is unreal pain. I cannot promise how you will be but I can promise that if you do not suffer through this to see your outcome--your family will have great pain and loss that you have a chance of preventing as you might come through this--after much suffering-- PLEASE HANG ON. PLEASE... YOU CAN DO THIS!

I was on flagyl along with doxycycline with an infection in my abdomen after major abdomenal surgery. I was on 500 mgs. four times a day from June 12 to June 30. I had severe dizziness and imbalance, anxiety, irritability and depression as well as sleep problems. I am still experiencing some anxiety (extreme worry and blow things out of proportion) and mild depression. I also get bouts of mild nausea which only last a minute or so. Don't know if this is caused by the doxycycline which is very hard on the stomach. Also, I have a hiatal hernia which is very irritated. My biggest fear is ever taking this drug again. Hopefully, all the symptoms will eventually go. The pharmacist tells me they can last for months. Just the past two days I was able to have a sip of wine with dinner. When I tried about six weeks after stopping the flagyl I almost passed out and felt very nauseated.

hi all sorry i have not posted for a while its now been 2 years for me since i came off the toxic metronidazole poison, as some of you may already know i went to hell with this drug and never really came back, the burning has eased a little, weakness still the same, panic attacks the same, tingling better ,still feel like im going of my legs so heavy and hard to walk i think im going to have to put up with being like this now for life :-( god helps us all!!

It's been over 2 years for me too and I have a lot of the same symptoms you have had with it. I too think of it as poison which if only I had known the risk I would never had ingested. Feel like a victim more than a patient when it comes to metronidazole. My legs often have these awful feelings in them and my feet burn. I have electric shock type feelings sometimes in a certain part of my body usually leg, foot or fingers. When I feel anxiety coming on I feel dizzy and not in control of my body. Hard to explain. Unsteady I suppose. I still lose my balance and can fall if I'm not careful, not as bad but it reminds me that I'm not the same. I haven't given up hope that I will continue to improve, however when the symptoms come back without warning it does tend to discourage me. God has been my strength and continues to be. Why that drug is still being used so readily I don't understand. It seems evil to the unsuspecting patients that it so negatively affects. Compassion needs to be put ahead of the almighty dollar. There is no place for greed in medicine, but unfortunately it is an industry where there is.

Same thing happened to me. I was given Flagyl, along with Bactrim, a week ago to treat recurrent diverticulitis. A few days ago I developed severe dizziness, sleepiness, difficulty walking with unsteadiness and imbalance, mental confusion, etc. It is extremely unsettling! And depressing. I worry I have a brain tumor or something but I am reasonably sure it is from the medication as it was only like this after I started taking it. I took Flagyl a long time ago but don't recall it causing these same symptoms. Maybe it is adulterated with something in the manufacturing? I am hoping the symptoms regress when I stop taking this in 3 days.

I have taken metronidazole for 7 days and I'm so happy I'm off it now, ever since i started taking it I've had severe migraines and feel like throwing up sometimes, I'm also tired all the time, I'm hoping it goes away, I had really bad side effects of another antibacterial and those went away a few days after I stopped it

Cyrill-glad to hear from you and how you are...I am, also, the same. Pushing through each day, doing what I can like you, hating waking up in so much pain, but know if I get up it is less that to lie there...that is always weird. I find the longer I lie down, the more pain comes in my legs yet the longer I am up on my feet--the pain comes as well--two evils for sure. So glad to hear you are going to the mall, and dating. Keep going. The body does not replenish all of its cells until every 7 yrs--approx--drs. have told me this more than once. Will this do any good--not sure. But interesting. I am reading on someone that was given vit. c IVs and was able to improve some of his symptoms. I did this for two years and did not work for me but sounds like it does for some. Stay strong-keep goind--but rest when you must---fatigue goes hand in hand with this. I am just glad you are with us. I was worried. So happy you are fighting this.......Mel

I just found this site, thank the gods! I was given Metronizadole and another antibiotic on Aug. 25 for a bacterial infection. 4 days later the awful weak spells started with tingling arms, chest tightness, and pounding heart. They gradually went away until my obgyn gave me a vaginal cream of Metronizadole for a vaginal infection last week. After day 4 of the cream, the awful stuff started again. It's now day 3 of being off the Metronizadole. My obgyn absolutely agrees that my symptoms are a reaction to this awful drug. I've been to the ER twice thinking I was having a heart attack, but both time, they could find absolutely nothing wrong with me. I went to a cardiologist who could find nothing wrong with my heart. Reading all these posts both scares and me and gives me hope. At least I know I'm not alone, but I'm now scared that these symptoms will persist. I'm supposed to leave the country in just a few days for a vacation, then see my lover in Vermont. I'm terrified that I'm going to feel awful on my trip and my parents want me to just cancel it, but I'm really hoping I can feel well enough to make it. I've been fighting through this to do normal things (I'm normally very active and run a business) the last few days, so I'm hoping I can make the trip, but I'm scared like all of you, and keep wondering if this will kill me, and how long it will last. I'm on probiotics and have no digestive problems at all, but the heart pounding, chest tightness, and arm tingling are terrifying. Anything you've done to help yourselves I am interested in!!!

DANA- I do not get back to this page often. Illness prevents me from being up to date on things. I read that you took the Metron. and an antibiotic--was the antibiotic Cipro, Levaquin, or Avelox--if so--I feel that you are probably having a reaction to that....My reaction was to Levaquin in 2009. Nothing shows up in diagnostics but the pain, weakness, joint pain, tendons, muscle twitching, insomnia. and the list goes on.....Try to see which medication your side effects truly align with....many cross over a bit and then people think that an antibiotic cannot be the cause. If it is Cipro, Avelox or Levaquin--these are initially Chemo meds later used and anitbiotics. They have a long list of side effects and Drs. do not listen although it is making a lot of gain in the last few years. Research centers have been analyzing people in a controlled study. It is world-wide and with Levaquin approved in 1996--after Cipro was used for the Gulf war--thus the Gulf War Syndrome--the number of people effected rapidly climbed.

As I have reported in the last couple of months, I was on Flagyl for 19 days, 250 mgs. four times a day due to an abdominal infection after surgery. At the same time I was on doxycycline for 14 days. Had all the anxiety, dizziness, irritability and sleeplessness and imbalance. Could not walk unless I held on to my husband. After being off it for three weeks I took two small sips of my son's wine and almost passed out and became very nauseated. Six weeks after that episode I tried having some wine again, just little by little and have not had any of the same symptoms. However, once I started having a glass of wine on weekends with dinner I began to have these same neurological symptoms described by so many of you. These weird
shock like feelings in my legs, feet, arms and even my back. Some days it's worse than others and I have gone for a week without them and then they return. They do seem to be worse when I'm under stress. I stopped the Flagyl on June 30 and today is October 18. Yesterday was one of my worst days. I think I may have some kind of nerve damage. We have a very knowledgeable pharmacist who is very experienced. He warmed me about how bad this drug is so I'm gong to talk to him about what I'm experiencing. Unfortunately, this was the only drug that would eliminate the type of bacteria I had. I'll report what he says.

The flare ups you report are, as you said, what most go through. It is the craziest thing. It can come on at any time. Alcohol is the same--but I have never had it improve. I even try a wine cooler and same thing happens. Seems to be something with the brain. Have you had an MRI yet? My MRI showed white matter--no MS--damage from meds. It was not there when side effects first started. The white matter appeared about a year later. All other tests are always fine but I have Periph. Neuropathy--which is what you speak of...My Dr. and pharmacist had me report to MedWatch. Would like to know if you get told the same thing...

I was on Levaquin in September between the two doses of Metronidazole. I've now been to the ER a FOURTH time for heart attack symptoms, but this time, they reassured me that my heart and lungs are absolutely fine. I have an appointment to see a neurologist in a few days and hope to find some answers there. The ER doctor was thinking maybe acid reflux, so now I have an appointment with a GI person as well. Today my symptoms are much more mild than they've been in the past two weeks. The heart pounding seems to be gradually getting better over the past few days, but I still have chest pains, very stiff neck, and the PN in my arms and hands. I also have a tremor in my right hand which doesn't seem to want to go away. I had to cancel my great trip as I was really feeling horrible the night before I was to leave and am really feeling horrible about that, too. I have found that taking magnesium before bed helps, as does eating carbs. My weight has dropped and for the very first time in my life, I am happy when the scale goes UP!
