Beline Capsules (Page 3)

Updated

I have ankylosing spondylitis and have been taking Beline capsules for nine months with remarkable results. I am largely pain free with an all round feel good benefit. Even a very long standing skin rash has disappeared. When I stop taking them the pain returns quite noticeably. Nonetheless I have strong reservations about herbal medications and intend to consult with my Rheumatologist shortly. Pity!!!

Ok, so I am trying to understand this - the belinecapsules web site which sells the product - are they the manufacturer, or just a distributor? If they only distribute Beline then why would they need to do testings with the MHRA? I thought only manufacturers have to undergo product testing. Guess I am not that familiar with rules in the UK. Is it still okay for me to order to the USA?

Hi Roy, that's the article. From what I can tell Focus hr have exclusive eu distribution rights from calixer labs in singapore. According to eu/mhra law Focus HR is accountable for ensuring the product is safe and registered so in the event of a investigation/prosecution it will be focus hr who the authorities will be dealing with

Hi everyone,

It has been over a month since we had locked this discussion thread. To make a long story short, the company that distributes Beline Capsules from belinecapsules.com contacted us on the 20th of June [2011] and stated that their lawyer found a number of statements on here to be libelous. We decided that it would be best to take down portions of content and lock this forum until a proper review could be conducted. Even though that decision completely went against our policy of free speech in this community, there are situations where we need to be sure that the rights of others are not being violated, and that is why a number of posts were cleaned up and/or taken down.

On the 27th of June [2011], we placed two calls into the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) office in London and spoke with two separate individuals about the status of Beline Capsules. Both of them stated that the most current information concerning this product is available on their web site (and as of writing this post the only content which appears about Beline Capsules on the MHRA web site is the original product warning [A]). They also stated that Beline Capsules are "not licensed at all" in the UK, and that "people should be very careful when taking this".

The MHRA also responded to us via email, in which they stated "The MHRA has been investigating this issue and can confirm there is a quality issue with undeclared pharmaceuticals being identified in some samples in some countries ... Focus HR have agreed to remove Beline from the UK market, though they will still export. Exports are out with the jurisdiction of the MHRA and Focus HR will need to ensure they are complying with the regulations of the import countries. As Focus HR only sold Beline online, the website is being adapted to prevent sale or supply in the UK in the future, a deadline of the end August has been agreed between the MHRA and Focus HR to complete this work. Therefore, after this deadline date you will not be able to purchase Beline in the UK."

We are now re-opening this discussion thread for comments.

1. Please feel free to share your personal experiences with this product. Please refrain from insults, accusations, or attacks, and stick with FACTS.

2. Any references to other sources of information or repetition of information from other sources should be properly quoted and referenced. For example, instead of saying "I've heard that product X contains Y", you should provide a credible reference and quote text exactly as it appears on the other source. If we cannot verify the credibility of a statement or source then we shall have the right to exclude it from our site.

We hope that all of the above makes sense. We recommend that you conduct your own research and come to appropriate conclusions on your own about any products as well as your health!

I am really concerned and very unhappy about not being able to purchase any more Beline capsules. My husband has had almost 3 years without being able to do anything due to wrongly given statins and having an extremly bad effect. He ended up having to take chemo drugs to cope with the infamatory arthritis which resulted. These drugs and others mixed in had massive side effects. We eventually stopped everything and started Beline - they saved his life!
He is now active again and beginning to enjoy life after only 4 months of Beline. Please do not stop these. Prescribed drugs which have been 'tested and passed' had very bad effects Beline effects are only positive.

Hi, my mother took Beline for 6 months and had great results. But after seeing the Danish warning she stopped, and now 4 days later is experiencing severe withdrawal effects. Bad headaches, low energy, swollen ankles, and her pain returning. I'm trying to get her to see her doctor now.

tis is the latest email I received from Beline capsules.

Beline Capsules no longer available within the UK from 1st September 2011

We are writing to advise you that unfortunately the MHRA has taken the view that Beline Capsules are not a food supplement and therefore must be licenced by the MHRA - at a substantial fee - for them to continue to be available to you in the UK.

We are continuing discussions with the MHRA to understand this position as all of the ingredients have been, and continue to be, traditionally consumed as herbal foods and/or food supplements for decades around the world.

However, if the final determination is that the product requires licencing in the UK, then you will no longer be able to buy Beline Capsules from within the UK from 1st September 2011.

As we believe fully in Beline Capsules we are commencing the process of licencing the product, which can take up to 9 months, and hope to make it available again in the UK at that point.

Just to give you an update on my mother's withdrawals..

She went to the doctor and had blood tests. The tests were ok, but the doctor said she was having withdrawals from the steroids contained in Beline and has prescribed her a low dose steroid so that she can taper off gradually.

The doctor said the steroid dose she was taking (2 tablets per day) was more than double what would be prescribed for a severe case of arthritis.

He also said she was having withdrawals from the caffeine the tablets contain and told her to drink coffee and taper off gradually.

And finally he warned her that having "felt like a girl" for the last 9 months she would now begin to "feel like an old woman" again (she's only 64).

So Beline appears to me a case of "What goes up must come down". If you are going to stop taking these please consult with your doctor.

Frank

Frank, how has the doctor come to the conclusion that the steroid dose was twice that for a severe case of arthritis? The results posted by the danes only show a low dose of steroids. I'm trying to come off beline myself and struggling, hence my question. Thanks

Hi Jay

That was what the doctor in Ireland said to her.

Anyway she is now abroad and a few days ago was still feeling bad so she went to a doctor where she is. This doctor said she needs 4 tablets of the low dose steroid a day instead of the 2 that the first doctor prescribed.

Now, a few days later and on the higher dose, she is feeling ok again.

The doctor also said withdrawals are going to be different for each person.

If you haven't yet seen a doctor Jay, I guess that's your best option.

Frank

Thanks Frank, I went down to one capsule. That seemed to be ok, then after a few days took one every other day. Suddenly I started feeling very weak and nauseous and my arthritis got so bad I could hardly move so I'm back up to 2 tablets a day again and things have settled. Spoke to my doctor before and he just gave me some diclofenic which didn't really help, will pay a return visit as I may need some low dose steroids to stop as you suggest. Hope your mother gets better

Hi Jay,

I asked my mother, and the 2nd doctor (in Norway) said to take 4 x 5mg of the steroid but that was too much for her and she couldn't sleep, so she is taking it 3 times a day.

The doctor also said that the anti-inflammatory contained in Beline is dangerous and was banned in Norway.

I am a Chinese Physician from Hong Kong. I recently came across this thread and would also like to comment in it. I myself have been taking Beline for more than 10 years and I do not suffer from any of the side effects as claimed. It seems that many people do not understand how Chinese Herbs works.

There are naturally occurring reactions that herbs produce while they interact during the mixing process. These reactions in the mixed herbs are responsible for the healing process after one consumes the Chinese herbs. Similarly, when herbs are paired correctly they are able to cancel out the unwanted/negative properties within each herb while retaining the healing properties to help treat patients.

I cannot comment if Beline contains the Danish claimed ingredients, but there are a few points that provoked some thoughts.

1) If Betamethasone - steroid is found in Beline, can steroid alone produce the same effective results as Beline?

2) Oxetacaine, Betamethasone, Piroxicam, Chlorphenamine. Is it possible to concoct the same efficacy as Beline by just mixing the above 4 ingredients?

3) Is there any medicine/drug in the market that is able to produce the same effect as Beline?

I hope the above generates some thoughts about Chinese medicine that works in a different way compared to Western medicine.

Here's an interesting article, the Chinese has been using arsenic for thousands of years as Traditional Chinese Medicine. Now, it has been proven to cure blood cancer.
reuters.com/article/2010/04/09/us-arsenic-blood-idUSTRE6383HG20100409

"Unlike chemotherapy, the side effects of arsenic (in treating acute promyelocytic leukemia) are very low. There is no hair loss or suppression of bone marrow (function)."

The post from Wong was very interesting. Can you confirm your credentials. How would you explain the side effects people are suffering, like withdrawal symptons, leg cramps.

Maybe you could do some research on the contents yourself as you are qualified?

We continue to take Beline, for me there are no side effects, and although I have cut down the capsules to one in three days I still feel great benefit from this.
My only concern is that my husband does require a stronger dose to deal with his inflammatory arthritis but sadly seems to suffer from acid reflux as a side effect from the Beline.
Has anyone else had this problem, and if so how have you dealt with it?
We still believe in Beline and hope to continue with the capsules.

I've now finally seen a doctor and managed to come off beline, he's prescribed me indomethacin 75 mg at night and 10mg of prednisilone in the morning. That seems to have worked. My mind was made to come off after contacting the danish agency direct. They sent me lots of details of their testing and results, the three different packs tested along with expiry dates and where they obtained them from. I would suggest if people themselves are unsure then they should also contact the danish agency, the contact emails and telephone numbers are on their website next to the warning

I also today came across this new press release from the MHRA

I would just like to add that I have been taking Beline Capsules for 1 year. I am 41 and I suffer with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Although I was warned by my specialist not to take them I have had to go back to Beline to cope with the pain and inflammation. They have miraculousl changed mine and some of my families lives and I can now function and look after my family again. I feel extremely cross that we have had the right to purchase this product in the UK taken away. I have been honest with my local GP and told him that I have had to go back to taking them because of the medication my specialist has given me does not work. He has checked my blood every two weeks for the last six months as I take Methotrexate and has assured me that there is nothing untoward in them. My doctor is pleased that I have found something to help.
