Bgo (Page 2)
UpdatedMedication for cuts and burns
Has anyone been able to uncover the active ingredients in this ?? If you have an old container of it see if the ingredients are listed on it because there is a chance that a pharmacist can compound a custom mixture of it. I would really like to know what the ingredients were myself...
Active ingredients from the box are: Iodoform, Salicylic Acid, Sulphur (precipitated), Zinc Oxide, 1% Phenol (liquified), Calamine, Menthol, Petrolatum, Lanolin and Mineral Oil
Hopefully, this will work for you Roy.
Thank you much Lgw ! I will let everyone know if I have luck finding a similar compound or custom formulation based on the ingredients...
Based on Lgw's last post, here are the properties of the various ingredients found in BGO:
Iodoform - disinfectant, helped relieve itching and irritation
Salicylic Acid - treats dry, rough, scaly, or excess skin caused by certain conditions
Sulphur (precipitated) - traditional method for treating various conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and acne
Zinc Oxide - used to treat minor skin irritations (eg, cuts, burns, and scrapes, poison ivy)
1% Phenol (liquified) - a common precursor to a large collection of drugs (such as Aspirin)
Calamine - used to treat itching and skin irritation caused by chicken pox, insect bites or stings, measles, eczema, sunburn, poison ivy, and other minor skin condition
Menthol - used topically to relieve minor pain
Petrolatum - used as a topical ointment, has lubricating and sun-blocking properties
Lanolin and Mineral Oil - can provide lubrication and ease inflammation. (p.s. did you know that Lanolin "is a greasy yellow substance secreted by the sebaceous glands of wool-bearing animals" (per Wikipedia) ?
With that said, it appears that an equivalent medication today would need to have disinfecting, soothing, moisturizing, pain-relieving, and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s no wonder people are still looking for this salve today!
If anybody has any leads as to where to find an equally effective product then please post here...
I bought the Calmoseptine Ointment as a substitute for the BGO. Well, it has some of the ingredients (Menthol, Zinc Oxide 20.625% and not 1% as in BGO, Calamine, Lanolin, and Phenol). This product isn't an antifungal and Antiseptic product like BGO. It's basically only an Antiseptic and skin protectant/moisture barrier according to the label. Sorry, I thought we had hit the jackpot.
My box of BGO lists one final ingredient that is missing from the June 28th post: 1% Undecylenic Acid which is an antifungal. If you find BGO or an equivalent I would like to know.
Barb, do you have a newer box than mine? I bought mine in 2005. Maybe your ingredient is what I should be looking for if your box is after 2005.
Sorry. I'm not quite sure how old my box and little jar are. I'm thinking it's probably from the 1980's...? My mother bought them for me years ago. I think she got them at a health food store. She always called it miracle cream, and I tend to agree. This is my last one. It's almost gone, and I was really hoping to find some more. I have been searching for a couple of years now and was excited to find this forum last night.
Barb, I think we are out of luck. Roy thought he had found a solution but it's not the same. Hopefully, a pharmacist will see our desperation and make it for us. I will keep you posted.
Do any of you have an empty container I could buy? My grandmother used this on everything when i was growing up. I have not been able to locate the product, but if i could get the container / box it would be appreciated.
Becky, the container won't help because the product isn't being made anymore. See my posts.
i understand that - i want the container as a gag gift for my sister. it is a very long story, but if you have an empty container you don't need i would love to get it from you.
I bought a box of BGO about 8 or 9 yrs ago and I am running out and I bought it from Greenville SC. I am now needing more gecause my children took most of mine and my son wants some to put in his Christmas stocking. HELP ME FIND It.
I asked a compound pharmacist about making BGO. I was advised that I had to have a prescription for it by a pharm tech (GA). Is it really this hard to have an alternative to neosporin? Im so sad. I feel ridiculous calling in a prescription for something to cover scrapes and minor skin irritations etc. Can this be easier?
Desperately looking for BGO!

I loved BGO. The little jars lasted forever. I have an almost empty one that I have had for over 40 years (probably why they went out of business). I, too, have found Calmoseptine to be almost the same. Doesn't smell quite as good, but works well.
How do you get calmoseptine? Is this a pharmacy obtainable thing??
