Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 10)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

Yes it has been 1.5 months that i have been off this drug. Horrible 2.5 months of withdrawal. Unfortunately the drug the Dr. gave me to keep calm was Lorazepam. It did help when getting off Metoprolol but now i am addicted unknowingly to Lorazepam....and it is even worse and they say it will take me 6 months to wean off of it.
I know why i didnt see a Dr. for 25 years before my high BP emergency. If i had know any of this i would have done it all natural with food and exercise.

I am convinced after all my research that the drug companies feed the Dr.s CRAP and the Dr's get amnesia because they get paid and don't have to think.

My dr. tried to tell me it was all in my head about all the drugs i had taken for BP making me a zombie. Even my Pharmacist said his wife had a terrible reaction to one of the drugs i was on. My Dr. rolled his eyes at me.

Now he thinks i have a minor dependency and easy to get off. But he has not personally experienced it. I am very angry and the medical profession ....i thought they were better than this.

These drugs are horrible and there is no way the drug companies don't have any idea about this stuff...there are way too many of us. And many of the symptoms people get from these drugs the Dr's say you have a new disease without even considering the debilitating side effects of the drugs they just came off.
One guy who they took off Xanax was fine one week but when the side effects kicked in they said he had developed split personality and put him in a mental ward on all kind of new powerful drugs. When they gave him another Xanax he was right as rain almost within an hour but since he was diagnosed with a new disorder..thats what is now is...poor guy! How many poor guys/gals there are out there...i venture to say millions.

Metopropol gave me horrible anxiety and the worst palpitations i ever have had by far. Sometimes i would take a handful of aspirin because i thought i was dying. Then when done with the drug...two weeks later another bout with them and they continue on a lesser basis 1.5 months out. I had people write me and said 6 months out Metoprolol was still giving them trouble.

Now i find out they are a side effect of Lorazepam as well. They are a different kind of palpitation though..not near as heavy as Metoprolol.

COQ-10 WORKS GOOD FOR PALPITATIONS AND SIDE EFFECTS OF mETOPROLOL Take 200 mg a day of Ubiquinol...it works much better than normal coq10.

Good luck all! Sorry for your troubles.
I have 2 family members who are on it and have no issues but one person can eat a Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich and feel good and the one who has a peanut allergy can swell up and die! Don't ever let anyone tell you your symptoms are not real. The major thing i found out is most people have NO idea what any of us are going through and because it doesn't fit with their belief system they will try to make you wrong and crazy. Do what is right for you and make sure you get information from people who have gone through this!

I AGREE with you! DON'T LET ANYONE TELL YOU YOUR SYMPTOMS ARE NOT REAL! Don't give up! You are the only one who knows what you feel and doctor's are limited by what they learned in medical school years ago and do not know how to think outside the box! If they haven't picked up a recent medical journal report and read about it, or didn't hear about it at a medical conference then it does not exist. It took YEARS for the medical field to start taking the very real issue of heart attacks in women seriously, a growing cause of death here in the U.S. Doctor's are mere mortals who only THINK they know it all. My message to everyone out there who is scared, frustrated and angry: Don't give up! Find a doctor who will LISTEN to you and adress all your complaints and do all the necessary tests to get to the bottom of what is going on.

3 weeks off the meds, things continue to get better. SOB 90% gone and when I do, the spells don't last as long. Less fatigue, more stamina, and less anxiety. Scary chest pains gotten less scary when my body goes onto an anxious state.

New symptoms I notice (prolly had them before but so sick with other stuff I didn't notice): I get mild palpitations when I eat badly, like fried foods. I feel yucky when I eat sweets (donut, cookies) on empty stomache.

For rehab, start of August started excersize at a heart wellness center 2x a week and I feel like its really helped. Specifically 30 min on the elliptical working slightly above my comfort level. Also getting a Swedish like massage weekly, not sure if this helps but my hope is to get the toxins out of my system faster, AS WELL AS getting my body adjusted at a relaxation state because I get more palps when my body transitions to restful state.

A physiologist tried to explain to me about palps: something about my bp wanting to lower, and since I'm still young (forties vs sixties) my body reacts quicker, but metoprolol has enlarged (or smaller?) my arteries, so the heart compensates and that's when I feel the palps. Can someone explain this better?

BTW, I did get depression like I've never experienced before while on this drug. At times I felt like my brain was thinking on its own and making me feel hopeless about life, while my rational side was battling those thought because I knew I was physically getting better. It was exhausting and was equally scary as the syncope. I bring this up because of the passing of Robin Williams. And I strongly encourage anyone getting to that point with any drug, get medical help as soon as you can!!! If I could do-over, I should have proactively complain about the intial physical side effects before it affected my brain physically. My girlfriend is on metoprolol and is doing very well on it, so unless you complain doctors will think you are fine. At this stage for me, much of depression is gone. ??

Frustrated in Oregon, I take Metoprolol to help regulate the beat in an upper chamber of my heart. Works great and the only time it hasn't is If the pharmacy starts switching brands around on me. You mentioned the confused and flustered state, that's how I know when I missed my pill LOL

I TOOK FOR ABOUT A MONTH! My Dr. had my stop "COLD TURKEY" totally after bad reaction with other med. ITS TAKEN ABOUT A MONTH TO GET OVERIT!!! I still feel like im not right in the head. Anxiety, vision focusing, chest pains, palpitations, dizzy, muscle spasms all over. Some days are worse than others. When I think I'm getting better, then another bad day comes. I CANNOT WAIT TO BE BACK NORMAL. I hope this is not a permanent problem. Anxiety has never been a problem for me before. I'm a veteran that used to fire weapons and all that good stuff. Now there are times I cant handle everyday situations. I had to get up and leave the room from WATCHING A MOVIE! I'm even thinking of smoking cannabis to help calm myself, or just sleep a good nights sleep. Alcohol seems to make me feel worse, so cant do that either. I feel sorry for everyone here. We all have the same problem. I'm on week 3 now. Better than week one, but got a ways to go...

Im taking metoprolol for 3 weeks and never thought the withdrawal effects would be this bad. Before taking metoprolol i was on bisoprolol for one week but i couldnt tolerate the side effect so Dr switch me to metoprolol. Since taking this meds my life not normal anymore. My BP is normal b4 taking this meds. Im on this med to control my heart rate. After met doctor last 2 weeks, she told me to stop metoprolol since my ECG seems ok. She prescribed me another beta blocker which is propranolol but only to be taken when needed. I have bad experiences with beta blocker before so i limit myself from taking propranolol. (already take it 2 times due to palp n rapid heart rate that cause me panic). Now after 2 weeks off metoprolol, i stillhave the side effects that really affects my life n work. I hope the effects will gone soon and i can feel normal back..
