Cutting 40mg Tabs In Half To Make 20 Mg Dose

My husband was taking generic 40mg Simvastatin made by Accord Healthca. They are oval brick red with S 6 on side 1. Can we cut them in half to get 20mg dose. His Dr wrote a new prescription for 20mg and I hate to waste a half full bottle of the 40mg .

This can safely be done with any medication that isn't time released, as long as there aren't specific instructions on the label that tell you not to do so.

Prescribing a new dosage is just a definite way to make sure the person is getting the correct dose, because when you cut a pill in half, there can be some irregularities, but they are usually miniscule.

You may want to try cutting one or two and see how it works. Some pills tend to very crumbly, so cutting results in their falling apart and can make it harder to get the correct dosage.

I am taking Pravastatin tabs 20 mg, and I am experiencing some side effects from it. Namely, headaches, muscle, joint, and bone pain. If I switched to Lipitor tabs 20 mg, do you think I would still suffer the side effects or would the Lipitor be not give me the same side effects?

Stephanie, there is really no way to say how any medication is going to affect anyone. The only thing you can do is try it and see how it works for you.

The Lipitor contains the active ingredient Atorvastatin, so it is another statin medication, just like the Pravastatin and it does carry the risk of causing those same types of side effects.

Another option that you can discuss with your doctor would be the use of Fenofibrate:

There are many people that have had problems with the statin medications and had to switch to something else.
