Levothyroxine Side Effects (Page 9)

Updated

I was recently diagnosed with an underactive thyroid. I have been taking levothyroxine for almost two weeks. For the last four or five days I have had a weird feeling. It is hard to explain. I don't really feel dizzy but I get a strange feeling in my head. I guess you would describe it as a head rush. Has anyone else had this feeling and will it go away as my body adjusts to the levothyroxine?

Ciara, sounds like you're allergic to something in the tablet. All tablets have 'fillers'. You're more likely to be allergic to the 'filler' than the thyroxine because it is a natural substance your body has anyway. You really need to get back to your doctor and tell him. If he doesn't listen try the pharmacist for help or change your doctor.

When taking levothyroxine I was told by my family doctor not to take prilosec that I have been taking for several years to battle acid problems, because levo 'takes care' of the acid problem. Almost immediately my acid problem resurfaced with a bang ! What's the scoop on levo and prilosec. I am back on prilosec and all is fine. Am I now not getting the benefit from levothyroxine?

Hi PJ, i have tried both liquid and tablet form of this drug and always the same. I am not on anyother medication for it to react with. I have been to the allergy clinic but all they done was give me more to make me react again not find the root cause of the problem. T3 is not working for me and not have not idea of any alternative meds i can take. Have you heard of any??

Some doctors will prescribe Armour Thyroid pills. They are made from pig thyroid and don't cause as many side affects.

I first had hyper and then treatment for it (symptoms--terrible!--rapid heartbead, tired (accomplished things because I would tell myself that I had to), insomnia, thoughts too fast and were gone before I could get a sentence out, tooth and gum problems.) After treatment, I had hypo(terrible cramps even in my face, terrible gas pains, hair falling out, no imsomnia!) I am saying all this to say that any type of thyroid problem is no fun! If you haven't had it, you don't understand it, doctor or no doctor. Mine was controlled for years with no problem. Then, my doctor and good friend moved. New doctor kept upping my levothroxine. A silent heart attack later, the medication has been cut. Twenty years ago there was a thyroid Association to which I belonged. Take care, find out, keep a diary, talk to those who have a problem--do anything to control it because it affects practically everything in your body.

Hi Ciara, It sounds crazy but you could try and contact the drug company on the information sheet in your tablet box and ask them for help. I'm still plodding on but can't get past the 50mcg without a racing heart which makes me faint so I'm probably not the best to give advice. I'm sticking with the 50mcg and will probably try homeopathy at some point too just to support my whole system rather than as a substitute.

That is not good at all. That sounds like an allergic reaction to me. I have been on the meds for 12 years, and i hate them, but i have to take it becuase i had an underactive thyroid, but it is now overactive.

I started taking levothyroxin 2 weeks back (25 mg) for hypothyroidism and I hate it. My throid level is 3.77 and my doctor wants it to increase. I am 46 years old and female. It makes me feel dizzy, its almost like a head rush. I am perpetually hungry and if I dont eat something every few hours I feel like a vaccuum has been turned on inside my stomach. I feel weird sigh

I think they need to come up with a different medicine. This one is not good for anyone with all the side affects. My doctor wants me to go on it again, but I am so scared of the way it made me feel last time that I cannot swallow one pill.

Diagnosed hypo with multi nodular goiter 1973-eventually shut thyroid down, so no function at all. Have taken natural and synthetic-natural was difficult to control, generics work for some, I found taking the same brand consistently works best(the pharmacies will switch brands and when they do you have re-regulate) needing bloodwk every six months until at desired levels. It takes time-I have a hard time with either extreme cold or hot weather, which is a side effect, some hair loss after med changes which for me grows back, don't take Synthroid with coffee or I get palpitations could be caffeine related, try to take meds same time of day-I take mine late afternoon(I know they say first thing in AM, but I need coffee-LOL), no antacids or calcium with med as it affects absorption. Have experienced, fatigue, wt gain, wt loss, dizzyness, ht palpitations, body aches. hair loss, brain fog, internal tremors, lizard skin-I guess patience and going back for rechecks, finding a med that works for you is the key. Take care and best of luck to everyone going thru this.

I am a 41 year old female with extremely mild hypothryroid and am on 25 mcg and feel extremely foggy. It's to the point that it's hard to make decisions and hold a conversation without feeling kind of drunk or heavy headed. I too am more edgy and aggravated, but I'm not sure if it's because I feel so abnormal that it's making me edgy or mad that I just want to feel normal and be able to function. The dizziness even makes me feel a little bit nauseous like I have car sickness or came off a ride. Being that I am only mildly hypo, I am seeing my DR to see if this is really necessary. I can't be on this med and have this feeling for life. I am so glad I found this site as when I called my DR they made me feel crazy when I told them I was feeling so dizzy and foggy that I was going to stop taking the med. They told me they never heard Levo causing this and that is was probably unrelated. Thanks for all your input!

Too bad doctors don't check out the internet more often. Just like with levothyroxine, other things are posted that have an abundance of information. How can they say they never heard of side effects when all these people post them? However, my doctor doesn't listen either, so guess they wouldn't bother reading these anyway...

I suggested to my Dr that maybe he should do a bit of research and he seemed to think I was insane so I simply suggested that if it was all in my head I wanted a psychiatric referral. After a long pause he relented and agreed to treat 'me' and not the damned results on the screen. No, I haven;t found the answer. Yes, I still have some side effects including all that's been mentioned but because I now am free to take it as suits me they are more in control. Basically, if the side effects are bad I miss a few doses and then take a low dose alternate days and slowly increase every few weeks until I get back to where I was. This way I've crept up to 50mcgs most days over about 6 months. (apparently I'm aiming for 100mcgs before my next blood test... figure it'll take a year or so if ever).

I have been on levothyroxine for over a year or more and then started to get the shakes, sweating, crying, racing thoughts. I told my doctor and she says oh its anxiety, you need a psychiatrist. I stopped the pill and after a few weeks all my symptoms stopped and I did go to a psychiatrist and she said nothing wrong with me, it was side effects from the medicine, doctor said start it again, I did and they all came back and I stopped for good because I cannot live like that. Have to try and find a new pill. You will be fine, talk to your doctor and tell him/her how you feel. Take care and keep in touch if you want.
