Has Anyone Been On Opana?

Updated

My dr is giving me the choice to try Opana and I would like to know if anyone has tried it and what your experience has been. I have a male friend who tried it and said it did absolutely nothing for him. Karel

Since this is a narcotic, a synthesized morphine compound, how well it works would depend upon the dosage prescribed and the tolerance that the patient has built up to narcotics. The Extended Release form would cause fewer side effects than the instant or regular release, since it slowly releases the dose over a certain time period for better pain control.

To find a dosage that works for you, be it this med or some other, is purely a trial and error system between you and your doctor. You would need to try the first prescribed amount for a few weeks, and if that didn't get your pain under control, then speak to your doctor so they can adjust as necessary.

I would like to know if you did try this med, and how well did it work for you? What are the side effects that you had (if any?)

I have not tried this med myself, but since it is a narcotic, synthesized from Morphine, the side effects and the way it works for pain would more than likely be similar to those of taking morphine.

So if you have taken Morphine before, or any of the stronger narcotics, such as Oxycodone, Methadone, MS Contin, or Dilaudid, this should cause very similar side effects and work for pain relief in a similar manner.

Here's the monograph for Opan:

Now, this is illegal in the US to obtain without a prescription and you should never try to self diagnose or medicate.

Especially since a narcotic like this is so dangerous. It is a very strong opiate, so if you aren't already tolerant to them, from using different meds, you can't just jump up to a dose of one of these, or you could OD, even just on your first dose without abusing it.

These drugs also cause your blood pressure to lower and respiratory depression, which can be significant and life endangering.

So your best bet is to speak to your doctor and make sure you explore all options available if you have a pain issue that requires treatment.

Heavily addictive narcotics should never be the FIRST option of treatment.

i had been on 100 mgs twice a day of ms contin. my doc tried methadone as high as 15mgs 3 times and 10mgs 1 time daily. no significant help. now on opana er for 3 days. no pain relief yet. day 3-15 mg of er twice a day and opana straight as needed. having a lot of withdrawl symptoms so far and no pain relief. going from 200mg ms contin a day to 60mg a day of opana er is big drop. the doc is being cautious. i'm 71.

The drop factor here actually all depends on how the doses convert from one to the other.

For instance, when my doc first has to resort to narcotics for my pain management, I was on Oxycontin, we started with a low dose and then went up until we found the appropriate one to alleviate my pain.

Then my insurance company changed their policies and would no longer cover any type of Oxycontin, so I had to switch to MS Contin, in this case, the mg amount went up because of the way they convert, I went fro 20mg of Oxycontin to 60mg of MS Contin.

So it is very common for the dosage to go up or down, depending on what dosage would be the closest to be equivelent to your prior dosage.

Now as to being cautious, I know you said you are 71, but it would appear that you are already tolerant to opiates, so unless the doc is going to jump your dose up really high unexpectedly or you have had bad reactions to the narcotics, then he shouldn't be worried to the point that it leaves you in pain.

Talk to your docotr and have a real heart to heart about what you have used, how long, the doses and etc. and the truth about your pain levels on this new med at this dose.

If you aren't sure about the equivelent dosing, your pharmacist will be able to help.

to verwon:

i appreciate your thoughts. talked to doc this am.

friday, my dosage of opana er was 10 mgs twice a day. level 10 pain plus withdrawl.

saturday, called doc at home. went to 15 mg twice a day. no improvement.

so sunday, on my own, increased dosage to 20mg twice a day. no improvement.

doc called this am. was very unhappy about increasing dosage on my own.

but, since i didn't die, and since i still am in level 10 pain, doc increased my dosage to 25mg twice a day. we'll see.

doctor insists we have to go slowly.

your thought about talking to the pharmacist is a good one. i will do so.

i don't think it's possible for me to be pain free. 60 degree scoliosis plus many years as a marathon runner has destroyed my spine.

i thank you for your thoughts and suggestions.

i had decompressive lam of l 3,4 and 5 in 2002. that was a big help. my scoliosis was not nearly as severe as it is now.

Wow, that is so ironic, my problem stems from Scoliosis, too. My spine is shaped like an odd S, it curves 67degrees towards the left at the top, then there is huge gap in the vertebrae where the curve changes direction, which makes the discs cram together and pop out of place for no reason, then the bottom curve does 47degrees back towards my right side. I actually only have 2 straight vertebrae, the first 3 in my neck.

I was a rock climber, swimmer, and jogger, now the only one of those I can do safely is swimming since the water buoyancy takes the pressure off your spine.

To top the scoliosis problem off, I have a degenerative disc disease in my lower lumbar, and my left hip is screwed up and always keeps my pain at 9 to 10, but MRIs didn't show anything, so they aren't sure if that is also from my spinal problems or what.

I currently take a generic for MS Contin 60mgs every 12 hours, plus I have another 15mg of it, to try to keep my pain in better control, I can take it with the 60 if I need to, or a few hours later if it seems the 60 is wearing off too fast. I also have an instant release Oxycodone 5mgs that I can take for breakthrough pain up to 3 times a day.

I have never had any surgeries on it, the specialist in Pittsburgh said it would be a cosmetic fix only, so it just wasn't worth the risks for cosmetic reasons. I am now 35, I got used to the slight hump in my left shoulder a long, long time ago. Hardly anyone notices unless I point it out to them.

Anyway, I guess I can say that I really know what you are going through and you have my most heartfelt sympathy and best wishes.

I talked to my doc about it and neither one of us thinks I will ever be pain free, I would just like to get the edge off and have it manageable enough that I can act more normal again and take care of my family.

Unfortunately for you, some doctors tend to get that god complex going, they honestly think they know more about you and your pain levels and that just isn't true.

My doctor is so used to my med knowledge, that before she prescribes anything, she asks me what have I found that already worked, so this site doesn't waste time trying something inneffective. However, on the going slowly part, your doctor is right, this is a really strong narcotic it can be dangerous to jump to a high dose all at once, though since you are used to narcotics, I don't think he really needs to go that slowly.

However, if someone isn't already tolerant of narcotics and they are abruptly given or take a high dose, it can kill them, just one dose of these powerful ones is enough to cause OD for some people. They also cause lowered blood pressure, lowered heart rate, and respiratory depression.

You are just 6 years younger than my dad, but since he hasn't had any serious health problems throughout his life, he has never taken narcotics, he rarely even uses Tylenol or anything, so when he was in the hospital 6 weeks ago to have his gall bladder removed, I made sure to inform the head nurse of that, because in that case they have to monitor the anesthesia and pain meds very closely, if they were to just assume he uses meds just as much as any other person and they dose him according to his body weight and pain levels, as some docs do, it would have the potential to kill him.

So he is almost 43 years older than me, but if he took one of my pills, he would be in serious trouble.

I also have some information I would like to tell you about prescription drugs, but I am in too much pain to type it all up right now, I need to go relax and let my meds kick in.

If you have some free time, feel free to email me at [email protected] and I will happy to talk more, provide information and advice if I can, and tell you about those stupid generic drugs!

I have been on many of these drugs. Oxycotton and oxycodone both made my face break out with bad knots and pimples. It was weird. I am on the 40's of opana extended release. I have had no problems. The opana does get rid of about 95%. I just get a flash of pain here and there. The problem I have with opana is it makes me sooo tired. VERY hard to get up, but once I am up, I am ok. So, it is a good medicen, but if you are looking to get high, this one won't do it. That is why I like it, no jitters! I am only interested in getting my pain to disapear, so it works good for me. One at 9am and 1 at 9pm. Good luck!!

Oh! There is one thing I would like to tell some of ya'll. Some pain Doctors can burn nerves. Mine did this for many years and then I didn't need hardly anything pain meds. He had a Hospital in the back end of his office. I would get there about 9:30, get an I.V. and go into the operation room, get just enough of something to relax me, he would go into my neck and burn about 3 or 4 nerves for my ruptured disc's and then I'd wait for about 30 minutes and have my hubby take me home. I loved it! Problem is my insurance was getting worse and worse every year and I had to turn to meds for my pain. If you have good insurance, ask about this!!!

Is Opana ER as good as Oxycontin?

I have been on 40mg of opana er for about 4 months. I also use 60 mg for breakthrough pain. I could really tell a difference with the opana er. Being a time release has allowed me to use less of the Roxicodone. My problem now is a new year and I have not meet my max out of pocket yet (not deductable that was met on 1/3, so when I went to get the opana filled, my portion was $172 for just one month. I cannot afford that. I am on 24 different prescription medications a day. Thank God for insurance and I pray for those that do not have it.

Does anyone know what the conversion factor is between Percocet 10 mg and Opana 5 mg? I am currently on 10 mg Percocet every 4 hours for chronic & severe Fibro pain, and doctor wants to change to 5 mg Opana, short acting type. But I'd like to know if that's the proper converson factor. Also, do I titrate down till I'm off Percocet before beginning the Opana?

I have been diagnosed with mulitple degenerated disk desease and Sciatica in both legs. My pain doctor prescribed me 20mg Opana ER for chronic pain. My insurence would not cover it and it cost $400. I cannot afford this. Is there another medication that is effective and cost less? Thanks for your help

Opana is also oxymorphone. Keep in mind that drug is 5 times stronger than morphine. The classic remedy for pain, oxycodone is only 2.5 times stronger than morphine. I know that based on being intrigued with strong opiates, however I never abused them. Two years ago I was in a car accident and broke a rib and had a brain bleed. Luckily since I was drunk I didnt feel it. Then I sobered up, I wake up a few days later with an IV in me. I believe I was on morphine. Anyway, it seems the stronger the pills are, the more expensive the drug. When I was in the hospital I was given Percocet 5 mgs. They gave me two. Even after being on morphine for a few days I was still feeling the Percocets. I suggest talking to your about 40 mg of OxyContin. See what the price tag is on that. Keep in mind that Opana is I believe the strongest pill on the market. Methadone might be a good alternative too for pain.

I've been on Opana for several years. It's a very powerful drug used to treat cancer patients.

wow! Did nothing for him? Wow! What was the mg? Opana is better than oxy in my opinion. 5 knee surgeries later & now pending total knee replacement, I'm NOT in any hurry for this surgery. It's been hell getting off of them the last 2 times. But IF I had a choice, Opana for sure! It's the best (again, in my opinion, it worked better for me than anything else). Good luck & be well ~

I've was on 20mgs 3 times a day. Did next to nothing for the pain, I guess everyone's body chemistry is different. Unlike other posts, I had no problem at all weaning off of it. I thibk a lot of people are scared to come off of it because they say the withdrawal is intense (similar to Fentyl) but I had NO problem - wean off of this crap - the pain reflief it gives is not worth getting hooked on it. A terrible drug and I also cannot believe they hand these out.

LAST WEDNESDAY i accidentally took one of these. my grandmother had mixed her opana with her advil it was a 40 mg. well, i took one out the bottle. i weigh 120 lbs. i took it and exactlly 15 mintutes later she watched me nose dive into the fireplace. i had over dosed. i turned blue. and 911 was called. I had over dosed accidentally. I used to abuse pain killers! i used to be an addict and would take 8 to 9 750mg vics or same with perks or roxy 30s, all day EVERYDAY. i detoxed myself about 5 mos ago. so i guess my tolerance went down. i HAVE NEVER taken one pill before and overdosed. iv never even overdosed taking more than one!!!! but when i took that opana it ALMOST KILLED ME. and that was JUST ONE PILL. please be careful. taking it. DO NOT take more than what your doctor says, just for the simple fact it doesn't creep, it hits you hard suddenly. and i almost died. if i had of been home alone that day i would be dead. please use with caution. I can't belive that they even make them!!!!! i am so agianst hard drugs now after my detox. it is an AMAZING feeling to be clean!!! and drug free. opana is going to be the new crack for the younger generation. so sad. but to answer anyones question BE CAREFUL. it is NO JOKE and a serious serious serious drug. im telling you- don't think o yeah im going to take one and get high now. NO you will OVER DOSE ACCIDENTALLY!!!!!!! im telling you!!! it happened to me , tomorrow will be a week ago! with ONE PILL!!!!! and i have a HIGH HIGH tolerance! god bless and please don't abuse them!!
