Doctors Willing To Prescribe Heavy Pain Medication In Colorado (Page 57)

Updated

I have a serious problem. My dr. had two patients start dr. shopping and has decided it is too big of a pain in his butt to continue prescribing, even though I have gotten MRIs and Xrays to prove my problems. I have over a half a dozen herniated discs in my low back, along with degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, scoliosis and arthritis in my facet joints. I am currently on5 30mg oxycodone a day for breakthrough and 60mg of methadone for my long lasting meds. I REALLY need a doctor in the Denver, CO area who will not judge me because of my age, thinking I'm just some drug seeker as I TRULY need my meds to function. I am even being placed on disability until I can get my back healed because if something doesn't change I will be in big time pain for the rest of my life. If ANYONE knows of a good doctor that prescribes strong meds willingly in the Denver area please let me know. I am in desperate need of help as I am going to be SCREWED if I cannot find a good doctor. SOMEONE please help me with a doctor!!!!!

70-it is possible to take Norco for years with no liver impact. There is a list called The Liver Friendly Diet. Follow it's suggestions if you cannot switch.

I had Hep C for 25 yes ( now cured- the drug will be out soon), and many years on 4 Norco a day. I have the liver of a woman half my age.

Just DON'T DRINK! Alcohol and Tylenol are the fatal mix..

Just a message to everyone, it seems to me, that the more I know, which my doctor noticed very readily how much I know about all this stuff, what it does to you, how it functions in the body, all that stuff. But it seems to me the more you know, and the more your doctor can see you know, like being very concerned about knowing everything you can about these medications helps them to trust that you aren't a drug seeker, and that you TRULY care about being healthy and not just having a bunch of drugs to feel high. At least with my doctor, he was blown away (in a good way) about how much I know about these drugs. He even told me he can tell that surgery would be a terrible idea for me and that I need these medications because 7 different back conditions obviously cause a ton of pain and surgery would MAYBE fix one or two, but I would still be in pain and still need meds, maybe even more, due to the surgery tearing through a bunch of my muscle tissue, leaving fibrin (scar tissue) behind to cause even more problems and pain. All that to say, do your research, know everything you can about everything concerning these powerful medications. It seems to help greatly, at least in my case. I just figured I would share this info, as I have tried sharing info on these drugs specifically, but nothing compares to doing the research yourself.

I am in the same situation but now the two doctors I'm seeing call me a liability and won't help me. I have had six spine surgeries and I'm still in constant pain. If you find a doctor please please let me know. I'm so sorry you have to go through this, most doctors don't understand and have lost their ability to care.

70 you can also take Milk Thistle. It has regenerated the livers of alcoholics who had cirrhosis and made them like new. I use it as well as something for my kidneys.

kuaka, thats interesting about nicotine. I am a smoker and all of my drs say that nicotine is one of the reasons I have pain. Maybe its not nicotine, must be all the other stuff they add to the cigarettes I might try getting some straight nicotine and try it. Can you use vapor?

I don't have a red card but occasionally take edibles (THC) for pain and nausau. I specifically asked Joe, Mike and the other that works there if it was ok if I was positive for THC. They said that was fine. "Just don't come in stoned" is all

One thing to remember, Since the (CSA) Controlled Substance Act was changed in 2012 Yet again. Most Doctors will try every other Pain Management option possible. When all else fails, only then, will they prescribe a full opoid antagonist.

well I live here in MO, had a bad accident where I fell 35 ft & it messed me up in all kinds of ways, but because of MO stupid laws, since I have a little bit of settlement money, they cut my Medicaid off, till it's all spent & gone, so thinking of getting a camper to come out to CO, but I need to find a pain management doctor 1st that will work with me, all my records show, I've never abused my pain meds what so ever in any way shape or form, ( which all those drug seekers have ruined it & made it hard for people like me ) but I'm trying to find a good doctor & get my records sent out before I drive out to make sure they'll help me, can you help me with the info to your doctor, most of them that I've found online, only do inj. & those have never helped me, I've been getting by only taking 3 - 30 mil morphine's in a day, I use to take 200, but I never want to get that high in milligrams of med's again, I only want what it barely takes me to get by, can you please help with some info on your Doc, he sounds like a good doctor.. Thanks

well I took that # down you gave & called them & now working on trying to get my records out to them, I live here in MO @ the moment, have been since 95, but in Dec of 06 I had co-workers not put some scaffolding up correctly & caused me to fall 35 ft & landed on my feet, now you can imagine the mess it did to my whole spine, messed up my back, neck, even did the superman break, so I'm lucky to even be walking, only by the grace of the Great Spirit, but he doesn't do anything for physical pain, I just lost my pain doctor here all over 2 tokes of cannabis, when I've never had a problem before, I don't hardly smoke it, but sometimes I'll have no appetite for days & can't eat, until I smoke a little, I have no clue what I'm going to do if I can't find good doctor that realizes my condition & helps me, I'm a good person in all of society, I treat everyone the same, haters I just ignore, but feel pity for them, what would they rather have me do..?? get help from a doctor like I've been doing or do something I've never had to do & go out on the streets to self medicate, it's like a down-ward-spiral of a system, that hurts more people then it helps.. it's so wrong..

So is cpr doing the mail order thing now or is it going to be another month or two? Has anyone been in recently? My appointment is coming up and need to know since I will be leaving the same day and need it to me within 30 min. Have a family emergency which involves a funeral and want as much time as possible before he passes.

I have an appointment on the 5th. Amanda said that she doesn't think they're doing the mail thing just yet because dr. May needs to come back before they do it. I made my appt a few days early just in case because my original appt date was on day 29, and with not knowing the mailing system I'm just trying to play it safe. But I don't think they're doing it quite yet, but if they are, I should be ok since I'm going In early. But I will post on here what they are doing when I go in. Tammy, is your appt before the 5th when mine is? From what Amanda said it seems like that process isn't being implemented until May comes back and is a larger part of the facility as opposed to helping run a hospital in I believe OKlahoma. But either way I will let you know for sure what they're doing, just tell me when your appt is.

Hey everyone, hope you are all doing well. I posted a good while back about looking for a good doctor to work with me with my current pain medication. I am moving to Colorado Springs in less than 2 weeks , (1000 miles from where I am now) and I need to get on the ball about finding a good DR. If someone knows of a good PCP and Pain management DR (I will be needing a PCP for sure) in Colorado Springs, I would greatly appreciate any help. Hope you all have a good day.

First of all, to those of you that are new...plz take a few minutes and read the entire thread. You will see many providers mentioned and even what those who have gone to each of those and their reaction. I see a lot of newcomers to the thread asking about providers. Read backwards to the beginning...you will see lots of names mentioned (including those who were ineffective). There are still a few good pain med docs out there.

Obviously, it will be easier if you come in to a new provider having already been prescribed certain opiates..a new doc is generally hesitant being the first to prescribe strong meds like oxycontin, morphine, oxycodone, etc..however, if you have already proven that you are tolerant with no bad side effects, he/she is more likely to start by putting you on a similar regimen to start. Its taken a friend of mine nearly 2 years (terrible back pain) and 5 providers to be prescibed an effective dose of morphine (for long acting) and oxycodone (for short acting). Finally, he has someone who understands his pain and the debilitating effects it has had on his work, social life...life in general...and they are slowly increasing his meds. So if you are coming in to a new provider, if they are good, they will listen and get you on meds that will be more effective in your case..just be patient (difficult, I know, when pain is involved). But give it a few months, show perfect UAs (showing pos for what you are presribed and neg for what you are not.). Be honest and up front. You must be able to do this if you are going to have a good relationship with any doctor, let alone a pain doc. They have heard it all and its virtually impossible to be honest about your pain and what has and hasn't worked without sometimes sounding like a drug seeker. As MAC has said...it is imperative that your knowledge about your condition, previous therapies and their outcomes, triggers, etc, the more equipped the doc is with creating a regimen that works best for you. This can often take months to get it right, but again, with the right provider, it is worth it. So before you see a provider for the first time, I suggest you review the above so that you can confidentlly tell the doc your pain history, including treatments, diagnostics, meds, etc that you have tried in the past. Try to be as specific as possible. If you haven't already, every patient (esp. chronic pain) should make sure they get a copy of their med records from each and every provider. Looking over your records, you can better explain all of the above. Do no lie about you have and haven't taken or done, because they may ask for your records dating back years, When it comes to pain management, the more honest and truthful you are the better off you are in the long run. If it scares your provider that you armed with the knowledge of your own condition, then you need to move on. Speaking of which, a few of you have concerns over what to do when you meet with a pain doc for the first time and are very dissatisfied...afraid it will look like doctor shopping. I have seen about 7 providers in the last 2 years after I lost my tried and true that I had been with for years. It's ok to see a doc and not return. As far as perception, be sure to tell each provider about your previous visit (incl. when you had meds filled..they'll already know cuz they've pulled up your rx report). I've had occasion to visit with a doc who as it turned out wasn't able/willing to help me. A few times, they would write me a 30 day script to allow me to find a new provider. If I was really unhappy and had other appts scheduled I would either NOT ask for an rX and if they wrote me some anyway, I did not fill them. One time, it was 2 weeks between 2 different pain consults. I was out of meds, so I filled the scripts from Doc #1 but then immediately told Doc #2, including why I was uncomfortable with Doc #1. At that point, Doc #2 can choose to mix up the meds and/or post date. Either way as long as you are not filling scripts from multiple docs within the same period, you are not doctor shopping per se, but you ARE seeking a pain provider that provides you what you need! Side note: each initial consultation ranges from $150 to $400 out of pocket. I have Medicaid and very few pain specialists accepts Medicaid..it is not feasible from an economic point of view.

We are ALL responsible for our own health and if something doesn't feel right, trust your gut. For example, most pain docs will NOT prescribe opiates with Tylenol for daily use. I personally refuse to take a tylenol based meds on a daily basis (even gave up a pain doc that I loved because in the end he would not budge on the Percocet/Roxy conundrum). Some docs will prescribe meds such as Norco, Vicodyn (hydrocodone), Percocet (oxycodone) only because their cost is lower as is the potential for abuse (or so the DEA thinks)....Taking Tylenol (or advil/motrin) every day scares the hell out of me. Its bad enough my liver has to process all the meds I'm on (a recent blood sample sustains a healthy liver result). To those of you who are prescribed copious amounts of Tylenol (in your pain med) should really reconsider. If you find that extra does of Tylenol helps, then take it separately only as needed on your bad days. Remember this, for those of us who are chronic pain sufferers and who have had for years and years tried every suggestion (even taking off-label meds like Topomax for severe, chronic migraines (an antii seizure med and has a legal suit pending) only to discover that a medication cocktail is the ONLY thing that enables you to literally get out of bed each day..let only accomplish anything and actually have a semblance or a normal life.2 years ago, I spent 4 months tapering down to virtual nothing because I wanted to see if perhaps I no longer needed them. HUGE MISTAKE!, I literally spent 4 months in bed, with migraines and vomiting EVERY day.(Had I not had familial help, I would literally be homeless as a result. It took several months and several different providers to get back to where I was... Finally I; now prescribed the 30mg oxy (or roxycodone) and 300mg Morphine daily and I am closer to where I was when I foolishly decided to stop. I am hoping to get my dose increased again over time to where I was a consistent 2 on the pain scale..whereas now I am at a 4...trust me...I'll ll take it. While I feel blessed for being treated appropriately, it is not a fun endeavor. Our brain adjusts so quickly to these pain meds that our tolerance WILL increase where we will need more to accomplish the same result. The withdrawals from opiates, while not fatal, make you wish they were at that time. So we are forced with things like needing to take time off at least one half day a month (if you are blessed enough to be able to work) for your monthly visits, scheduling trips around our med refills. Because they can not be available to anyone else, one must lock up their meds or take them with them everywhere they go, which heightens the chance for loss. It is part of a lifestyle and not a very glamorous one at that. There is no longer euphoria. My tolerance is so high that the amount I would need to actually feel "high" is an amount I am afraid would literally kill me. For me, these meds simply make me feel close to normal which is fine by me. Even still, I, who has had a high tolerance to both pain and pain meds since I was a baby, cringe when I have to actually mutter those words..buts its critical that my doc knows this. I have found time and time again..the best and only way to go is complete honesty ... including, at some point, your expectations. If the doc hears your story and is unable to help you, at least you find out sooner rather than later. While I recommend calling a new provider ahead of time to find out the treatments they offer to save $, just be warned that while you may have been told that the provider offers pain medicine/management as an option, you may get in to see the doc only to find out that they only offer minimal pain meds and only in extreme cases. I call in case they only do interventional pain management w/o narcotics....which most pain clinics do now..it saves a visit.

Thanks for listening and I hope it helps those of you just starting to navigate this wonderful world of chronic pain management or whose previous pain therapy was discontinued due to know fault of their own and who are desperately trying to find someone new to take over. Suggestion...make a list of bullet points you want to discuss but again, keep it short and priority driven. You can get to the less important points during subsequent visits. Come prepared with previous provider notes (at least 3 months), xrays, radiology reports, list of current meds. Equally important, come prepared with an outline of your pain history. When/how it started. It's progression. Where it is now. The effect it has had on your quality of life. Again, be sure to bring a cheat sheet of past providers, treatments tried (and the result), medications tried in the past and that outcome (no effect, negative effect, positive effect. If you don't have radiology reports, call the provider who took the xrays/scans ahead of time and ask if you can pick up a copy of the radiology report and I like to have a CD copy of my own as well which I make a copy for any new provider. Once, a pain doc picked up something in my neck xray that the radiologist missed.

Finally, read thru this thread from beginning to end. Make notes of providers mentioned in a positive light. Call those you wish to make an appt with and ascertain that the same provider(s) are still there and.or that they still do medication management along with other therapies.
Remember, of all things, pain is probably the most subjective sensation of all. NO ONE knows your pain nor your tolerance to it. Never apologize for your pain and what works and what doesn't. I believe all of us would give up the medication in a NY Minute if it meant no chronic pain. Same goes for docs..what works for you might not work for me. My suggestion...keep looking until you find what you NEED. Be honest, straightforward, and if its an initial visit, be concise, outlining those points that you feel they need to hear. This forum is a GREAT tool..and it has gotten my life back on track (thx MAC). Take the time too to use HealthGrades, AngiesList and a host of other doctor rated sites. Once you have narrowed down your choices, check out each website to make sure there have been no changes. I noticed many pain clinics are now beginning NOT to prescribe narcotics at all to any new patient, while their existing patients are grandfathered in. If you are told this, don't be afraid to ask the clerk if she knows of any other pain speciailists in the area that might be of more value to you. I received many names that way and got an insight into their tx plans before deciding to make an appointment or not. Again, sorry for the rambling. My heart breaks every time I read a new post. I do feel so much less alone. This thread is must reading for me now lol. Also, any one out there who has great doc...please don't keep it to yourself, afraid too many drug seekers will ruin it for you. The Metro Denver area is large and if you are like me who voluntarily gave up my drivers license because of my meds, it is not feasible to just go anywhere. Having more provider names across the city would continue to help. Peace and Health..Lizzie.

A while back, I mentioned Boulder Mapleton Clinic as a great Pain clinic. Best place ever. I had to give it up when I gave up my license (I live in South Metro Denver). If you are vehicularly mobile, live in Boulder, or have a chauffer it may be worth it. There has been some turnover in staff in the past year so I can not promise things haven't changed, but the clinic's medical director is the same. Theres usually a month or two wait list for initial consults so if you're intrigued don't delay.Be forewarned, they won't even make a new patient appt until they have received at least the past 3 months in records as well as a referral from your pcp. If anyone follows up on this, will you let us know how it goes. Oh and the # is 303-441-0506.

GODSPEED

Sorry guys, I've been out of pocket this past month! Saw the new guy up at CPR for the second time! Had first appointment after lunch and ended up chatting with some other clients from there about this new guy! A bunch of horror stories and apparently lots of clients have been jumping ship due to his judgemental attitude! In discussing this with other folks we decided Leonard and Dr Mays needed to know how disappointed we were with his treatment! We were told that he would no longer be there after this week due to the amount of complaints from clients! Additionally, the mail meds program is on hold and being re-evaluated! They first want to get someone in that the clients like then it may be revisited! It also has caused many complaints, valid concerns and with the issues with the doc, they aren't going to put this in place currently! As I was told, many other issues to b dealt with before they will deal with this! Of course, the doc was extremely nice to me today and actually listened to my issues! No further discussions about decreasing my current doses or nothing of the sort! The only thing mentioned, was like the oxy's the new thing that is being now on the DEA is decreasing MS Contin's 60 mg to three or less per day! I'm happy they r listening to us and r concerned about our concerns! Renewed my feelings about the care they provide! Good news I feel!

I'm so glad to hear that about CPR. I have only been a patient for almost two months and he's the only one I had seen ever. You guys are talking about Malgrim or whatever it is right?

He was so rude to me the first time I went and didn't give me extended release meds, just oxy IR 4x a day. Then I went back like 2 weeks later, paid the med change fee because as I had told him I was having surgery and he didn't listen to me....so he gave me 60 20mg OxyContin....had no idea my insurance needed authorization, so I paid out the ass for that.

I go back next week, will he be gone by then???
