Are Benzodiazepines Safe

Post barbiturates, benzodiazepines took their place for the efficacious usage as the chief anxiolytic agent. Xanax in particular is both very effective yet moderately addictive. Others less so. I have no problem refrainin from them. Most say they are very addictive. YOUR THOUGHTS.

They are no more safe or dangerous than any other medication, if used properly under doctor's supervision. All medications carry possible risks.

However, benzodiazepines are known to be more habit forming and addictive than many others, plus if someone stops them cold turkey, after being on them for a long period of time, there is a risk of their experiencing seizures due to withdrawals.

Typical side effects to them may include nausea, dizziness, headache and irritability.

I didn't have a good experience with Xanax, when I tried it, it actually tended to make my symptoms much worse, I did much better with Ativan in a very low dose.

Would anyone else like to chime in with experiences?

No Verwon's answer is not definitive. Benzodiazepines are not safe as they can cause dependence, and withdrawal can cause serious problems as well. To assume that they are safe is a dangerous assumption

My experience is being rx'd the .25 mgs along with amiptriptyline for depression. I started this benzo xanax almost 14 years ago after having my last baby and overwhelmed with stress. Over the years I experienced traumatic events and was diagnosed with PTSD causing sudden onset panic attacks and nightmares. Long story short it is a very addictive medication and should be used carefully. I am responsible ultimately for my own health and advocating for myself. I am now taking 1 mg 3 times a day. I was rx d 4 times a day , but I am now on 3 a day. I wish to continue to go down on my dosage. I'm disabled so when I first started this med I was still employed. 6 years after having post partum depression I got hit by a car while riding a bike. My lower back is narrowing, degenerating etc...I am also rx d pain meds, there are times of the month I can't get my meds filled. I have to wait for the pharmacy to kindly order my pain meds and I've been through horrible withdrawal symptoms before, but nothing is as downright frightening to me as going through without my anti anxiety meds. I strongly advise going to a psychiatrist not a Gp for this medications. I apologize for my thoughts lil always are scrambled. I'm just speculating my experience with benzos, specifically xanax and clonazepam... They can really help when one has true anxiety. My receptors in my brain are used to this drug. I'd say right now on physically dependent on it.

I did choose to get off of it in 2009 to 2011 and my Dr. Had me go to impatient hospital care as I came off of this med. It was hell but I stayed off of it for 2 years by my choice I used bio feedback and underwent session with mu psychotherapist. I healed a lot during this time. I know I can get off of it but only under close care of a physician. With my health diagnosis continuing to grow I chose to go back on xanax on 2011 -2012. I do not run out of my scrips early. I do not get relief from the full blown attacks like I did the first 5-8 years. This I when my psychiatrist and I decided to every 6 months to switch from clonazepam to xanax and back to xanax.
