Updated

I have been testing positive for benzos and i cant figure out why. I have been taking suboxone & Ondansetron & promethazine. Thats it. If i fail another drug test, then my doctor is gonna kick me out. If anybody knows of any common substances, prescription or over the counter medications please inform me. Thanks

Recovering heroin addict. I take suboxone sub/film 12mg/day. Every month I test + for benzodiazepines & oxycontin. I hate benzos and It was 2-3 years since l took a Valium for severe anxiety. My doctor even started using a different test, same + results every time! The only other med I am prescribed to is adipex, which would only + for amphetamines. Ihave used occasionally, but that wouldn't cause + for benzos. I wonder if it something in the naloxone to cause false +'s.

Naloxone (not to be confused with naltrexone) is also a thebaine derivative like oxycodone. Despite that it will not produce the same euphoria or effect of oxycodone, it's chemical structure, and therefore chemistry, is very, very similar (borderline identical) to that of oxymorphone--which gives naloxone its ability to interfere with most opiates and opioids--which is a metabolite (byproduct) produced from the liver when breaking down oxycodone (therefore oxycontin also).

If the drug test(s) is looking for this metabolite, it will very likely test positive for oxycontin. There's your answer.

Molipaxin is a brand name (please use generics—names of actual chemicals in the designer drug for clarification and simple answers!!) for trazodone. Trazodone is considered an alternative, less hazardous drug than a benzodiazepine for treating a host of virtually identical diagnoses.

Drug makers knew (and know—trust me) how effective benzodiazepines were (are) at relieving stress and anxiety. Quite frankly, benzodiazepines are still among the best at doing so; they have the added advantage of causing less respiratory depression than did the once, very often prescribed class of drugs known as BARBITURATES. Yet, benzodiazepines are still AT LEAST as effective in relieving anxiety, aborting panic attacks, mitigating depression, treating psychoses, in addition to treating sleep disorders, if not MORE so, than the once ubiquitous, all-powerful, class of drugs we call barbiturates and which many once thought of as a panacea (as Freud did of cocaine, and as others did of opium, and as still others did of LSD, and as still Others did…ad nauseum)..

However, drug makers are also VERY AWARE of the inherent risks, abuse potential (rapid onset of dependence and, frequently, addiction especially when used with other high-risk, CNS-depressant drugs such as opiates/opioids—which I probably don’t need to explicate, to illuminate, or to delineate for some of you). The fact that many governments worldwide, including our own, have designated this class of drugs as a controlled substance (schedule IV in the U.S., also known as C-IV in said country) provides all the more reason to avoid expanding this class of drug and find something…with similar effects but without the legal…hurdles.

So, naturally, a profitable plan is to produce a drug—in this case, a class of drugs known as PHENYLPIPERAZINES—that has a virtually identical effect on patients without falling into the same class (benzodiazepine) of drug so as to avoid the legal, moral, and medical stigma, "unnecessary" hesitation by the healthcare community to prescribe and to approve said drugs, and other, profit-margin reducing…â€inconveniences.â€

Congratulations to a corporate pharmaceutical organization in Italy (Angelini something) in producing a new drug that not only helps with anxiety and sleep, but also aids in relieving depression without having the disadvantage of belonging to the benzodiazepine class (and thereby avoiding the “distinction†of joining a class of controlled and scheduled drugs).

Again, trazodone is considered by many—and MISTAKENLY so—to be a benzodiazepine. Why? Yes, because its chemical structure (as one would tend to expect) is very similar in nature to the benzodiazepine class of drugs. Ergo, this "virtual" benzodiazepine copycat, ipso facto, is metabolized by the liver to produce an analogous, if not identical (ask a real doctor FFS), harmony of metabolic byproducts (chemicals) that are identical to those produced by that of a collection of benzodiazepines, or *a* benzodiazepine.

Congratulations! You have just failed (tested positive, that is) a drug test that includes analyzing urine, or some other post-hepatic body fluid, excretion, and so on, for the presence of a benzodiazepine DESPITE that you never consumed one.

Another victory for corporate pharmaceutical America; God, I love capitalism!!!

Oh, that was your answer!

Hi! I just tested positive for what my Dr said as, "xanax or ambien" I haven't taken any xanax since Oct. 27.. I did take 2 trazadones last week due to my insomnia.. is there a possibility of a "benzo buildup" bc my Dr said xan would be outta my system in 5 days.. xanax was my D.O.C. for about 6 years.. taken daily, at least 4mg for those 6 years.. I have seen where trazadone can show a false positive.. I've also been taking OTC sleep aide, as well as melatonin, both from dollar general.. does anyone else have this issue?

Xanax is one of the shortest acting benzo's because it's metabolized and excreted from your body so quickly. It's highly unlikely that your long-term Xanax consumption is to blame if you haven't taken it since--as you stated--October even though your daily dosage was so high. Trazodone is very likely the culprit. Your best bet is to ask for what's called a, "GC/MS" test to confirm that you're not on any drugs you shouldn't be. GC stands for gas chromatography. MS stands for mass spectrometry. Both are very precise methods of identifying chemical compounds with a very low percentage of error.

I was taking low dose benzodiazepines (and addicted to them)for many years and put on them and Prempro at same time. Slowly got off benzos after several years but stayed on Prempro. I was no longer addicted to benzos, but when doctor told me about 5 years after getting off benzos it was time to stop Prempro, after about 7-10 days later, I went into severe benzo w/d and bad depression even though I was no longer on benzos. I had to reinstate benzos . Somehow the benzos and hormones were connected in my brain. Could the hormones be on same receptors as benzos and when I tried to get off hormones it triggered severe benzo w/d even though I had been off benzos for about 5 years?

I am beginning to think there is something wrong with a batch of suboxone strips. My daughter has had the same problem many of you are talking about, failing urine screen for benzos and has not taken anything AT ALL but her Sub and her 20mg Lisinopril....I see others taking Lisinopril have failed as well but her doc says NO, it should not show up. It is very discouraging as she almost got kicked off the program today for second time failing test when she honest to goodness has NOT taken any benzos....very discouraging, if anyone has figured anything out about this PLEASE respond. Thanks!

I've gotten many false positives for benzos throughout the winter. I've been in alcohol detox where they use them, but last was over a month ago and still they're showing up. In autumn they showed too, and I hadn't taken any benzos for many months. Only drug i'm taking is valdoxan, that is agomelatine, so i guess it's the culprit, even thou I can't figure out why. Any idea? All those drug tests have been taken from urine, I guess i should ask to take blood test and send it to lab, thou I'm in no trouble at least yet. Still, those positives bother me a lot.

I'm testing positive for benzos and take nothing but suboxone. I had my urine sent off and it specifically tested for a benzo called oxazOne or sears which I have never taken. Why is this happening. Four positives for benzos. I don't even want to leave house.

There seems to be so many people discussing false positives for benzodiazepines that a professional needs to find out why.....when I tested positive my urine was sent to lab and was positive for oxazapem....brand name serax......I have never heard of this med or taken it. Though, I'm noticing that Advil pm or Benadryl seems to be a common thread throughout post of those testing positive. Anyone have suggestions please post.

Yep, I took Benadryl. Actually it was childrens benadryl, dollar general brand. That seemed to be the only time I tested positive for benzos knowing I did not take any.

I Agree! A professional of some sort needs to check this out, cause if it's our regulated clinics messing with us . . . . .I guess were just screwed! They've made so who's gonna believe a bunch of ppl(lying addicts in there eyes) who've failed drug screens in the past, so why on earth believe us now? It'll just make us crazy or give in to those urges and make it look like we were really still just lying addicts! Ugh!!!

Only two drug treatments have been pretty more successful to result in bogus good results with regard to benzodiazepines- the first substance is actually Daypro (oxaprozin) a new nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication (NSAID). Daypro will be the only medication effectively proven to trigger fake benefits. The state run Daypro recommending infomration claims "false-positive pee immunoassay testing assessments regarding diazepam have been noted in individuals using Daypro. The reason is , not enough specificity with the verification assessments. False-positive check benefits might be predicted stay following discontinuation involving Daypro therapy. Confirmatory exams, for example fuel chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), may identify Daypro coming from diazepam.

My old counsoler at the methadone clinic responded right away saying I was positive.I went ballistic and said I don,t do that weak ass s***.I,m old school 58 years old.A stinking benzo could not stand up to a barbiturate. She had it retested and it came back negative.I would not give a benzo to a cockroach. They are garbage.Instant blackouts and no high. But I got a new counselor who told me seven months after the fact that in the previous months I was dirty for five for benzos.Thank you very much b****.For not letting me contest this crap.I would have screamed bloody murder!Instead of going to the clinic one time a month,I have to go every day to this s*** hole. And I mean s*** hole. The methadone clinic. The best life has to offer.Don,t get me wrong. It works like a charm if you have a problem with narcotics.Blocks the euphoria every time.Opiates only.

So I got a letter in the mail today from the office that prescribes my suboxone, warning me that I am in danger of being able to continue treatment with them (after 2 1/2 years). Now I am not perfect, but when I asked for the reason why? I was actually shocked to find out that I had tested positive for benzo's. The shocking part for me was that while I had screwed up and taken a few valiums it had been AT least 2 months ago--only they were saying it was from my past visit (2 weeks ago) and also that I had failed the test for the same reason a month prior to that. Tell me how then did I pass the test that could have shown up positive, only for them to all of a sudden show positive for benzo's (3 types too!) when I have been taking nothing other than my suboxone, vibryd, diclofenac and occassional headache meds? I honestly can not remember if I took benadryl around the time I had taken the drug screens, but it seems as if either benadryl or sinus medicine has caused these false positives!! .I mean who do you think the doc will believe--me, a recovering addict or the people who diagnose the tests?????

I also failed a drig test for benzo's and have taken none! Im also in rehab and take subutex the milder form of suboxone and also take benedryl to sleep at night! It had to be the benedryl! Im so angry cause you know the rehab professionals have probably heard every excuse under the sun, but when you know in your heart of hearts that your clean it can be very frustrating! Benzo aren't even something I took when I had a prescription for them, I still took OTC meds to sleep, mainly benedryl!

Benzo's when taken for at least a month will stay in your system for 45 days !!!!

Keli: You mentioned a headache medicine toward the end of your post. What was it? Midrin comes to mind as a possible drug that contains in it a chemical (dichloralphenazone and isometheptene) that may cause a false positive for benzo (just a thought). First and foremost, don't (as someone else said describing his reaction when told--though i do understand the feeling!) don't go ballistic! I know how frightening it can be to suddenly have your routine for getting your pain or treatment meds all of a sudden be in a state of uncertainty!! The best, immediate response you can give to whomever told you that the test was positive is that you're more than willing to prove or do whatever it takes to clear this bogus test error.

Also very important: Valium (diazepam) is a benzo--which you know I think. Unfortunately, it's a very, very long-acting benzo--it's one of the benzo's that is not only very, very long-acting but when broken down and metabolized, also has metabolites that can be identified by blood tests. Just as an example, if you took just 10 mg of Valium, the amount (if fully absorbed) present in your blood even 200 HOURS LATER could be a shocking half (5 mg) still! Do the math; this means about 8 days later, it's still very, very present in blood--it also means that after another 8 days (so, 16 days total), there is still 2.5 mg in blood (still absolutely a failed test). So, yes--even if you took just 1 tablet, depending on your liver function, kidney function, and overall metabolism rate, just 1 or 2 tablets could lead to a test failure a month or so later, and more. Valium is arguably one of the WORST benzo's to take if you are not legitly prescribed a benzo and have to routinely be tested for controlled substances even if the test is every 4 weeks!
